Forge of Fate

Chapter 62: Ch 62: Testing Armaments

The forge glowed with the steady heat of burning Embersteel, casting flickering shadows on Kalem's focused face. Surrounding him were an array of weapons, each gleaming with an experimental brilliance. Over the past week, Kalem had devoted himself to one singular purpose: testing the potential of the Lynthian Crystal. With every swing, every strike, and every clash, he sought to unlock the full extent of its power while addressing its limitations.

Kalem had produced a variety of weapons, each designed with a specific combat style in mind. The Lynthian Crystal was embedded into modular sections of the weapons, allowing it to be swapped or adjusted as needed. Among his creations were:

Polearm: A lightweight yet durable spear with the crystal set into the shaft just below the blade. The weapon emitted an almost electric hum when wielded, the crystal amplifying each thrust to pierce even the toughest hide.

Longsword: A balanced, two-handed blade with a groove along the spine to house the crystal. Its strikes carried a resonant force, shattering lesser weapons on contact.

Standard Sword: A single-handed sword with the crystal mounted in the pommel, enhancing the wielder's speed and reflexes.

Axe: A broad-headed axe with the crystal embedded at the base of the head, giving each swing an explosive edge that cracked stone.

Mace: A spiked mace with the crystal at the core, sending vibrations through its target on impact.

Flail: A chain-linked weapon where the crystal sat within the handle, its energy channeled into each chaotic swing.

Each design had been forged with precision and care, yet Kalem knew they were just prototypes. The true test would come in how they performed in the field.

Kalem chose an open clearing at the edge of the jagged terrain, far enough from the forge to avoid any damage to his workspace. With Tharic observing from a safe distance—flask of ale in hand, as usual—Kalem began his trials.

The polearm was the first weapon he tested. The crystal's energy coursed through the shaft, amplifying each strike with a kinetic pulse that split a reinforced practice dummy in half. The weapon moved almost as if it had a will of its own, its precision eerie.

The longsword came next. Kalem swung it in wide arcs, the blade carving through air with an audible hum. When it collided with a boulder he'd placed as a target, the stone shattered into fragments. He marveled at the blade's efficiency but noted how the crystal's power caused a slight imbalance, making it harder to recover from swings.

The standard sword offered surprising versatility. The crystal enhanced Kalem's reflexes, allowing him to deflect a series of thrown projectiles with ease. However, prolonged use made his arm feel unusually heavy, as if the crystal's energy drained his strength.

The axe and mace were devastating, each blow amplified to bone-crushing force. Yet the sheer power of the weapons made them unwieldy for extended combat. The flail was perhaps the most chaotic of them all; its strikes carried erratic pulses of energy, unpredictable yet destructive.

As the tests continued, Kalem realized a fundamental problem: while the Lynthian Crystal significantly enhanced the performance of each weapon, its attachment also created vulnerabilities. The crystal's exposed position made it a target in battle. A single well-placed strike could render a weapon useless—or worse, cause an uncontrolled release of energy.

"Damn," Kalem muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. The weapons were impressive, but they were far from practical. If the crystal's power couldn't be contained or integrated more subtly, it might be more of a liability than an asset.

Tharic, who had been silently observing until now, spoke up. "Yer thinkin' too small, lad," he said, taking a swig from his flask. "That crystal's got power, aye, but yer tryin' to force it into a cage. Power like that needs to flow, not be boxed up."

Kalem frowned, considering the dwarf's words. Tharic's point was valid—the crystal seemed to resonate best when allowed to interact freely with its surroundings. But how could he harness that power without physically attaching the crystal to a weapon?

That night, Kalem sat by the forge, sketching ideas in the soot-covered notebook he'd started keeping. The crystal's properties were unique: it absorbed ambient magic and amplified it, particularly the magic of living beings. Perhaps, instead of embedding the crystal into the weapons, he could find a way to channel its energy externally.

The idea of a focus core began to take shape. Kalem envisioned a device—small and wearable—that could harness the crystal's energy and transfer it into the wielder's weapon through proximity rather than direct attachment. It would require delicate craftsmanship and precise calibration, but if successful, it could revolutionize the way he used the crystal.

He set the notebook aside and picked up the dagger he'd forged during Vornar's final trial. The blade glinted in the forge's light, a reminder of how far he'd come. If he could master the Lynthian Crystal, it would mark a new chapter in his journey—a blend of craft, combat, and the arcane.

Kalem spent the rest of the night experimenting, his mind alive with possibilities. He knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy; each discovery brought new challenges, new questions, and new dangers. But as the first rays of dawn crept into the forge, Kalem felt a renewed sense of purpose.

The Lynthian Crystal was more than a relic of his past—it was a key to the future. And Kalem was determined to unlock every door it could open.
