Chapter 14: Last Stand at the Outpost
The forest held its breath.
Zane's fingers tightened around the rough handle of his spiked club, the weight of exhaustion dragging at his muscles. Beside him, Lyra gripped her spear, her golden eyes locked onto the figures emerging from the mist.
The Blood Pact had found them.
And this time, they had nowhere to run.
We stand here. We fight here. We survive.
A system notification flashed violently.
[BATTLE START INITIATED]
Defend the Outpost.
Defeat or Escape the Blood Pact.
Survive the Onslaught.
The ruined outpost stood as their only defense, half-collapsed walls and shattered debris surrounding them. It wasn't much, but it was all they had.
Across the clearing, the Blood Pact warriors spread out, blocking every escape route.
Arnold, the Butcher, cracked his twin cleavers together, grinning.
Iris, the Shadow, spun her daggers, eyes gleaming with bloodlust.
Orion, the Hound, had an arrow already drawn, aimed straight at them.
And then, Karl stepped forward.
The Executioner.
[NEW ENEMY DETECTED: BLOOD PACT ENFORCER]
Name: Karl the Executioner (LVL 8 – Elite Fighter)
Weapon: Warhammer (High Impact, Slow Strikes)
Ability: Earthshatter (AOE Ground Attack – Stuns Enemies in Range)
Karl's massive warhammer rested against his shoulder, the dark steel covered in dried blood.
His helmeted gaze locked onto Zane and Lyra.
"You've run long enough."
Arnold let out a deep, throaty laugh. "Hope you two enjoyed your little game of cat and mouse."
Iris vanished into the shadows, circling the ruins like a vulture.
Orion kept his bow raised, waiting for the perfect shot.
Karl took another step forward.
"Let's finish this."
[WARNING: BATTLE HAS BEGUN]
Enemies: 4 (Blood Pact Leader & Scouts)
Escape Route: None.
Victory Condition: Survive.
Karl moved first.
Faster than he should be.
With a roar, he swung his warhammer down.
BOOM—EARTHSHATTER ACTIVATED.
The ground exploded beneath Zane and Lyra, the sheer force sending them flying backward.
[-10 HP] [STUNNED – 3 Seconds]
Zane hit the ground hard, his ears ringing.
Karl's warhammer left a crater where they had stood.
Too strong. We can't fight him head-on.
Lyra rolled to her feet, shaking off the hit.
"Zane, MOVE!"
Arnold saw his opening.
A massive brute. Fast. Too close.
Zane barely had time to react before the twin cleavers came down.
CLANG—STEEL AGAINST STEEL.
Lyra blocked the strike with her spear, gritting her teeth as Arnold's strength pushed her backward.
Zane forced his legs to move, swinging his spiked club at Arnold's ribs.
[HIT! -12 HP TO ARNOLD]
Arnold grunted but barely flinched.
Instead, he laughed.
"Not bad, kid."
Then—his knee slammed into Zane's stomach.
[-8 HP] [STAGGERED]
Zane stumbled backward, gasping for air.
Arnold raised a cleaver.
"Let's see how long you last."
From his perch, Orion loosed an arrow.
It whistled through the air, aimed straight for Zane's head.
Too fast. Can't dodge.
WHOOSH—A SPEAR DEFLECTS THE ARROW.
Lyra had thrown her weapon mid-combat, knocking the arrow off course.
Zane exhaled sharply. "I owe you."
Lyra didn't respond, her eyes locked onto the battlefield.
"Focus. We're not dead yet."
A whisper of movement.
Then—a dagger at Zane's throat.
Iris had slipped behind him.
Her voice was silk and venom.
"You're too slow."
Think. React. Move.
Zane dropped to one knee, swinging his club blindly behind him.
[MISS!] [Iris Dodged]
Iris laughed, stepping back.
Then, she slashed his arm.
[-6 HP] [BLEEDING EFFECT ACTIVATED]
Zane hissed, gripping the wound.
We're losing. We need a plan.
Zane and Lyra backed toward the ruined wall, breathing heavily.
The Blood Pact hadn't even broken a sweat.
Karl rolled his shoulders, his warhammer leaving cracks in the ground.
Arnold licked his lips, eager for more blood.
Iris was already circling again, waiting to strike.
Orion raised another arrow, calculating.
We're trapped. No way out.
Then—
Zane's eyes flicked toward the collapsed wooden beams near Karl.
An idea flashed through his mind.
He looked at Lyra. "We have to drop the outpost on them."
Lyra followed his gaze—understanding instantly.
She nodded. "We lure Karl in. One shot."
[NEW OBJECTIVE: COLLAPSE THE OUTPOST]
Lure Karl under the weakened structure.
Destroy the support beams.
Escape in the chaos.
Zane moved first, swinging wildly at Karl's head.
The attack was reckless. Stupid.
But it did what it needed to do.
Karl turned toward him, amused.
He lifted his warhammer.
"Fool."
Then—he charged.
Perfect.
Lyra was already moving.
She jumped onto the broken ledge of the ruined tower, gripping the loose wooden support beam.
Karl stepped right beneath it.
Lyra drove her spear into the beam—
CRACK—THE OUTPOST COLLAPSED.
The wooden roof caved in, burying Karl under tons of rubble.
Dust exploded outward.
The Blood Pact stumbled back in shock.
A system notification appeared.
[SUCCESS! KARL IS TRAPPED UNDER RUBBLE]
Arnold: STUNNED (2 Seconds).
Iris: Disoriented.
Orion: Scanning for targets.
Zane grabbed Lyra's wrist.
"Now! Run!"
They bolted into the trees.
Behind them, Karl's roar of fury echoed through the night.
Arnold cursed. "They got away—AGAIN!"
Orion loosed another arrow—
But it missed.
Zane and Lyra vanished into the forest.
Bloodied, exhausted… but alive.
[ESCAPE SUCCESSFUL]
Karl is still alive.
The Blood Pact will return.
Find a new safe zone before they recover.
Zane collapsed against a tree, panting.
Lyra sank to her knees.
"We can't keep this up," she whispered.
Zane nodded, staring at the Bloodmoon above.
Something had to change.
Or next time…
They wouldn't survive.
