[Chapter 3: An Epic In The Making (III)]

Last Time on Chapter 002 of [From Shadows To The Spotlight] —

Sam nodded slowly, looking out across the bustling set with a new sense of reverence. "I can't wait to see it."

"Neither can I, kid," Mike murmured, a faint smile on his lips. "Neither can I."

They stood in silence for a moment, watching as the set hummed with life, a silent tribute to the man they both admired, whose work had brought them here, on the verge of witnessing a new chapter in his legendary career.

Now Continuing —

Sam said after a while, deep admiration etched into his expression. "Man… it's no wonder everyone respects him so much."

"Respect isn't even the word," Mike replied. "It's… something more. It's like he's a force of nature around here. When Alex walks onto a set, everyone wants to bring their best. It's contagious."

Another moment of quiet settled over them, and Sam's gaze shifted back to the set. "You know, I read somewhere that he's the one who added that little piano melody to the theme in Home Alone—the one that plays just before Kevin does the whole swinging paint can trick. That true?"

Mike looked impressed. "You've done your homework, huh?"

Sam shrugged, a shy grin tugging at his lips. "Guess I couldn't help it. I asked around about him. I think everyone's got their favorite Alex Masters scene, don't they? Even if they don't know that it was him behind its creation."

Mike chuckled warmly. "Yeah, that's the thing. Everyone does. There's something about his work that just sticks with you. And it's not just fans—it's the people he's worked with, too. Every shot, every detail, every character he creates, he leaves a piece of himself in it. And that's what makes everything that he has been a part of so memorable, making it hard to forget. It stays with you."

Sam looked around, taking in the sprawling setup and the anticipation that seemed to hang in the air. "So… what do you think this one's going to be like? I mean, with everything he's done for nearly two decades, like you said before. You'd think he'd be ready to just retire and relax."

Mike shook his head, his gaze turning thoughtful. "Retire? Not a shot, kid, that's not Alex. If anything, this feels like he is just getting started. Like maybe, after all these years, he's about to make his real masterpiece."

A shiver ran down Sam's spine at the conviction in Mike's voice. "You really think so?"

"I don't think so," Mike replied with a steady, confident smile. "I know. This one's special. This is the one that'll make history."

Sam could feel the weight of Mike's words settle over him. It was a strange feeling, standing on a mist-covered hillside in New Zealand, knowing he was part of something that would echo in film history. As he looked back at the set, he noticed subtle hints about what they might be filming—props like rustic swords, pieces of broken armor, and large carved stones arranged in intricate patterns across the landscape. His excitement was palpable, even as he tried to play it cool.

"So," Sam began with an impish grin, his curiosity getting the best of him. "You really don't know what it is we're filming here? Not even a hint?"

Mike just shrugged, grinning back. "Believe me, I've been trying to figure it out too. Whatever it is, Alex has kept a tight lid on it. Everything's been on a need-to-know basis. All I know is that we're going to be out here for months, maybe even a whole year.. shooting some kind of epic, at least that's what I think, judging by the scope of the set and props they're bringing in…"

He gestured to the sprawling landscape and all the tents, towers, and ancient-looking props. "It's big. Bigger in scale than anything I've seen him do before."

Just then, one of the junior assistant directors walked past, clipboard in hand, looking a little frazzled as she coordinated with different crew members. Mike gave her a quick wave. "Hey, Sarah! Got any secrets to spill?"

She laughed, shaking her head. "Not a chance, Mike. All I know is that they want the props reset before sunrise tomorrow. If you're dying to know, just ask Alex yourself." She gave Sam a friendly nod before hurrying on.

Mike chuckled as she disappeared down the hillside. "See? Tight-lipped, every last one of them. But I'd bet good money it's something from the fantasy genre. I mean, we're in New Zealand, this whole place feels straight out of a fantasy author's picture book, especially these sets and props we are setting up."

Sam's mind raced. "It's got to be something huge, then, right? With this many people on set, the secrecy and everything?"

Mike nodded, his face turning serious. "Yeah, it's bound to be. And you know, with Alex, he doesn't just pick up a story because it's popular or if its odds are looking favorable according to market audience reports. He picks it up because it means something to him. Every project has to resonate with him on a deeper level."

The two of them started walking down the hillside to get their blood flowing, the cool air filling their lungs, and Sam couldn't help but feel the grandeur of the landscape in a way he never had before. This wasn't just another film set—it felt like an entire world of fantasy and wonder was just waiting to come alive. The crew members scurried about, making last-minute preparations as more trucks rolled in, unloading even more props and costumes.

Mike tilted his head, looking thoughtful. "You know, I just remembered one of the early meetings. Alex was talking about the story—he didn't give any details, but he talked about heroes, about people rising up even when it seems like everything in the world is against them. And he said something that stuck with me."

Sam glanced over, his curiosity piqued. "What did he say?"

"He said, 'People don't need perfect heroes. They need real ones. The ones who stumble and fall, who get broken down, but keep fighting anyway because they've something they believe in.' And I remember thinking, that's probably what sets him apart. He's not here to give people grandiose fairy tales that hold no substance. He's here to tell them a story, one the audiences wont even realize when they got themselves emotionally invested in."

Sam felt a chill at those words. He imagined Alex on the set, eyes scanning every detail, making sure it all felt as authentic and close to the image of the world that he wanted to portray to his audience. "That explains a lot, actually," he said, nodding slowly. "It's like he's trying to connect with something inside each person, even if it's just through a few scenes or lines of dialogue."

Mike gave Sam a knowing look. "Exactly. And that's why people stay with him, even after he's pushed them to their limits. He challenges you to look deeper, to find a part of yourself you didn't know was there."

As they walked further, the two passed by a group of extras, all dressed in elaborate medieval garb—worn leather armor, tattered cloaks, and various weapons slung over their backs. They laughed and chatted, their faces painted with fake dirt and bruises, yet the camaraderie between them was real. The sight made Sam wonder about the characters they'd soon embody on camera. He caught bits of their conversation—some talking about sword-fighting choreography, others discussing the long hours they'd spent practicing different stances and strikes with their swordplay instructor.

"It looks like these guys are getting pretty invested, too," Sam said with a grin, as he gestured towards the hyped up extras. "You think Alex has them all as dedicated as the main cast?"

Mike chuckled. "Oh, he does. He's got a rule for his extras: if you're in the scene, you're living it. It doesn't matter if you're the hero or just a face in the crowd. He wants them all to believe they're in this world, so when the cameras start rolling, there's no faking it."

"Imagine you're in the theater watching this epic battle happen right in front of you, but for a second your attention just goes to this background that is play fighting in the backdrop, as if he was entertaining his kid in a game of knights and dragons. That one small detail will break your immersion and make the entire scene look fake and phony. And that is absolutely unacceptable on our set. So even our extra, give it their all, on every single take."

Sam watched the extras with a newfound respect. He could tell they weren't just here for a paycheck—they were here to be part of something bigger, something meaningful. It made him realize just how much care and respect Alex had for every part of his production, from the biggest stars down to the extras in the background.

Mike gave him a light nudge. "Welcome to the world of Alex Masters, kid. Where nothing's half-hearted, and everyone's in it for the long haul."

Just then, Sam noticed a commotion up ahead. A group of production assistants were hauling a massive wooden structure—a set piece that looked like a ruined gate, vines twisting up its sides and faded symbols carved into the wood. The whole thing looked as though it had been weathered by the elements, both man and nature, for centuries, even though Sam knew it was freshly made.

"Wow," Sam whispered. "They really went all out, huh?"

Mike grinned. "This is just a small taste of it. I heard there's a scene they're prepping further up the hill, with entire villages set up. Every detail there looks real to the eye, down to the last leaf of the tree, which was painstakingly handcrafted by our dedicated team of prop artists. That's what happens when Alex gets involved—every frame is like its own painting coming to life on the screen, telling its own story."

Sam was quiet for a moment, taking it all in. The sheer scale, the care in every little detail—it felt like he was standing on the edge of something monumental. "I gotta admit," he said finally, "I'm nervous. I mean, being part of something this big… it's a little overwhelming."

Mike clapped him on the back, a reassuring smile on his face. "That's normal, kid. Everyone feels it on their first time on one of Alex's sets, especially one of this scale. But trust me, by the end of this, you'll see why he's one of the hidden legends in Hollywood. And who knows? Maybe you'll even get to be a part of that legend, too."

Just then, a voice called out from further up the path. Sam recognized it as the junior assistant director, who was calling the crew together for the morning briefing. As everyone gathered around, Sam felt a surge of anticipation. This was it—the start of something unforgettable.

As he joined the group, standing among actors, crew members, and the quiet beauty of the majestic countryside hills, he felt the weight of what they were about to create. And somewhere in the crowd, he spotted his new boss, Alex himself. Despite the man's towering brutish physique, he had a calm and gentle aura as he patiently stood at the back, with a quiet smile on his face as he took in the assembled team before him.

The team quieted down as Alex finally stepped forward, his eyes scanning the crowd with a mix of warmth and determination. Sam could sense the respect everyone had for him—the kind of respect that doesn't come from fame alone, but from trust built over countless hours of hard work and dedication. Even the crew members, who looked sleep-deprived and weary, perked up as Alex began speaking.

"Good morning, everyone," Alex greeted, his voice clear and audible yet calm. "I know you're all curious about the project we're working on here, and I really appreciate your patience and compliance with the measures we took to ensure the secrecy of this shoot. Trust me, it's worth the wait and the hassle I had and will be putting you through in the future."

A few people exchanged glances, anticipation flickering across their faces. Sam felt a rush of excitement. Whatever Alex was about to reveal, he knew it would be something unforgettable.

He wished he had a camera to record the scene, but then his eyes caught a small camera crew filming the scene. It would only be later, upon asking Mike, that he would find out that they were a behind-the-scenes filming crew that were shooting promotional material.

"But before I talk about this project, first let me address the reasons why we had to maintain such secrecy." That statement had the crew at the edges of their seats, figuratively.

"You all must be well aware of all the shooting difficulties the Titanic crew is facing. Every week I receive a few calls from James about how some new kind of nuisance spawned in his set. Now, you must also be aware that Titanic is a collaboration project between our studio and 20th Century Fox."

"If it were up to me, we never would've announced the filming of the project this early, and I would've never selected locations for its sets to be this publicly accessible." Alex looked genuinely peeved at how the crew of the Titanic was doing, probably because it was his own money that he had invested in the project.

"They made all these mistakes, and on top of that, they couldn't maintain proper control of the crew," He said, hinting at the malicious food poisoning incident that took place last week and put a few crew members in the hospital. "And now look at them, surrounded by crowds of film enthusiasts and paparazzi that are dying to get a sneak peek into the work that is going on behind the scenes."

"I really do not want our project to suffer the same fate as theirs, and as such, we had to enforce all the measures we could to not let anyone find out what kind of film we will be working on here and that we are even here shooting." Alex chuckled mischievously as he continued. "The paps still think that I'm in California shooting the action film that we already wrapped up filming last month."

"Now, I won't talk about why I'm so emotionally invested in this project and what it means to me. Let's talk numbers, because that's the kind of thing that's easier to wrap our heads around. This project that we will be working on is a series of films—a trilogy, in fact—that we will be filming in one go."
