Chapter 39: Chapter 39

Jeny called Kevin over.

Kevin's eyes darted mischievously, and he broke into a grin full of hidden meaning.

"You two…"

Jeny's expression turned cold. "Shut your mouth, or I'll tear you apart."

Jeny was well-known for her fiery temper. She only softened slightly when she was with Marsh, given that he was naturally aloof. If she acted too arrogant, their conversations wouldn't go anywhere.

Facing Kevin, though, her sharp temper was on full display.

Startled, Kevin scratched the back of his head. "Just joking, just joking! Don't take it seriously."

Jeny gave him a withering glare. "Stop looking for a team. Once Marsh and I finish our cooldown period, we'll take you through the dungeon. Before the big exam, you should be able to hit level 12 without a problem."

Kevin's eyes lit up with excitement. "Really? You two are lifesavers!"

"You don't understand—my dream school only requires level 12. What amazing people!"

His reaction was so exaggerated that Jeny frowned in disdain. "If you keep acting like this, I'll leave you behind."

Kevin immediately straightened up, his tone serious. "Don't worry, Miss Jeny. From now on, I'll follow your lead. If you tell me to go east, I won't go west. If you tell me to go north, I won't head south."

Jeny rolled her eyes. "Stop spouting nonsense and just be quiet." She summoned a small fireball, letting it hover in her palm as a warning.

Kevin wisely shut his mouth. "How long do I have to wait for your cooldown period to end?"

Jeny calculated the time. "Ten hours."

"Ten hours?" Kevin winced, but he knew he had no better option. He'd been struggling to find a team for days. "Fine. You two rest up—I'll go grind wild monsters in the meantime."

Before leaving, Kevin glanced over his shoulder and shouted, "Good luck, Marsh! Don't forget to take Jeny as your… you know, partner!"

Jeny's face turned red with anger, and she hurled the fireball at him. It exploded near Kevin's heels, scattering sparks that singed his clothes.

"Ouch!" Kevin yelped, clutching his backside as he sprinted away.

Jeny huffed, stomping her foot. "That guy! His mouth is too foul. I swear I'll teach him a lesson someday."

Marsh, watching the scene, chuckled softly. He had to admit that while Kevin was infuriating at times, he was genuine. When everyone else avoided Marsh, Kevin was the only one who approached him without hesitation.

Despite Marsh's cold demeanor, Kevin never seemed discouraged. He was, in his own way, a sincere and loyal friend.

---

Ten hours later, the cooldown period ended, and Kevin rejoined Marsh and Jeny's team.

Marsh, as the party leader, initiated the dungeon.

The moment they stepped into the nightmare-level instance, Kevin froze. His face turned pale as he scanned their surroundings.

"Wait… is this nightmare difficulty?"

Jeny crossed her arms, smirking. "Yes. Just stick close and don't cause trouble. You don't even need to fight."

Kevin's eyes widened in terror. "Are you serious? This is nightmare difficulty! I'll die in seconds if I make one wrong move!"

Jeny rolled her eyes. "Then don't make any wrong moves. Just follow me."

Terrified for his life, Kevin clung to Jeny like a shadow, not daring to stray even a step.

Ten minutes later, the dungeon boss collapsed with a deafening roar.

Kevin stared at the lifeless creature, his mouth hanging open. "It's… dead? Already?"

Jeny smirked. "Close your mouth before you start drooling."

Kevin quickly wiped the corners of his lips, then dropped to his knees and grabbed Marsh's leg. "Boss Marsh, you're incredible! Please take me with you every time you run a dungeon. I'll be your loyal pendant!"

Jeny scowled. "Have some dignity! You're a knight, for crying out loud. Show some chivalry."

Kevin grinned. "What's the point of chivalry when I have a boss like Marsh? I'm better off sticking to him."

Jeny sighed in exasperation. She turned her attention to Marsh, who was now enveloped in a soft white glow. He had leveled up to 16.

For Marsh, this marked a significant milestone. Level 16 all but guaranteed his admission to Xiajing Academy.

Jeny, on the other hand, was only one more dungeon run away from reaching level 15—a level high enough to secure her own spot at the prestigious academy.

As for Kevin, his goal was more modest. He aimed to join Jiangning Academy, a reputable provincial school. Reaching level 12 would be more than enough for him to qualify.

---

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the city wall of Xihai City's southern district came into view.

A group of school principals stood atop the wall, gazing out over the wilderness.

"It's about time the students started returning," said Principal David.

"Tomorrow's the big exam," another principal chimed in. "I reminded them to come back today no matter what."

"I wonder how the results will turn out this year," mused a third.

David, the principal of Xihai City's No. 1 High School, remained focused on the horizon. "Most of them will do fine. The question is whether anyone will stand out this year."

One of the other principals chuckled. "David, I heard two of your students are aiming for Xiajing Academy. Do you think they'll make it?"

David nodded. "Marsh and Jeny are both targeting Xiajing Academy. If anyone from Xihai City can pull it off, it's them."

"They'll need to be at least level 15 to have a fighting chance," another principal remarked. "Level 16 would be even better. In recent years, only Morkel and Lin Mohan managed to hit that mark."

David smiled faintly. "I believe in them. Marsh and Jeny are exceptional. If anyone can create a miracle, it's those two."

As they spoke, figures began appearing in the distance.

"Looks like the students are returning," one of the principals observed.

Using a detection spell, they identified the first student to arrive.

[Xu Zhen, Level 12, Sword Fighter.]

The principal of No. 3 High School beamed with pride. "That's one of ours. Level 12 is a solid result."

Moments later, another student approached.

[Wan Ming, Level 13, Eagle-Eyed Archer.]

"Wan Ming from No. 2 High School," another principal noted.

One by one, students trickled back into the city, each proudly displaying their levels. For the principals, this was more than just a roll call—it was a competition of pride and prestige.

David, however, kept his eyes fixed on the horizon, waiting for two specific figures to appear.

---

Marsh, Jeny, and Kevin stood at the edge of the wilderness, gazing at the distant city walls.

"It's time to head back," Jeny said, brushing the dust off her clothes.

Kevin grinned. "I can't believe I hit level 12. Thanks to you two, I actually have a shot at Jiangning Academy."

Marsh remained silent, his thoughts focused on the challenges ahead.

Jeny glanced at him and smiled. "You're thinking about Xiajing Academy, aren't you?"

Marsh nodded. "And beyond that—the Creation Theological Academy."

Jeny's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Let's make it happen. Together."

With that, the trio set off toward the city, their figures bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun.
