Chapter 127 - Actions on Bear Island 01.
[Chapter Size: 2300 Words.]
Third Person POV.
Bear Sland.
...
...
It was night, the sky moonless, and despite the stars above, visibility was very poor there, and the trembling sea water stirred with the advance of the ships through a blind spot on the island.
At that moment, there were some ships near that coast.
Even though there was nothing to indicate they could be attacked, with the island practically under their control, the Iron Men still kept it under surveillance, guarding the coast and the camps.
They even looked strangely toward the sea, seeing small shadows with flags that, originally white, were now darkened to camouflage during the night, as Jon had asked the men to paint them with some paint he had managed to obtain.
They watched more attentively as they noticed something moving in the sea, despite the darkness.
That was until a sharp sound arose, piercing the air. They barely had time to react, only noticing when the projectiles struck their necks directly, coming from within the island, collapsing to the ground choking while others were hit straight in the head, as they usually did not wear helmets, easily being killed and falling dead.
Jon was there, hidden at a distance, within the Bear Forest. He had returned to the camp secretly with the utmost care, to deal with the sentries who might see the ships coming from the mainland coast.
He had returned to the coast to plan what they should do, detailing the entire plan with his men — where they should go and disembark — while he would take care of the sentries at the time of the advance.
And so it continued. Jon silently killed his enemies. He didn't want to draw the attention of the other Iron Men in the camp — he wanted to maintain the element of surprise. He had only a thousand men with twenty ships, sailing in the darkness as they continued to arrive on the island.
They finally passed without alerting anyone, anchoring in a corner of the island after a few minutes. They had already reached the shore when Jon began to go to them.
He was being guided by the Iron Men who had survived the attack on the mainland coast, fulfilling their word by guiding the ship to Bear Island.
Jon checked the camp once more, eliminating any other member coming out of the tents, while heading to where his men were disembarking.
Val approached him as soon as she saw him, while he greeted her and moved toward his men gathering there.
"Listen, everyone. I want you to set up a camp here. I want at least half the men with me to eliminate each enemy camp. We won't set anything on fire. Just kill quickly — we'll burn the bodies later."
He gave the order, while many of his scouts quickly advanced with him.
The camp was still silent, with corpses and arrows stuck in vital spots all over the place, as the group approached and surrounded the camp with ease, each positioning themselves in front of the tents with weapons in hand.
Jon had given the order that when the signal was given, everyone should quickly advance to the tents with weapons and give a swift death to the surprised enemies while they slept.
"Now!" he exclaimed after seeing the last tent ready to be invaded by his men, his voice echoing through the place.
A lot of surprised screams and moans of pain began to echo throughout the camp, as each of the free men killed their target, completely clearing the place of the Iron Men.
Hysterical screams of women followed soon after.
Jon watched it all with cold eyes, while no one from his group died, massacring all the Iron Men there.
"Jon! There are many women inside the tents!" one of the men came to report.
"What should we do with them?"
"They must be from the island itself. So place them with clothes in a corner of the camp... We'll speak with them later," Jon said, while his men continued to carry out his orders.
It took time, but soon the entire camp was eliminated, while the bodies were gathered to be burned later — something almost mandatory for the free folk.
They began cleaning the place, and Jon went to the women, cautiously observing all the free folk men. After seeing what the Free Folk had done, many of them just entered the tents and raised their weapons, only to strike down the ironborn who were forcing the women to sleep with them.
Jon could see that most of the women were covered in blood, dirt, and trauma caused by the Iron Men in the tents where they were held, although the blood belonged to the ironborn who had been struck down by the free folk's weapons.
"I've seen the destruction the Iron Men caused on this island. We're here to put an end to it," Jon said, approaching the women.
"Great... As if it wasn't enough that they killed our husbands and sons, now we'll be raped by a group of savages!?" one of them said, her tone full of resentment and frustration as she looked at the free folk, wearing the clothes they kept beyond the Wall, with only a few wearing armor.
"We're not going to touch you. And you should show more respect to those who saved you, savage or not. Unless you'd prefer to go back to sleeping in the tents of those who killed your husbands and sons," Jon replied, staring firmly at the dirty and bruised woman. She fell silent.
"What's going to happen to us?" another asked, her voice trembling.
"We'll keep you safe, somewhere on the island, until we've eliminated all the Iron Men. After that, House Mormont will decide what to do with you," Jon said.
"They don't seem to trust you much," Ygritte murmured beside Jon.
"That's normal. They've lost husbands and sons, both in the war in the south and now with the invasion of these damned ironborn. Many don't even want to live anymore," Jon replied bitterly, feeling disgust for what the pirates had done to an unprepared kingdom.
"Either way, let's return to the camp. I don't want any of these women to be touched. Otherwise... well, you already know," Jon said, returning to the camp, while assigning a patrol to watch over the women and both the camp where they had disembarked and this one, throughout the night.
During the rest of the night, they rested.
At dawn, Jon summoned his men once more. He spread out the map, showing all the points where the enemy camps were located.
"All of the Iron Men's camps are here. Their main force is concentrated directly in the center, laying siege to House Mormont's stronghold."
"We'll be facing four thousand men, my lord..." one of the men murmured.
"Are you scared now?" Tormund mocked, letting out a laugh.
Jon called for silence and turned to the man who had spoken.
"Three thousand seven hundred now. We just eliminated three hundred of them in one night. And we'll keep going like this, striking silently, until we've wiped out all these camps along the coast."
He pointed to two more camps marked on the map.
"We'll keep a watch group here and here. Then we'll move to here," he said, tracing his finger to the location where the ships were.
"There were at least fifty of their ships. I want those ships, and I need them intact."
"That's definitely going to draw attention," another commented.
"And that's exactly what I want. After taking the ships without trouble, we'll have the chance to wipe them all out at once," Jon said, breaking into a wide smile.
"Of course we will... We've got a bloody dragon!" Tormund shouted, while the men responded with firm, excited smiles.
Jon simply nodded before folding the map.
"Now let's go. We've got work to do," he said quickly, and his group began to move strategically along the forest trails of the island, with Jon even surprised at the lack of animals — especially bears. The ironborn had wiped out part of them here over the moons, and they continued advancing through the forests until they finally found the next camp on the coast.
The enemies didn't even know they were surrounded before hundreds of archers began aiming from all sides. When everyone was ready, the arrows were released, falling like a deadly rain.
The Iron Men screamed in desperation. "Enemy attack!" but many died before they even understood what was happening.
There were women there too. They were gathered in a corner, and the archers avoided shooting in that direction.
When they realized they could no longer maintain the attack from a distance, Jon gave the order to advance. He himself ran toward the enemies, who were trying to light a large signal tower to warn of the attack on that camp.
They nearly succeeded, placing the flames at the base of the wood with the fire starting to spread, when suddenly Jon's leviathan axe flew directly toward the spot, hitting the wood and freezing the entire structure, killing the man who held the torch.
The axe flew back on its own, returning to Jon's hand, who made it vanish. Immediately after, he drew Dark Sister, reaping the lives of the enemies with ease.
In the end, they had eliminated another camp, leaving the place full of corpses.
Jon ordered a group to move the women to join those from the first camp.
After securing the camp, they departed for the next one at midday, which was also easy to deal with, as it was a total surprise. After killing all the scouts in the surroundings — easily tracked with the wolves and through Jon's magical sight — another massacre occurred, completing three in just a few hours, with almost no losses for Jon and his men.
After moving the women again to a safe place, he left a group of men in the camp to kill anyone who approached, since orders from the main groups on the island would likely be sent.
And so it happened. During the late afternoon, more slaughter followed, with the men killing anyone who came near the place.
Soon, they would know something was wrong, but by then the objective would already be completed.
When it was completely dark again with another moonless night, they marched toward the ships, which were in a challenging spot to reach. The terrain was open and they would be seen from at least two hundred meters away, which would prevent a surprise attack like the previous ones.
So Jon ordered all over eight hundred free folk men to wear the clothes of the Iron Men they had killed. He himself donned an enemy's armor, with an axe strapped to his waist, and advanced with the group, heading toward the main force to deceive them.
The guards at the beach camp looked surprised at the approaching group, with a slightly limited view at that hour. There were at least four hundred men there, guarding the ships. And Jon smiled as he led double that number of free folk to slaughter them.
"What happened?" someone approached.
"We came here because the Glovers sent reinforcements somehow and we had to circle the island. We need to take a few ships," Jon said as his allies gathered around him.
"Really...? But who are you?" the man asked, lifting the torch in front of Jon's face. Jon was wearing a helmet, and the man didn't recognize him, seeing only the violet eyes.
"Just someone who's going to kill you," Jon replied.
The man stood still for a few seconds, trying to process what he had just heard, with a stunned expression — until he saw Jon raise his axe and bury it into his head, killing him instantly.
"Attack!" Jon shouted, and his men rose up all at once, beginning to cut down the Iron Men around them.
It caught them completely off guard. They were still on the beach and hadn't rushed to the ships. Jon and his men had the advantage of terrain.
At the same time, the Iron Men were confused, since the attackers wore their clothes. Jon had placed a mark on the shoulder of the leather armor, using simple signs so they could distinguish allies from enemies and avoid attacking each other.
The battle continued. Quickly, Jon's group gained overwhelming advantage. The Iron Men began to retreat, trying to reach the ships — but it was already too late.
There was no escape.
Jon climbed aboard one of the ships and did the same as he had done on the mainland coast: he used magic to open the doors with ease, sending spectral wolves inside to clear out every corner.
When he finished, a man approached Jon to report the situation as he stepped off the last ship, now all cleared. Jon turned as he heard,
"My lord, a small group surrendered. What should we do with them?" he asked.
"Let's see," Jon said, leaving the ship and finding a group surrounded by his men, kneeling — there must have been at least a hundred of them, a quarter of the original group.
"Please, my lord... don't kill us!!" the man exclaimed, desperate.
"Then do this: go tell your group we've taken all the ships and we'll be waiting for them until dawn," Jon said, leaving just one man to watch him as the man ran from the beach.
"Now we just wait," Jon said calmly, as the execution of the remaining Iron Men approached with the dawn, preparing Winter through his warg connection.
