Chapter 55: Chapter 55: Skill Upgrade, I Remember You
Outside the main body of the trial tower, in Xiajing City, Meng Anwen, the master of the trial tower, was working hard to restore the rules of the battle space. Several people were standing by, their faces etched with worry. The longer the battle dragged on, the more dangerous it would be for the candidates inside the space.
Suddenly, Meng Anwen let out a soft gasp. Bai Yiyuan, standing nearby, noticed it and immediately asked in a deep voice, "What's wrong?"
Meng Anwen's brow furrowed. "The interference from the power of the abyss has greatly weakened."
Bai Yiyuan's expression turned grim. "Could it be that all the candidates inside are dead?"
Meng Anwen closed his eyes and focused. After a moment, he said, "No, I can still sense the breath of many lives inside—it's the breath of our human race."
He paused, his voice quiet but filled with awe. "The abyssal demon's consciousness has weakened significantly and seems to be injured."
The abyssal demon consciousness had entered the battle space, using the dark power of the abyss to disrupt the space's rules, essentially locking down the battlefield. The space was blocked, making it almost impossible for the candidates to escape or fight back. Meng Anwen and Bai Yiyuan exchanged an uneasy glance. Who could possibly harm the demon's consciousness? Certainly not the candidates, most of whom had only 15 or 16 grade abilities.
Bai Yiyuan scoffed in disbelief. "How could they have possibly inflicted harm on the abyssal consciousness?"
In his mind, the battle space was vast and complex. If the candidates managed to use it wisely, they might survive for an hour before help arrived. But the idea of one of them being capable of actually killing the demon's consciousness was absurd. Even if it were merely a fragment of the demon's power, it was still an impossible task.
Meanwhile, within the battle space, a horde of Ferlin orcs, their minds twisted by the abyss's power, abandoned their original targets and charged at Marsh. The shadow of the blood moon howled in fury.
"I'm going to kill you!" it roared. "I'll feast on your flesh and drink your blood!" The shadow had locked onto Marsh as its primary target, forsaking its mission in favor of pure bloodlust. It was consumed by rage, losing all semblance of rationality.
A swarm of Ferlin orcs, also infected by the abyss's power, surged toward Marsh. The skeletal warriors Marsh controlled formed a defensive line to block the oncoming assault.
The skeletal warriors were formidable, with attributes as high as 5000 in four-dimensional stats, far surpassing the same-level monsters. Even with the enhancement from the abyss's power, the Ferlin orcs could not match the sheer strength of the skeletons.
Marsh commanded his skeleton warriors with precision, ordering them to focus on taking down the orcs one by one. Within mere moments, more than a dozen Ferlin orcs were slain.
Boom!
The sound of another explosion echoed through the battlefield. Marsh had activated his signature skill—Corpse Explosion—a magical technique that detonated the bodies of fallen enemies, causing massive damage to nearby foes.
As the corpses of the fallen exploded, Marsh suddenly noticed something unusual. His skill had upgraded.
[Corpse Explosion (Level 2)]: Detonate the corpse, dealing damage equal to 15% of the corpse's HP to enemies within 2 meters.
Marsh had originally acquired the skill with a 1-meter range and 10% damage, but now the range had increased to 2 meters, and the damage had risen to 15%. It seemed like a small change, but combined with his comprehensive enhancement talent, it had a massive impact.
Now, within a 40-meter radius, the damage dealt was 300% of the corpse's health. Marsh realized the significance of this upgrade. "Repeatedly using skills and gaining proficiency with them can level them up," he mused. "Skills obtained through job changes and scrolls must follow a similar progression."
With the expanded range and increased damage, the Corpse Explosion skill became even more lethal. The Ferlin orcs around Marsh were no longer standing. In fact, there wasn't a single orc left near him.
Even the shadow of the blood moon fell silent.
Marsh's lips curled into a slight smile as his body began to glow faintly, enveloped in a soft white light. He had leveled up. The upgrade had not only enhanced his power but also caught the attention of many others who were watching from outside the battle space.
The candidates had started to realize that Marsh had been using the abyss-infected monsters to level up. Some whispered in awe.
"He's actually using these monsters to gain experience."
"He's strong enough to solo a nightmare-level dungeon."
"This guy is incredible."
"Marsh… which province is he from?"
"Thank goodness he's here. If not, we'd all be dead."
Admiration filled the eyes of those who observed him. Marsh looked up. The blood moon still hung in the sky, and the shadow remained.
"It seems it's not over yet," Marsh muttered under his breath.
With a thought, five Ferlin orc corpses were hurled into the air. The skeleton warriors leaped, carrying Marsh with them, jumping high into the air.
The shadow, realizing it was in trouble, stopped howling. Instead, it gave a cold, eerie laugh.
"Your name is Marsh," the shadow hissed. "The king remembers you."
"When you come to the abyss, the king will make sure to entertain you."
Marsh didn't respond. Instead, he sent the corpses hurtling toward the blood moon.
The corpses exploded violently, and with a final, desperate scream, the shadow was blown away. The blood moon shattered like a fragile mirror, dissipating into the air.
With that, the battle space returned to normal.
Outside the trial tower, Meng Anwen was stunned. "The abyssal consciousness has been completely wiped out. The battle space is stable again."
"The children are safe. No injuries."
Bai Yiyuan's face twisted with disbelief. This outcome had far surpassed anything he had anticipated. For someone of his experience, there were few things that could truly surprise him.
"Can you track what happened inside?" Bai Yiyuan asked, eager for answers.
Meng Anwen nodded. "Yes, I can."
Bai Yiyuan thought for a moment. "There's no need to rush. Send the candidates back first, just to be safe."
"Understood," Meng Anwen responded.
Back in the battle space, the blood moon faded, and the land began to return to normal.
Jeny, still trembling slightly, called out softly, "Marsh, are you alright?"
She had been shaken by the events that had unfolded, her face still pale from the near-death experience. If not for Marsh, she would have been dead by now.
Marsh nodded, offering a reassuring smile. "I'm fine."
Though there were no words of comfort, Jeny felt a deep sense of relief.
All around them, the candidates were still in shock, processing what had just occurred. Just moments ago, they had been fleeing from the Ferlin orcs, unable to fight back. Fortunately, Marsh had been there to protect them.
Bai Shen's voice suddenly rang out.
"Candidates, the power of the abyss has dissipated. The battle space has returned to normal."
"You will be returned to the original examination room, and the results of the test will be announced shortly."
