Gardening Life With Plant Magic: Haku and the Spirits’ Botanical Garden

59: Living with a Housekeeping Fairy

So, I wonder if the housekeeping fairy can talk?

I hugged Poko, who was nearby, and sat down in front of the housekeeping fairy. I definitely didn’t use Poko as a shield. It’s just warm to hold him… so cozy.

“Nice to meet you, I’m Haku. I’m the child of this house. Who are you? Why are you in my room’s closet?”

I couldn’t help but ask questions one after another. The housekeeping fairy looked up at me nervously. Her brown hair was tied messily, and she wore a simple natural-colored shirt with brown shorts and wooden shoes. When I asked if she wasn’t cold, she shook her head slightly. How cute.

Even if she’s much older than me, she looks like a child. What should I do? When I looked at Grandpa Al, he just watched with a smile, clearly entertained. I wish he wouldn’t turn everything into amusement.

Then, Mee-Mee flew in from the side and bumped her head against the housekeeping fairy’s head!

Mee-Mee, watch your distance!

As I panicked, Yue climbed onto my head to calm me down.

“It’s okay. She’s just talking telepathically.”

Yue tapped my head with her staff. You have strange habits, too. If you’re going to do that, why not cast a spell? Maybe my hair will shine with a brilliant halo!

“May I speak?”

When I turned around at Mee-Mee’s voice, she looked at me with exasperation. Sorry, I couldn’t keep up the tension.

“This housekeeping fairy got lost while playing and strayed out of the fairy world. While wandering in the human world, she came here and slipped into this house full of spirits. She felt sorry for moving in without permission, so she helped with the chores at night. She stayed in this room because she found its magic comfortable. She would like to stay here if possible. What do you think?”

Wow, things move quickly with Mee-Mee around! The conversation progressed swiftly! I couldn’t have managed that.

When she mentioned the room’s magic being comfortable, my spirits nodded in agreement. Is my magic leaking out that much? Is that so?

“For spirits and good fairies, being near you is a feast.”

Huh? Good? Does that include you, sneaky Mee-Mee?

Mee-Mee’s headbutt hit my forehead directly!

Sorry! I won’t say it again!!

Mee-Mee flew off in the opposite direction from the impact, but she spun around, kicked the wall, and returned gracefully.

“Oh! Well done!”

Grandpa Al clapped and praised her. The spirits, the housekeeping fairy, and I also clapped. The atmosphere became relaxed.

So, it was decided that the housekeeping fairy would share my room’s closet!

“Mee-Mee, please make a small bed and some small furniture.”

Can you store the small item boxes in the skill warehouse for now? The storage room at the detached building will do as well.

“Certainly.”

When the closet doors are opened, it’s better to have a screen so the inside can’t be seen. Please take care of that, too.

So, a quarter of my closet was remodeled into a tiny room for the housekeeping fairy. By the way, the fairy’s name is Tak. He’s not very good at talking. He can’t stand clutter, so he folded my scattered pajamas neatly. If Martha had found them, I’d have been scolded. Thank you.

Housekeeping fairies are apparently hard for adults to see. Pure-hearted children can see them, or so they say. Maybe only pure and innocent men can see them. Yep, yep.

Mee-Mee and Yue’s cold stares are piercing, but I don’t care!

“Why can Grandpa Al see them?”

“Elves are close to spirits and fairies. Their lifespan is incomparable to humans. Just think of it as the wisdom of age.”

Grandpa Al winked and laughed.

“Still, it’s never dull with you around, Haku-boy! I’m excited to see what happens next, even at my age!”

Ahaha, he laughed heartily and was in a great mood. It’s not that I want things to happen. It’s just that everyone won’t leave me alone. I’m such a troublemaker.

Right? Don’t ignore that, Mee-Mee?

After that, I reported to Father.

“A lost housekeeping fairy will be living in my room’s closet for a while. In return for rent, he’ll help with the chores. He only needs a cup of milk as thanks. Sometimes, he said he’d like some bread. Adults can’t see him, so please take care of him.”

I bowed deeply.

“…………”

When I explained and bowed, Father, Burton, and Victor silently looked at me. Well, even I think it’s natural to be stunned by talk of spirits and fairies. It’s scary to think our house might become a fairy tale house. Father and the others sighed quietly.

“Because it’s Haku-boy…”

Victor muttered in exasperation. Because it’s me, it just happens… yeah…

I should also inform Martha and Jeff. I ran to the kitchen.

“Oh my, has the helper lately been that housekeeping fairy?”

Martha’s eyes sparkled.

“That’s right. His name is Tak. Be mindful of him when you clean my room.”

“Understood.”

Martha smiled and nodded. She never gets rattled by strange things!

On the other hand, Jeff just replied with a disinterested “Yeah…” and left it at that. He said there was no point in worrying about invisible things. I insisted that a cup of milk be left in the kitchen corner at night. In return, he demanded permission to use the detached kitchen, so I allowed access three times a week with strict time limits. It’s not very mature to make deals with a child.

Please don’t teach Jeff things that can’t be revealed to the public, Mee-Mee. Like French toast or pudding. Pizza or peperoncino, it’s too soon for that. We should start with simple salt rice balls!

Right, Mee-Mee?

“…………”

Mee-Mee, are you listening?
