Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Discovering the Profession Tower
"Let's go over and take a look," Fang Jie, now emboldened by his talent, had the support of an army of twenty thousand.
A horde of Skeleton Soldiers marched forward, and within minutes, they could see what the towering structure was. It was an ancient tower, looking like a giant construction set of building blocks pieced together.
There was an entrance at the base of the tower; however, the tower's vicinity was far from empty.
On the contrary, as soon as Fang Jie approached, a large group of trees uprooted themselves and walked toward him.
Tree Monster Level 2: Rank (Apprentice)
Tree Spirit Level 2: Rank (Black Iron)
Special labels immediately appeared on this group of trees. Dong Jie counted from behind—there were only two Black Iron ranked Tree Spirits, but there was a frightening number of Tree Monsters, nearly a thousand.
"Charge them, take them down," Fang Jie commanded, and a massive number of Skeleton Soldiers sprinted toward the enemy.
The Tree Monsters and Tree Spirits were taller and even more imposing than Goblin Lords. Their massive branch-like limbs could send a group of Skeleton Soldiers flying with a mere swipe.
"These creatures are probably even tougher than zombies. If my Skeletons weren't so numerous, they wouldn't stand a chance."
Fang Jie muttered while looking toward the tower. At the top of the tower, there seemed to be a phantom disk that was spinning and diminishing at its center.
For some reason, Fang Jie immediately knew that there must be a time limit.
Once the disk disappeared, the tower would likely vanish too. Meaning, the tower's appearance in any location was random; without good fortune, one would never encounter such a structure.
The battle lasted over an hour, mainly due to the sturdiness of the Tree Monsters.
These Tree Monsters moved as slow, if not slower, than zombies. But being made of wood inside and out—particularly hard wood at that—made them huge and difficult to cut down.
Unless their central core was cut through, they had to be smashed into pieces.
After the battle ended, the ground was littered with broken wood and bone fragments.
"Bad luck, we lost more than they did," Fang Jie grumbled. His own Skeleton Soldiers had suffered losses of over three thousand, despite vastly outnumbering the enemy.
This three-to-one casualty rate went to show just how low Skeleton Soldiers ranked in terms of combat power.
No help for it; that's the price for quantity, thought Fang Jie.
"What a pity, the wood from these trees can't be used as corpses. All I got is some Hardwood material."
Parts of the dead Tree Monsters and Tree Spirits could be used, with some of the inner wood from the Tree Monsters having turned into Hardwood. So he had collected quite a bit of Hardwood materials for use.
After returning, he could use it for a Territory Upgrade.
Upgrades to a village were, after all, unlike to entail challenge quests.
"I wonder what this tower is about, let's go inside and look," Fang Jie directed his Skeleton Soldiers towards the entrance. However, he discovered that Skeleton Soldiers were completely unable to enter the tower.
After opening the door, they were blocked by a special force on the outside.
"Troops can't enter; looks like it's up to me to go in alone." Fang Jie proceeded cautiously, peering inside without detecting anything amiss before gingerly stepping through the entrance.
"Welcome to the Profession Tower. Would you like to start the profession selection process now?"
As soon as Fang Jie entered, he was greeted by a notifying voice. It was a voice he had heard several times before, so its familiarity actually put him at ease.
"So this is the Profession Tower," Fang Jie looked up and saw numerous statues.
Warrior, Knight, Elemental Mage, Beast Tamer, assassin, Scout, Shadow Mage…
Statues as far as the eye could see, each representing a different profession. The first few were mainstream, while the latter ones got more niche. These niche professions were often not easy to level up.
"Hold on, if you can switch professions here directly, what's the use of a Profession Transfer Scroll?"
As Fang Jie took out the Profession Transfer Scroll, it suddenly unfurled on its own.
"Profession Tower detected, beginning profession matching. Highest compatibility professions: Undead Mage, Death Knight."
The Profession Scroll presented two professions, and after searching through the statues for a while, Fang Jie found them. These two were mainstream professions—mainstream wasn't necessarily bad, on the contrary, more good choices were available.
Fang Jie reviewed the descriptions of the two and ultimately chose Undead Mage.
Because the Death Knight profession required him to transform into an Undead Creature, and although Fang Jie was of the Undead Camp, he didn't really fancy turning himself into an undead being.
As for the other professions, despite how much he coveted them, he still opted for the one with the highest compatibility.
Higher compatibility likely carried some special benefits.
"Please select a talent direction."
The Profession Transfer Scroll directly offered the most compatible talent directions.
Magic Recovery, White Bone Specialization, Zombie Expertise, Death Power Specialization, Undead Regeneration…
The first five showed incredibly high compatibility. As the list went on, compatibility decreased significantly. Fang Jie experimented and found that without the scroll, he couldn't choose a talent direction.
This meant that after completing the profession selection, his talent would generate automatically.
Such an automated talent could end up being very good, but more likely it would be mediocre or even useless. Even selecting a detrimental talent wasn't out of the question.
Fang Jie finally understood the true value of the scroll he had been awarded.
"Magic Recovery, as the name implies, is for recovering magic power, a critical standard for any Mage. White Bone Specialization and Zombie Expertise are clearly related to those types of summons."
"Death Power Specialization is unclear—whether it's an enhancement of spell power or overall strength of undead."
"And the last one, Undead Regeneration—is it about increasing the undead's own regeneration speed, or is it for direct healing?"
Without clear descriptions, Fang Jie was uncertain. After much thought, he chose the first direction. "This will be it. The highest compatibility and faster magic recovery is a panacea for a Mage."
The other options seemed good as well, appearing to significantly boost one's own strength, but a Mage without magic power is nothing but weak.
