144 - Daggat: House of Deadwood
"Where did you find this?" Daggat asked. He held up the arm suspiciously.
"It was on a turtle," Anath answered. "But… I had to cut it off."
She had left the bone completely intact.
"It has scales," Daggat said.
Zuss crossed her arms. "You should have been more specific."
The arm was the right size and shape. But it had small scales, rather than skin, and webbed fingers.
Daggat shrugged, "Well, this should work. Now… how did you get your dexterity so high?"
Zuss's ears tilted, "It was already twenty-three. When I upgraded improved body control, it gave me a point for every two from my genesis, growth points, and the mark. Brought it to 30."
"I thought it was odd your improved body control didn't increase your dexterity. Must have been set up differently."
Zuss shrugged, "Well, I got it. So, it's whatever. But… it gave me a few options. I thought you guys would like to see how it worked before I picked something."
The entire party, except for Elyndris, was present. They each stepped into the status void.
Floating in front of Zuss, pushed to the side, was a notification.

The Assistant floated over, "Light Step reduces the user's weight applied to their steps."
Zuss nodded, "I can walk quieter, climb on more delicate objects, and eventually run across water, I think."
"Graceful Speed," the Assistant continued, "Dexterity is more impactful when used to calculate speed, but strength becomes less impactful."
"Wait," Klaw said, "That means if I get more dexterity, I will be faster?"
"Seems like it," Daggat said.
Klaw scowled, "Humph. Still don't wanna."
"Finally, Accuracy Guide. It creates a guide for aiming projectiles, increasing accuracy."
"Sort of like my climbing guides," Zuss said.
Daggat scanned the options, "Interesting. So, three pretty good options. I wonder what Klaw or I will get! Which will you choose?"
"The guide is out. I can improve accuracy with practice. I'm already light, even though I am bigger than before, and I am also very fast in the shadows. I could be even faster."
Anath's spider legs adjusted, "She was already fast when we killed the Kappa. She flew from tree to tree! Dashed through branches like they weren't even there."
"You can probably buy one you don't choose. So, what suits you best now?" Daggat said.
Zuss's ears wiggled in thought. "I think speed. With my new wings, I don't have to rely as much on climbing. I can't fly with them, but they slow my descent." She made the purchase. "It's a skill. Will be a while before I can upgrade it."
"Congratulations on thirty dexterity!" Hunter said. He was holding the ogre stone, since at the moment it couldn't fit in the inventory. "So, is it time to leave now?"
"Yup!" Daggat said, "Onwards to new adventures. After we make a quick stop back home."
"How long? I want to DO something." Klaw said.
"Well, let's say two days. One to get a few things done, the other to deal with the orcs that are making camp outside our manor."
"The WHAT?" Anath yelled.
"Orcs. Don't worry, I'll handle it. Al and I want to try to recruit them."
"The same orcs who attacked the village?" Klaw said with a flat expression.
"No. They RAN from the village. I want to know why."
Zuss shook her feathers, then started walking towards the forest. "Let's get going. We've fought orcs before."
A few minutes later, Daggat summoned Hrodebert. They would have to travel in two batches. Hunter was carrying Elyndris in a crate that he had atop his stone.
"Where are we going?" The druid asked.
"Do you know Titanfall Manor?"
"No."
"Uh… big manor where the Demon of Deadwood nested."
"Oh. Yes." He growled softly, "I don't like that place."
"It's my house now! Take us there, I'll give you a tour."
"Okay, but… it is an evil place. Not for people."
Daggat, Klaw, and Zuss went first. Once through, Zuss dashed ahead to scout.
She gave the go-ahead; the orcs must have been further away. That was good; he didn't want to introduce himself as a goblin.
A minute hike later, and there it was. Titanfell Manor.
It was large and dark. The essence it gave off was wrong. Twisted and foul. It was slightly out of sync with itself. Ghostly wisps of… something clung to the place. Feeling, seeking, and watching. One tendril opened the gate for them as they approached.
Physically, the manor looked fantastic. The yard was clear and clean, all the roots were removed, and the leftover debris had been removed.
Klaw and Zuss practically ran inside, but Daggat waited for the others. Anath, Hunter, and Hrodebert came as a group.
"See! There it is!" Anath said, pointing. Ivory had joined them and Anath offered to give her the tour.
Hrodebert bared his teeth, "It is foul. Evil. This place should be burned."
"Yeah, it is evil, isn't it?" Daggat said fondly, "I think that might be our buddy, Al. But, don't dismiss the place right away."
"It is built from the corpse of a Titan. Dead wood should rot, to feed the land. Or burn to renew it. A tree should not remain."
"Oh, stop being so dramatic. It's just a house." Daggat said.
He noticed the quest altar had a quest notification. That would be something he'd snag on their way out. Maybe it was something they could do quickly.
Together, they entered through the main door. Hunter was outside with Anath, talking about something. There, the tree that was the alchemist rose from the floor. It burst through the ceiling and continued to grow upwards. It was very similar to the Titans, though this one was from alchemical experiments.
Hrodebert looked upon it with disgust. In a rage, he took several steps forward and then sank both his fists into the tree.
"Whoa! Hrodbert, what are you doing?" Daggat yelled.
The tree pulsed, and from below, someone screamed. The tree continued to waver as though it were made of sap. This tree had an aura, and it seemed to be screaming.
Daggat took several steps back, not sure what was happening. Maybe introducing this tree to Hrodebert was a bad idea.
The druid began to yell, then ripped something from the tree. It was like the top half of a skeleton. No limbs, just a head and a short spine with a root-like cluster of bone. Its face was familiar. The alchemist.
Daggat tugged at his ear, "Holy shit! I needed him!"
The remnant of the alchemist tried to gasp, shuddered, then died.
Then, essence bloomed from Hrodebert. The green forest essence seemed to grow from him. It reached towards him from outside.
Like serpents snatching prey, the dark, corrupted mana grasped and dominated the forest essence.
Suddenly, the room darkened.
"WHO DARES?! This is my domain." The voice of a young child, chilled by death and dulled by decades of torture, boomed through the room.
The spirit of Alfred drifted into the room. More human now, but far more frightening.
"Al! This is Hrodebert. Let him work." Daggat said.
"Untethered," Hrodebert growled, but his arms were firmly held by the tree.
Alfred looked down to see the remains of his once father. He showed no emotion, but the room returned to its previous state.
"Very well." He said. "Warn me next time you meddle with my magic."
Forest essence streamed through Hrodebert and into the tree. It seemed to brighten and swell. The building groaned in protest as the tree grew just a few inches. From below, the clattering of stone echoed through the gaps in the tree.
Finally, Hrodebert removed his hands. He was panting with effort.
Daggat rounded on him, "What the hell was that?!"
"An abomination." He said, "I cleansed the corruption and gave this lost child back to the Titans."
"That… does that mean you can travel to this tree?"
He smiled, "Yes."
Daggat grinned at him, "All is forgiven then, I didn't like that tree anyway." Daggat faced Alfred, "Oh, sorry about your… uh."
"Don't worry about it. He stopped being my father long ago." Alfred said. He hovered in the air. Daggat could see Alfred more clearly now. Could see what he was. His aura was shredded, held together by fragile roots. Strings seemed to tie the aura to his form. It was loose, drifting like a spider web in the wind.
That was what it meant to be untethered. For your soul to be untethered from the body and then forced back.
The roots were a dull gray that reminded Daggat of a lifeless forest essence. Deadwood essence held him together, keeping his soul from shattering and drifting.
"Neat," Daggat said to no one in particular. "Al, this is Hrodebert. Bob, this is Alfred. I trust you won't have any issues."
"I've seen enough," Hrodebert grumbled. "I won't curse you for sleeping in a Titan corpse, nor for befriending that which should be dead. But I cannot be here. Call me if I am needed."
Then he stepped through the tree.
"What was that?" Alfred asked.
"A demon… or almost one. I think he's still got one more step. But I don't know what it is." Daggat shook his head, "Anyway. Got the table down there?"
"Yes."
"Also, do you know where I put that sharp metal bit? I think I misplaced it."
"I left it in the treasury."
"Great, great. I'm heading down."
Anath rushed into the room, blades drawn, "What happened?"
"Oh, Bob killed our tree, then made it so we can travel directly from the manor. Fast travel, compared to us hiking to the nearest tree at least. Everything's alright."
Anath was staring at the remnant, "If you say so…"
"I wish to speak with you later, Daggat. Plan for the future of Titanfell." Alfred said.
"Sure, sure. Got some things to take care of really quick. Won't take long."
Then he went into the secret tunnels and down into his dungeon. Soon, he found himself standing in front of the treasury. The door was shut.
He forgot to get a key. Where was it? Actually, did it even have a key? Then the door opened by itself.
"Ah, thanks, Al."
Once in, he marveled at his treasure. Several thousand gold worth. Lying on an empty shelf were the shattered remains of his supernaturally sharp sword. That would come in handy shortly.
But first, preparations. He withdrew the tag that opened the window to Moonlight Mercantile.
Daggat had to move a shelf out of the way to make enough space on a wall, then slapped the paper onto it. With a firm tug, he opened the window.
This time, there was more activity in the store. People wandering about and comparing prices. Several half-folk were helping with customers. After just a moment, an elderly male Half-folk stepped up to the screen.
"Thank you for using Moonlight- Oh." His eyes snapped open when he noticed he was dealing with a goblin. Then they got even larger when he noticed the treasure. He coughed, "Moonlight Mercantile. How may I be of assistance?"
Over the next hour, Daggat emptied the shops' potion supplies. Six skill potions, three growth potions, and a biotrait potion. He purchased a new spell construct, Form, for Elyndris. Another bestiary, this one focused on creatures of the sea, was purchased along with a book titled The Common Land Guide, which was a system guide for some basic stuff. Farming and homesteading. Then he bought a booklet of tags, so he could return easily when he wanted to shop more.
All in all, just shy of three thousand gold.
Most of this was for Elyndris, so she would forgive him for not consulting her.
Next, he drank a skill potion.
With the point, he purchased an upgrade to System Assistant.
"You ready for some company?" Daggat asked before he confirmed.
"Oh, yes, Master. I have been waiting for a while."
He confirmed the selection. Multiplied.
Fading into the status void were two system creatures similar to the Assistant. One had a large smile, which seemed to curve into itself. The other had a jittery form, and it moved back and forth nervously.
"Hello, new Assistants," Daggat said.
"Daggat," the grinning assistant said.
"Master… How can I help?" The other whispered.
