Chapter 144: The Real Culprit (Requesting Subscription and Monthly Tickets)_2

Zhao Donglai inquired about the other teams.

They obtained interviews with several of Guo Jing's classmates. Unsurprisingly, the records were filled with testimonies against Guo Jing, while those in his favor were completely absent.

One of the witnesses was the classmate who had informed Luo Fei about Guo Jing's intention to buy a computer.

The record did note Guo Jing's plan to buy a computer, but it lacked other evidence, making this testimony misleading.

Due to financial difficulties, Guo Jing was so desperate to change his situation that he resorted to robbery.

Zhao Donglai was speechless with anger after reading it.

Scum!

He was overwhelmed by the thought that these two were disgraceful to their profession as law enforcement officers!

Instead of upholding the principle of truthfulness, they altered witness testimonies based on subjective judgment just to solve the case.

This was more than a simple breach of discipline; it was a crime.

At that moment, Liao Xingyu and Li Jun walked in.

"Captain Zhao, we're back."

"How's the situation?"

"We spoke with Guo Jing's class teacher, and her account matches Captain Luo's description completely. We have also confirmed her claim about the policeman named Wang arguing against her."

"This incident is real. Based on photo identification, it's certain that the policeman is Wang Tao."

"Additionally, we cross-checked with several other teachers and cafeteria staff from Guo Jing's high school to prevent lying. They confirmed the teacher's statements as true."

Seeing Zhao Donglai's face dark as the bottom of a pot, Liao Xingyu asked, "Captain Zhao, how's it going on your side?"

"We just reviewed several interview records. They're all altered testimonies, completely different from what we currently understand."

Saying this, Zhao Donglai turned to Zhou Fan, "Zhou Fan, immediately head to the detention center with Zhao Hai, bring Guo Jing over, and see if his confession has also been tampered with."

Even though it seemed obvious, without absolute proof, he dared not draw rash conclusions.

Zhou Fan nodded, called Zhao Hai, and left at once.

While they spoke, Luo Fei picked up Zhang Yanhua's record to read it.

As the victim in the case, she had many records—over five pages long.

Judging by the timestamps, her record was divided into two sessions.

One was made the day after the crime, which was February 6th.

The other was a few days after the second crime, likely because the police realized both incidents were committed by the same person and sought further information from her.

In both records, Luo Fei noticed an issue.

In the first record, when recalling suspect features, Zhang Yanhua mentioned that although the suspect wore a hood-like mask throughout, it was noticeable that he had single eyelids, rough skin, and a raspy voice.

However, he had seen Guo Jing, and Guo Jing didn't match these characteristics at all.

Sure enough, upon reviewing the second record, these points were missing.

So, was this also deliberately altered?

"Captain Liao, when you met with Zhang Yanhua, did you ask about the robber's appearance?"

"Yes, according to her, he wore a hood the entire time, but you could hear the raspy voice..."

What Liao Xingyu described matched the first record exactly.

Luo Fei immediately showed an expression of realization and handed the record to Zhao Donglai, "Captain Zhao, Zhang Yanhua's record has been tampered with as well."

Zhao Donglai was left speechless, feeling somewhat helpless, "Let's gather all the details and present it to Director Zheng in the morning."

"Captain Zhao, should we retrieve the original interview records from the archives for cross-checking?"

Because each case is different, the interview evidence will contain some unrelated information.

To improve the efficiency of the prosecutor's review, only the part related to the case is retained after screening and organizing the transcripts.

Yet, for verification, original interview records are sealed separately for each case.

Facing Liao Xingyu's suggestion, Zhao Donglai sighed, "Since they've tampered with the case files, the originals are likely altered too... But for caution's sake, go ahead and request them from the archives for inspection."

"Alright, I'll do it now."

Everyone was whispering among themselves.

"Did we really catch the wrong person?"

"This is bad; Old Wu's case just restored our reputation for a moment, and now this happens. Who knows what others will say about us this time..."

"What's going on with Captain Zhou and the others..."

Amidst the complaints, Luo Fei suddenly had a flash of inspiration.

He shot up from his chair, startling everyone.

"Captain Zhao, we need to go to the detention center immediately!"

"Luo Fei, don't rush. Zhou Fan has already gone to bring Guo Jing; he'll be back shortly."

"No, I'm not going to see Guo Jing; I want to see Old Wu!"

"Old Wu? Why see him? Do you suspect him in this matter?"

As Zhao Donglai spoke, his surprise grew with each word, but Luo Fei shook his head gently, "I don't suspect him, but Captain Zhao, do you remember a detail?"

"Old Wu once said he was mocked over this case, hence his desire to commit a crime to prove himself."

"Of course, I remember... But how is this related?"

"Do you recall him ridiculing the police for taking one and a half years to solve a shooting case during interrogation?"

"It seems he said so... Are you suggesting he knew all along that Guo Jing wasn't the culprit?" Zhao Donglai suddenly realized, exclaiming in disbelief.

"Exactly, I initially thought he was insulting us, but thinking again, he might have been telling the truth."

"Especially as he was confident we'd meet again; he might have been hinting at this!"

"Indeed, you raise a good point! We must hurry over there."

Zhao Donglai quickly stood, taking a couple of steps before turning back to Li Jun, "Li Jun, I'm going out with Luo Fei. When Zhou Fan returns, you and Liao Xingyu interrogate Guo Jing first, and we'll address the rest when we're back."

"Understood."

The two hurried out.

Yongjiang Detention Center.

In the visiting room, when Old Wu was brought in by the guards and saw Luo Fei and Zhao Donglai inside, he wasn't surprised at all.

"Officer Luo, we meet again at last."

"When the guard said someone wanted to see me, I guessed it must be you. After all, I have no other family or friends in this world."

Dragging his shackles, Old Wu sat across from them, starting like an old friend catching up.

But Luo Fei wasn't there for pleasantries, getting straight to the point, "Old Wu, did you know from the start that Guo Jing wasn't the murderer?"

"Officer Luo, you figured it out quickly? Not bad, not bad."

Old Wu clapped lightly in futile admiration, looking approvingly.

Zhao Donglai loathed his attitude, part praise, part sarcasm, making people uncomfortable.

He couldn't help but snap, "Wu Xuewu, just tell us, who is the real killer?"

Old Wu sneered and turned to glance at him, questioning, "Why should I tell you? Isn't it a policeman's job to investigate?"

Zhao Donglai was left speechless.

Luo Fei said calmly, "Old Wu, you dropped clues for us on purpose, didn't you want me to find you?"

"I guessed you despised the police and would gladly reveal the real perpetrator just to embarrass us."

"Haha, Officer Luo, you know me well... Indeed, I planned to tell you the real murderer."

"However, my plan was to reveal it only after Guo Jing was executed, so now... it's not the right time yet."

Luo Fei was a bit startled by his words.

Old Wu and Guo Jing were not in the same unit, but he somehow guessed accurately that Guo Jing hadn't been executed.

This guy certainly had some cunning.
