Chapter 72: Farewell, Arlecchino
Afterward, Felina stayed in Mondstadt for another day, discussing the construction of a power plant, weapon purchases, and trade collaborations between Mondstadt and Fontaine with the Knights of Favonius.
Once the discussions were concluded, she attended a banquet hosted by the Knights as a gesture of hospitality. By the time everything wrapped up, it was already evening.
...
At night, in Mondstadt, near a railing in the plaza.
"I wouldn't have wasted so much effort arranging plans in Mondstadt if I had known Miss Furina was involved," said The Knave, Arlecchino, leaning against the railing.
In the game, the one responsible for seizing the Anemo Gnosis in Mondstadt was La Signora. However, La Signora had already been killed by Felina during an incident in the desert.
This time, taking advantage of the chaos caused by the dragon disaster, the Fatui intended to exploit the opportunity to steal the Anemo Gnosis.
But unexpectedly, before their plan could even start, Mondstadt had already resolved both the dragon disaster and the Abyss Order's threats.
Mondstadt's problems were solved so quickly that the Fatui had no chance to act, leaving Arlecchino feeling like she had punched cotton—a frustrating sense of futility.
Felina, standing nearby, couldn't help but smile at Arlecchino's words.
In front of The Knave, she took out two chess pieces—one golden and one green.
"Are those the Anemo Gnosis and the Geo Gnosis?!"
Even someone as composed as Arlecchino couldn't hide her surprise at the sight of Felina holding two Gnoses.
"Indeed," Felina replied with a calm smile. "These are what I obtained through negotiations with the Anemo Archon and the Geo Archon."
"So," she continued, her eyes glinting with an unusual light as she stared at Arlecchino, "I'm standing here, right next to you, with at least two Gnoses on me. Don't you want to try and take them?"
"Miss Furina, you've grown far more commanding and imposing since we last met," Arlecchino remarked.
"Last time, you exuded strength, but there was still a trace of naivety."
"But now, you radiate unshakable power and composure."
"I don't believe I could seize those two Gnoses from you in my current state."
Felina's lips curled into an enigmatic smile. "Is it that you can't take them or that you won't try?"
Arlecchino, of course, understood the meaning behind Felina's words.
"Can't" would imply she wasn't strong enough to defeat Felina.
As for why she "won't"…
The children of the House of Hearth, once under Arlecchino's care, were now living under the protection of Fontaine's court.
Though those children were currently receiving support and care from the Fontaine government, in a way, they also served as hostages.
They were Felina's leverage over Arlecchino.
If Arlecchino were to make a move against Felina, no one could guarantee the fate of those children left behind in Fontaine.
Of course, Arlecchino had already anticipated this.
She knew full well that leaving the children there was tantamount to handing her weakness to Felina.
But to Arlecchino, this was just part of the deal.
She handed her weakness to Felina, and in return, Felina gave the children the opportunity to live freely in Fontaine.
Fair and reasonable.
Arlecchino did not answer Felina's question.
Such mutually understood questions required no answer.
Instead, she spoke, "I didn't expect Miss Furina to also be collecting Gnoses."
"Although I assume you're well aware of what this entails, I still feel compelled to remind you."
"The Tsaritsa and the Fatui are also collecting Gnoses. The two you hold now, along with the Hydro Gnosis that Fontaine already possesses, make three."
"Subtracting the Cryo Gnosis, which the Tsaritsa already has, the Fatui need to collect six more. Fontaine now holds half their remaining goal."
"This will undoubtedly bring greater calamity to Fontaine."
"Three Gnoses—the Fatui will stop at nothing to acquire them, even if it means war."
"Thank you for the warning," Felina replied with a smile. "But should I interpret your warning as a betrayal of the Fatui?"
"It's not betrayal," Arlecchino replied. "I simply don't want the children to suffer from the horrors of war."
"Perhaps," she added, "I'm the one among the Fatui who least wishes for a war between Snezhnaya and Fontaine."
"Is that so?"
Felina chuckled lightly. "I find people like you rather admirable."
With those words, she handed Arlecchino a water-blue box. The surface of the box was covered with intricate seals that prevented anyone from sensing what lay within.
"What is this?" Arlecchino asked, her brow furrowing.
"A gift," Felina said, meeting Arlecchino's gaze.
Her expression remained calm, a faint smile playing on her lips as she spoke softly, "Take it. Carry it with you."
"If one day you find yourself standing in opposition to the Tsaritsa, the contents of this box may save your life."
Arlecchino stood stunned for a long time.
In the end, she accepted the box.
She didn't know what it contained, but a gift from a god was precious beyond measure, no matter its nature.
"In that case, I thank you for your generosity, Miss Furina."
Knowing that the Anemo Gnosis and Geo Gnosis were now in Felina's possession, there was no longer any reason to remain in Mondstadt.
The next day, Arlecchino departed Mondstadt with the Fatui delegation.
She also sent word to Childe, who was in Liyue attempting to seize the Geo Gnosis, advising him to abandon the effort and return to Snezhnaya to report.
...
Fontaine
Felina sat in her office.
"The Cataclysm five hundred years ago—I've read quite a lot about it in the history books. It was truly a terrifying disaster," Furina remarked. "Felina, do you think the calamity foretold to come will be as dreadful as the one from five hundred years ago?"
"I fear it may be even worse," Felina replied. "That's precisely why I must continue amassing strength for Fontaine."
"Only with sufficient power can we save more lives, protect Fontaine, and safeguard all of you."
Felina's expression was resolute as she spoke.
If the goal were merely to fend off an invasion from Snezhnaya, Fontaine's current arsenal and elite forces would already be more than sufficient.
But to face a calamity brought by the Abyss? This alone was far from enough!
Of course, in matters of war, whether something is sufficient depends on the definition set by its leaders.
Sacrificing 100,000 lives to win a war is considered a victory.
Sacrificing 10,000 lives to win a war is also a victory.
Sacrificing 1,000 lives to win a war remains a victory.
With Fontaine's current weaponry and top-tier combatants like Focalors, Neuvillette, Felina, and Osial, could they overcome a Cataclysm and the disasters of the Abyss?
Most likely, yes.
But if the cost of victory was countless casualties, leaving behind a shattered world—what meaning would such a victory hold?
Felina was never naïve. War inherently comes with loss of life. But she still hoped to minimize the casualties and the damage the Abyss could inflict on the world.
Her mission was to resolve the crisis of prophecy, lead Fontaine to triumph over the Abyssal disaster, protect Furina, and leave her with a pure, untainted world.
To achieve this, she needed more power.
The Geo Gnosis and the Anemo Gnosis weren't enough.
...
"The Geo Gnosis and the Anemo Gnosis are already in your hands," Furina said. "So are you planning to go after the Electro Archon's Gnosis next or the Pyro Archon's?"
Having spent so much time together, Furina had come to understand Felina's temperament. She knew Felina couldn't sit still and would definitely pursue the next Gnosis.
However, the Cryo Gnosis was firmly held by the Tsaritsa, and with the current strained relations between Fontaine and Snezhnaya, obtaining it would be challenging.
Therefore, Furina assumed Felina would first target the Gnoses of the Pyro Archon or the Electro Archon.
With Inazuma in isolation under its Sakoku Decree, obtaining the Electro Gnosis would be difficult. Thus, Furina believed Felina would start with the Pyro Gnosis.
To her surprise, Felina replied, "I intend to seize the Electro Gnosis first."
"Huh?" Furina blinked. "But Inazuma is so far away, and it's under the Sakoku Decree. Going after the Electro Gnosis won't be easy!"
"That's true," Felina admitted with a nod. "But Natlan, the Nation of Fire, is the most deeply affected by the Abyss. Right now, I don't have the confidence to handle the Abyss there. It's better to start with Inazuma."
"As for how to acquire the Electro Gnosis…" Felina smiled. "I already have a plan. Don't worry."
...
Inazuma
At the summit of Mt. Yougou, Narukami Shrine.
The name Narukami is another title for the Electro Archon. As such, the Narukami Shrine is dedicated to her worship.
Night had fallen. Beneath the sacred sakura tree of the shrine, a pink-haired woman with fox ears gazed out toward Inazuma City in the distance.
This woman was Yae Miko. She was a familiar of the Electro Archon and the Guuji of the Narukami Shrine, responsible for overseeing its operations.
Yae Miko gazed into the distance at Inazuma City, where her Archon resided. Yet she could no longer see her god.
The reasons behind this were tied to Inazuma's history.
Inazuma's Electro Archon was, in fact, a pair of twin sisters.
The elder sister was named Baal, also known as Raiden Makoto.
The younger sister was Beelzebul, also known as Raiden Ei.
Makoto was frail and lacked martial powers, but she was gentle, wise, and skilled in governance and strategy.
Ei, on the other hand, was deeply passionate about martial arts, possessed immense strength, but was not adept at planning or leadership.
During the Archon War, the elder sister managed the strategies, while the younger sister fought on the battlefield. Together, they won the Archon War.
Makoto became the Electro Archon, governing Inazuma, while Ei became her shadow warrior, responsible for protecting Inazuma.
Since the two sisters never appeared publicly at the same time and looked identical, the people of Inazuma always believed that their Archon was both a masterful leader and a formidable warrior.
However, Inazuma's journey was far from peaceful.
A thousand years ago, the god Orobashi invaded Inazuma's territory. Ei's close friend and trusted general, Kitsune Saiguu, died in the battle against Orobashi.
Five hundred years ago, the Abyssal calamity struck. Ei's dear friend and another trusted general, Chiyo, fought valiantly in the Abyss but was corrupted by its power, losing her sanity. In her madness, Chiyo turned her blade against Ei, who was forced to sever her horns and arm, after which Chiyo vanished.
Also five hundred years ago, to protect Inazuma, Ei's confidant and the previous Guuji of the Narukami Shrine, Kitsune Saiguu, perished during the Abyssal calamity.
And yet again, five hundred years ago, during the Khaenri'ah catastrophe, Celestia summoned the Seven Archons to resist the Abyssal threat.
Makoto, the elder sister, was called to the Khaenri'ah battlefield. When Ei arrived, she found only her gravely wounded sister and the ruins of Khaenri'ah.
In her final moments, Makoto hastily passed her sword, the title of the Electro Archon, and control of Inazuma to Ei before succumbing to her injuries.
Though Ei possessed divine power, she lacked the wisdom and temperament necessary for governance.
Until then, Makoto and their friends had shielded Ei from the scheming, intrigues, and complexities of ruling a nation.
Ei had been allowed to immerse herself solely in martial arts, living as a pure-hearted warrior without distraction.
In some ways, Makoto and their friends had protected Ei too well, leaving her emotionally fragile and naive.
Neither sister had anticipated the suddenness of Makoto's demise.
Under these circumstances, entrusting the governance of a nation to Ei was bound to have dire consequences.
As mentioned before, the longer one lives, the greater the burdens and losses they endure.
The Abyssal calamity had taken away Kitsune Saiguu and Chiyo, Ei's close friends. It had also taken her sister, Makoto, along with countless lives and homes in Inazuma.
These devastating blows plunged Ei into profound grief and caused significant emotional damage, altering her personality dramatically.
She came to believe that for every step a nation takes toward progress, something is inevitably lost.
Her friends, her sister—each sacrificed for the future of Inazuma.
On the battlefield of Khaenri'ah, she witnessed firsthand the destruction of Khaenri'ah, a nation that had advanced relentlessly, only to be obliterated by Celestia.
Humanity, insatiable in its pursuits, constantly seeks new heights of happiness, venturing into uncharted, often forbidden, realms in search of progress.
Ei feared that if Inazuma continued to advance, it too might one day meet Khaenri'ah's fate, drawing the ire of Celestia and inviting destruction.
"So-called happiness is endless. How long must human civilization advance before it is satisfied? I think it will never be satisfied."
"Right now, the people of Inazuma have homes to live in, food to eat—that is enough. There is no need for further progress."
"As long as we do not move forward, nothing will be lost. We won't touch what should not be touched, and thus, we won't invite destruction."
"If we do not move forward, I will lose nothing more, and Inazuma can endure forever. This is eternity!"
Ultimately, this belief was born from the emotional scars that Ei carried.
