141 - Daggat: Reaping their Rewards



Daggat was exhausted. His wound ached, and he had a slight headache. Yet, here was a Spirit Beast. Once defeated, he could finally, finally get his arm back. And evolve. That too.

Question was… how should he challenge it? Daggat wasn't particularly keen on fighting. He had been walking all day.

The arena was a pumpkin patch full of large, knobby gourds. That was interesting, given that it was spring. It must have been a spirit beast thing. Maybe that's why the villagers hadn't harvested it yet.

"So, beasty, I was once offered a trial by riddle. That a thing?" Daggat asked.

The spirit beast was vaguely humanoid. Like a nine-foot-tall skeleton garbed in rags and a wide-brimmed hat.

It leaned down to look at Daggat closer. Its eye sockets glowed with a pale light. "It is. Do you choose trial by riddle?"

"Hold on, don't be hasty. What does that mean?"

"I will challenge your wits. If you fail, you will die."

"Bit harsh." Daggat rubbed at his shoulder, "Say, do you mind if I ask a question? Been bugging me."

"Ask. But, I am limited in what I am allowed to answer."

"What's with the whole invisibility shtick? It's not an issue for us, but I can't see it being fair for the run-of-the-mill monster."

"I am visible in the Status Void. To filter the beasts from the worthy, we challenge your adaptability."

"That means only monsters in the know can challenge you fairly. About the system, I mean."

"Not necessarily. Those who can sense us… and are ruthless enough to attack tend to succeed."

"Huh. Alright, if you say so. Well, let's get this over with. Trail by riddle. Let's do it."

"Very well."

The world darkened. All but the pumpkin patch faded away. A thick, orange essence filled the area, and it was disturbed by wisps of black death descending from above. The death essence flowed into the pumpkins.

This was the preparation for the trial, Daggat knew. Which meant that any extra bit of information he could squeeze out of this process, the better off he would be. He scanned the field as the pumpkins filled with death. All but one. To the naked eye, nothing had changed.

"You must taste the flesh of a pumpkin. Any pumpkin will do. You may ask me three questions. I will answer either yes, no, or I do not know, but I will answer truthfully, no matter the question. Begin."

This wasn't much of a riddle. Daggat was somewhat disappointed. Well, here was at least an opportunity to learn.

"If I evolve, my new body is healed, correct?"

The Spirit Beast tilted its head, "Yes."

"Does the system heal the body based on its current state?"

"Y-Yes. You know, these questions are supposed to help you solve the riddle."

"Sure, sure. If the system encounters something unexpected, such as an extra organ, will it remove the disruption?"

"Ye- Uh, I don't know."

Daggat tsked, "Well, guess we will find out."

He summoned his spear and sent it to cut the clean pumpkin stem, then he brought the pumpkin to him. Grabbing a dagger from the inventory, he cut into the gourd, then bit into the flesh.

Well, it wasn't as much intelligence as he would have liked. But it was something. There was an odd sensation, as though he had been unbalanced. He could feel the cold earth through a new source of touch. It was… a tail?

Daggat turned around to get a look at it, but the tail kept moving out of the way. With some experimentation, he found he could move it. It was long and somewhat thin. Covered in green skin. At the end was a single, curved spike. Sharpened, more like a blade, it reminded Daggat of a scythe.

The Spirit Beast did not look pleased, and the world came back into view.

"THAT SUCKED!" Elyndris yelled. "You didn't even fight it! BAH! I'm going to go build my next form." Then she ran off, grumbling.

Klaw nodded at Daggat as he joined him, "That looked easy."

"Not as easy as yours is going to be," Daggat said. "Now, let's get back. I'm tired."

"Is that a tail?"

"A reaping tail. Whatever that means. I'll figure it out later."

The long hike back was grueling. It was well past midnight by the time he returned to the village. He said nothing to the human guards, who knew him and let him pass. The others were already asleep. He crawled into bed and then spent the next hour trying to find a position comfortable with his new tail.

"Get up." Someone said, waking him. Daggat just grumbled.

"I will stab you. Get up." It was Zuss. Daggat opened an eye.

"What?" He asked.

"Do the thing. Quickly."

"What thing?"

"The alchemy thing. I want to evolve! I couldn't sleep… I kept looking at my options over and over."

Daggat sat up and wiped the sleep from his eyes, "I can't do it here. We've got to get back to the mansion first."

Her eyes seemed to glow with fury, "I won't wait, Daggat. What experiment? I'll do it myself."

It was too early for this. "Fine, I'll explain. Get everyone together. I need to piss first."

Daggat found the party gathered around a large fire, which Hunter had placed an iron disk atop. He was mixing something in a bowl.

"Morning…" Daggat grumbled.

"A tail!" Anath screeched with a wide smile. "You got a tail?!"

"Kind of thought if anyone were to get a tail, it would be Zuss," Klaw said.

"Whatchya making, Hunter?" Daggat asked.

"Stone cakes! It's my favorite. I thought this morning would need a special meal. To celebrate the evolutions!"

"Well, we aren't going through regenisis juuuust yet," Daggat said.

"You aren't. I'm evolving today." Zuss said. "Now, what's that scheme of yours?"

Daggat sighed, "Look, it's simple. I wanted to see what would happen if you evolve while under the effects of a potion." Daggat said. Though for Daggat's evolution, he had a bit more planned.

"That's it? I could have done that yesterday!" Zuss summoned daggers and juggled them idly.

"Well, I want to do some… other stuff." Daggat said, "Issue is, the potions… I don't think they are part of the system. Not really. We get a lot of cool stuff, like scales and fur and things, that aren't reflected in the stats. I think it just compensates."

"So?" Klaw asked.

"So, we don't know what will happen! Maybe nothing. Or maybe it messes everything up! Maybe the angels notice and curse us like Elyndris. Anything could happen."

Hunter poured a thin batter on the stone, and it began to sizzle and bubble.

"I'll take the risk if it shuts you up about waiting," Zuss said.

"What are you going to evolve into?!" Anath asked.

"I… don't know. I have a few options."

Daggat gave up. He clapped, "Let's take a look! To the Status Void!"

Everyone except Hunter went in. He could listen in. He flipped the cake with a fork. It did smell good.

Spider skittered around the group, then into the fire. It was unharmed.

"So, what are you interested in. Floor's yours, Zuss." Daggat said.

Her eyes went a bit wide, "Um…"

"What were you interested in?" Anath asked.

Zuss cleared her throat, then brought up her options. "I have a few interesting ones. There is Berglin and Shihou. I don't know those. Also, I can go sideways. Goblin or bugbear. Gremlin is an option, too. And troll... No to that."

The assistant brought up its notes from the bestiary, "Berglins. Tier three monsters found mostly in goblinoid societies within urban environments. Shihou are tier two… but nothing much is written about them other than they are rare."

"Then, there are a few shadow monsters. Darkbold, Shade Marcher, and a lot of shadow animal things."

The assistant was flipping from page to page, "A kobold variant… and a being without proper physical form. Fascinating."

Zuss grimaced, "Yeah. No. I have some that I think come from the mark. Moon moth, Night Gazer, and lesser glaukix."

The Assistant continued his explanations, "Moon Moths are just big moths. Night Gazers are… not in the beastiary. Neither is lesser glaukix."

"Wait! I know glaukix!" Anath said.

"What?" Daggat asked, "How do you know, and I don't?"

She stuck her tongue out at Daggat, "'Cause I'm older. It was one of my storybooks. The Twin Birds."

"I don't want to lose my goblinoid shape," Zuss said. "Wings would be nice, though."

"Ah!" Daggat said, "You might not have to. See, I noticed something in the bestiary. With some monsters, mostly tier three, it describes the monsters in different ways. Sometimes bipedal, sometimes quadruped, and sometimes winged. All three sometimes."

"That got us looking into it," the Assistant said, "Turns out your genbloom determines your general body shape."

"Food!" Hunter said. He had a plate full of flat, bread-like cakes. He began handing them out.

Klaw snagged a cake and shoved it in his mouth, "Hey! Pretty good!" He said after a few bites. "So… the genbloom thing. What?"

Daggat took his own cake. It was warm and soft, slightly sweet. He wasn't the biggest fan of sweets, but he gave Hunter an appreciative nod.

The assistant answered for him, "Your first form is the genseed. The most basic form. For you, it's gremlin. Your next evolution is called the genbloom. From there, all further evolutions are called Genbranches. It is the genbloom that determines your general form throughout your life. For you, Klaw, no matter what you become, you will always have aspects of this form."

"Specifically," Daggat said after swallowing, "More personal traits. Like your tiny eyes or ugly nose."

"What does that mean for me?" Zuss asked.

Spider crawled over to her, "You will still be hobgobliny, yes, yes. Even if you pick a bird."

"The story is fun," Anath said after eating her own stone cake, "It's about two birds who were raised together. But they became opposites. One liked the moon and the other the sun. One liked fire, the other liked the cold."

The Assistant was reading the lore entry for the creatures, "Indeed. In its lore, it was originally an owl raised by a witch. It outgrew the witch and eventually became known as the bird of death."

"Death? Hmm…" Zuss said.

"The other bird was the phoenix. The book said they loved and hated each other. Stuck in an eternal dance. They grew so powerful, they became the sun and moon."

"The phoenix and the Glaukix…" Hunter mused, "I remember that story. Except, we say the Glaukix went to live on the moon, while the Phoenix died and was reborn as the sun."

"Aren't cultural differences fascinating?" said the Assistant. "It could be an interesting choice. But don't discount the others. I had just read the lore of Shihou. A monkey who challenged the angels."

"I… don't want to be a shadow thing. I like using shadows, but I won't be tied to them." Zuss mused, working through her decisions. "Berglin sounds like the logical next step. But… It's not interesting enough. I do like the idea of the bird of death!"

"What about the monkey?" Daggat asked.

"I don't know what a monkey is. I know what an owl is."

"Seems you've got it figured out," Klaw said.

Anath cheered, "Glaukix!"

"Great. That's settled," Daggat said, "You really willing to try the potion thing?"

Zuss sighed, "Sure. Which one?"

"Which one do you want? It might impart some trait to your new form. Or do nothing."

"Maybe… Night Stalker. The warg one."

Daggat grabbed one from the inventory and floated it over.

"Well. Here goes." Zuss said.

Anath practically quivered in excitement, and Daggat leaned in to watch carefully.

As she drank the potion, he noted that her aura shimmered and mixed with the essence of the potion. Bonding to it crudely. Interesting… was there a way to make the bond stronger?

Hair grew all over her body. She allowed her mask to fall away as her face became wolf-like.

Then she made the choice to evolve.

White light bloomed from her. In the silhouette, her form shifted. She grew taller, gaining a full head of height on Daggat.

When the light faded away, what stood before them was nothing like the Zuss they were familiar with. She had the same general shape. But had owl-like features. A beak and large eyes, which nested her lure nicely. Her arms were just as long, but wider. Thick feathers grew down her arms, forming a half-wing, half-arm. Her hands and feet had both been replaced with talons that looked just as flexible.

Instead of feathers, she had soft hair over her entire body. It was silver and black, marked in a pattern similar to her burn scars, centered on her face and radiating out along her body. Her ears were still goblinoid, but fuzzy.

Zuss seemed overwhelmed by the notifications. Daggat laughed, which was mirrored by the Assistant's mad cackle. Anath squealed.

Zuss opened her beak, "How- oh… that's weird. Bah, bah, ahh…" She worked the beak awkwardly, "How do I look?"
