From Foes To Soulmates

Chapter 18: A Chance encounter

It was Friday evening, and Akane was excited for a change of pace. She and her three close friends, Yui, Mei, and Haruka, had made plans for a relaxing dinner to kick off the weekend. They chose a cozy restaurant near the school, known for its delicious food and lively atmosphere.

As the four girls walked in, the scent of sizzling dishes and warm spices filled the air, and Akane couldn't help but feel her stomach rumble. They found a table near the window, ordered their favorite dishes, and settled into easy conversation, laughter punctuating every story and joke.

Just as their first dishes were being brought to the table, Akane happened to glance toward the entrance—and froze. Walking into the restaurant, laughing loudly and nudging each other, was none other than Zenkichi and his group of friends, Ryota and Hiroshi.

"Is that... Zenkichi?" Yui asked, noticing Akane's surprised expression.

Mei giggled. "Wow, what are the odds?"

Haruka grinned, leaning closer to Akane. "Isn't this, like, fate or something?"

Akane rolled her eyes but couldn't hide the slight blush creeping onto her cheeks. "It's just a coincidence, guys."

At that moment, Zenkichi spotted Akane's table, his face lighting up in surprise before a smirk crept onto his face. With a wave, he and his friends made their way over to them.

"Well, well," Zenkichi said, crossing his arms. "Looks like the stars aligned, and here we are."

Akane raised an eyebrow. "Don't flatter yourself, Zenkichi. We were here first."

Zenkichi shrugged with a grin. "Then I guess that means you invited us to sit with you."

Before Akane could protest, Ryota and Hiroshi pulled chairs over, and their two groups were suddenly sharing one large table. The atmosphere was instantly lively, with the boys trying to introduce themselves to Akane's friends while also teasing Zenkichi mercilessly for his "smooth move."

"So, Akane," Zenkichi said, once they'd settled down and the food had started arriving. "What's your go-to order here?"

Akane didn't miss a beat. "It's the spicy miso ramen. It's the best thing on the menu."

Zenkichi looked slightly taken aback. "Wait, you like spicy food?"

Akane smirked. "Surprised?"

He shrugged. "Didn't expect it. You don't really look like the spicy type."

Akane rolled her eyes. "What's that even supposed to mean?"

Before Zenkichi could dig himself further into a hole, their meals started arriving, and everyone eagerly dove into their food. As they ate, conversations flowed naturally between the two groups. Akane couldn't help but glance over occasionally, curious about what Zenkichi had ordered.

"Hey, Zenkichi," Haruka piped up with a curious grin, "what's your favorite dish here?"

Zenkichi shrugged. "Simple—I always go for the teriyaki chicken bowl. Nothing beats it."

Akane raised an eyebrow. "Seriously? You're such a typical guy."

He shot her a mock-offended look. "Excuse me, but teriyaki chicken is a classic for a reason. Sometimes you just have to stick with what works."

The rest of the table laughed, and before long, everyone was swapping bites, offering tastes of their different dishes. Akane tried a bite of Zenkichi's teriyaki chicken, raising her eyebrows in surprise.

"Alright, I'll admit," she said reluctantly, "this is actually pretty good."

Zenkichi grinned, clearly pleased with himself. "See? I have excellent taste."

Akane just shook her head with a smile, wondering when she'd let herself start enjoying his smugness. The night wore on with endless laughter, friendly debates, and even some light-hearted teasing between Akane and Zenkichi. By the time they were ready to leave, she couldn't deny that she'd enjoyed herself more than expected.

As they left the restaurant, Zenkichi fell into step beside her. "I'm glad we ran into each other," he said, his tone unusually sincere.

Akane looked up, surprised to find him smiling—not his usual smug grin, but a genuine, warm smile. "Yeah," she replied softly. "Me too."

They walked in comfortable silence for a moment before their friends caught up to them, filling the air with chatter and jokes once again. But Akane couldn't shake the strange warmth lingering between her and Zenkichi. It was as if, in that busy restaurant, she'd learned a little more about him, and he about her. And, for once, it felt… right.
