Chapter 95: Azazel vs Katerea
The air was heavy with residual energy as Izashi stood in the middle of the now-silent battlefield, his expression calm yet calculating. The magicians had been thoroughly wiped out, but he acted as though there was still work to be done. He glanced over at Rias and the others with an almost casual air, "Let's make sure none of the magicians managed to slip through."
His gaze shifted to Gasper, who was trembling and fidgeting at the corner of the room. Izashi studied the timid boy for a moment before looking away, his thoughts elsewhere. Rias, Akeno, and Kuroka began searching the building, their voices fading into the distance. Izashi, however, remained rooted to the spot, his eyes fixed on the school's new wing.
He had an inkling about what—or rather, who—was coming. The mastermind pulling the strings was about to reveal themselves.
"This is where the real show begins," Izashi muttered to himself, a slight smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
He knew the Khaos Brigade was about to make its grand entrance. It was perfect timing, really. Their appearance would push the three-way alliance between the Devils, Angels, and Fallen Angels into reality. The stakes were higher now, and Issei, with his improved strength and mastery over the Balance Breaker, might actually have a fighting chance. Asia, standing by Issei's side, radiated a quiet determination that made Izashi feel assured. Issei would never let harm come to her.
Somewhere in another part of the building, Azazel was likely explaining the latest findings about this organization to the others. But Izashi's sharp senses picked up on a shift in the magical energy around them. The influx of power was sudden, overwhelming, and much stronger than he had expected.
"Whoever this is, they're no lightweight," he mused, frowning slightly. "This power's on par with Azazel... maybe even Michael."
For a moment, Izashi considered regrouping with Rias and the others. The magicians were done for, and Gasper was safe for now. But something held him back—a gut feeling that the true confrontation was still to come.
Minutes later, the atmosphere rippled with an even stronger surge of power. This one was familiar yet foreign at the same time. A dark, oppressive energy lingered in the air, accompanied by the unmistakable aura of a dragon.
"Ophis's handiwork," Izashi concluded, his golden eyes narrowing slightly. "Must be one of those cursed snakes she's been handing out like candy."
Outside, Azazel had already taken to the sky, his black wings spread wide as he hovered with an almost lazy confidence. Izashi stepped closer to get a better view of the action. His enhanced sight caught every movement with crystal clarity as Azazel faced off against a new arrival—a woman with an intense, commanding presence.
Katerea Leviathan.
Azazel's aura radiated strength, the light energy swirling around him almost tangible. He looked relaxed, like someone playing a game he knew he couldn't lose. On the other hand, Katerea seemed tense, dodging and deflecting Azazel's relentless onslaught of light spears with incredible speed. The two of them clashed in a chaotic ballet of darkness and light, their powers colliding with earth-shaking force.
Izashi crossed his arms, watching the fight unfold with a mix of curiosity and detachment. "He's not even trying," he muttered, noting Azazel's ease with every move. "She's got power, but she's making too many mistakes."
True to his observation, Katerea faltered, and one of Azazel's light spears grazed her arm. She winced, her expression darkening as she clutched her wounded hand. But instead of retreating, she smirked and pulled something from her chest—a small, ominous-looking bottle.
Izashi's eyes sharpened. "There it is."
Katerea uncorked the bottle, ready to consume whatever twisted power lay within. But before she could take even a sip, a golden glow illuminated the battlefield. In an instant, Izashi was there. He snatched the bottle from her grasp so quickly that it seemed as if time itself had skipped a beat.
Katerea froze, staring at her empty hand in shock. She didn't even register what had happened. Azazel, who was closest to her, paused mid-air, a flicker of surprise flashing across his face before he shrugged it off.
"Show-off," Azazel muttered under his breath. Then, without missing a beat, he hurled another barrage of light spears at Katerea.
Meanwhile, Vali, who had been observing from a distance, narrowed his eyes. He recognized that golden glow. "Izashi…" he murmured, his voice tinged with a mix of awe and irritation. "No one else could pull something like that off. Even Ophis doesn't feel this oppressive."
Back in the sky, Katerea was still processing what had happened. Her confusion quickly turned to fury. "Who—what the hell just happened?" she snarled, her voice echoing across the battlefield. She scanned her surroundings, but there was no sign of the mysterious thief who had taken her bottle.
Izashi had already returned to his original spot, holding the bottle casually as if it were nothing more than a toy. He didn't bother revealing himself, content to let the chaos play out.
The battle continued, with Azazel gradually gaining the upper hand. Katerea's movements grew slower and sloppier, her attacks more desperate. Azazel finally seized the opportunity to close the gap, delivering a crushing blow with a massive spear of light that sent her crashing to the ground.
Hovering above her, he crossed his arms and looked down at her with a smirk. "You know," he began, his tone dripping with mockery, "it was really stupid of you to come here alone. This place is crawling with people who could take you out without breaking a sweat. Four Maou-level individuals, to be precise. What were you thinking?"
Katerea groaned, struggling to push herself off the ground. Her hand trembled as she reached for something—anything—that could turn the tide. But no matter how much she tried to summon her strength, it was clear that she was done for.
The once-tense battlefield was now eerily calm, the lingering crackle of energy hinting at the skirmishes that had occurred moments ago. The school building remained intact, its sturdy structure untouched thanks to the protective spells cast by Serafall, Sirzechs, and Michael. Their combined power ensured the fight wouldn't spill over into unintended destruction.
Azazel, hovering mid-air, couldn't help but smirk. "Well, at least we don't have to worry about property damage. That's one less headache."
His attention shifted to Katerea Leviathan, who had just unleashed a chaotic burst of energy in her frustration. Her actions had decimated some of her own forces, the unfortunate magicians obliterated by her raw power. Azazel, never one to hold back commentary, let out a mocking laugh.
"Seriously?" he said, raising an eyebrow. "Taking out your own allies? That's one way to make things harder for yourself. Bold strategy, I'll give you that."
Katerea's expression darkened, her eyes burning with fury as she snapped back, "Shut your mouth! You don't get to lecture me, you filthy Fallen! Now tell me where the bottle is. The one with the snake from the Ouroboros Dragon. Where is it?"
At her words, Azazel's smirk faded slightly. His gaze sharpened as he took in the seriousness of her demand.
'The snake of Ouroboros Dragon? he thought. So that's what was in the bottle Izashi took. If she's desperate to retrieve it, this could be worse than I thought.'
Azazel let out a dramatic sigh, rubbing the back of his neck. "Look, I don't know where your precious snake bottle went. But even if I did, what kind of idiot do you think I am? Like I'd just hand over information like that." He tilted his head with a mischievous grin. "Now, how about we settle this the fun way?"
Without waiting for a response, he conjured another light spear, this one enormous, its shimmering form almost as large as the school building itself. With a lazy flick of his wrist, he hurled it at Katerea.
The glowing spear tore through the air, radiating enough heat to make the surrounding temperature spike. Katerea's eyes widened, but she didn't panic. Instead, she poured dense waves of devil magic into her hand, forming a barrier that crackled with dark energy. She swung her hand forward, slicing through the light spear with surprising precision.
Azazel let out a low whistle, clearly impressed. "Not bad, not bad at all. Guess you're not all talk."
Katerea didn't bother with a retort, her breathing steady as she prepared for another attack. But before she could move, Azazel clenched his fists. The shattered pieces of the spear morphed mid-air, transforming into glowing ropes of light that shot toward Katerea like hungry serpents. They coiled around her arms and legs, binding her tightly.
Her eyes widened in shock as she struggled against the glowing binds, but the more she resisted, the tighter they became.
"Yeah, that's not gonna work," Azazel said with a smirk, casually floating closer. "This is a Light Bind. Struggling only makes it worse. Pretty clever, huh? I've got to say, you're putting up a good fight, but you'd need someone on Sirzechs's level to break out of this. Hate to break it to you, but you're not that strong."
Katerea gritted her teeth, glaring at Azazel with pure hatred. The binding sapped her strength with every passing moment, and no amount of writhing seemed to loosen the light ropes. Still, her pride wouldn't let her admit defeat.
"You're making a mistake," she spat, her voice laced with venom. "You're on the wrong side of history. You could join us, Azazel. With your power, we could rebuild this world into something far greater than it is now. Think about it—you could be a part of a new era!"
Azazel chuckled, shaking his head. "Oh, come on. That's the oldest pitch in the book. 'Join us, and we'll make the world better!' Newsflash—I like the world just fine the way it is. Well, minus a few annoying things, like paperwork and tax season." He grinned at her frustration. "Anyway, thanks, but no thanks. I'm not interested in your little club."
Katerea's lips curled into a twisted smirk, catching Azazel off guard. He stiffened, his instincts flaring. He'd seen that kind of look before—it was the look of someone with another ace up their sleeve. His eyes darted around, scanning for any hint of her next move, but she remained still, bound tightly by the light ropes.
"What's with the smirk?" Azazel asked warily, his tone losing its playful edge. "You planning something? Hate to break it to you, but you're not in a position to pull any tricks."
Katerea said nothing, letting her grin speak for itself. And then it happened. Azazel felt a sudden, inexplicable drain on his strength. His light bindings around Katerea flickered, their glow dimming ever so slightly.
His heart sank as realization dawned. He clenched his jaw, his voice a low growl. "No... don't tell me…"
A figure emerged from the shadows, their steps calm and deliberate. The air around them seemed to ripple with raw power. Azazel's eyes narrowed as he turned to face the newcomer.
"Vali," he said, his voice heavy with both anger and disappointment.
Standing there in his Balance Breaker armor, Vali looked as calm as ever, his white-and-blue armor gleaming under the moonlight. His expression was unreadable as he regarded Azazel with a detached gaze.
"I told you before, didn't I?" Vali said, his voice even. "I want to fight. I want to grow stronger. Peace won't help me with that. Being with Ophis... it's the only way I can achieve my goal."
Azazel stared at his former subordinate, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. "So, this is what it's come to, huh? You've thrown in your lot with the Khaos Brigade. All for the sake of your little dream."
Vali didn't flinch. "It's not a little dream," he said simply. "I will surpass the Great Red. That's my goal, and I'll do whatever it takes to reach it."
