Chapter 569: A Thunderclap Growing in Secret (Part 2)
"Aow, aow aow." Jinya skillfully backed up to the optimal distance and began to complain in cries.
"What? Leopard Sister hit you? A patch of fur got pulled out? Let me see if it's grown back yet?"
"Aow aow aow, no, you come back and help me beat her up!"
Jinya was in tears, refusing to show Chen Ying the patch of fur that had been pulled out. It was so ugly, she wasn't pretty anymore.
"Our Jinya is the prettiest, even without fur." The voice coaxing his daughter was so soft it could drip water. Beside him, Dao Meihua glanced at him, her lips curled slightly, and she continued her work.
Lucky Leopard's big eyes rolled around, secretly lifting its head to look at the computer. Whoa, a long-haired creature, so ugly it's unique!
Jinya's eyes were sharp and immediately saw the half-exposed head popping up. Her coquettish words stuck in her throat, and her tone turned cold.
"Do you have other cats outside again?"
So enraged she could cry! At that moment, being beaten up by Leopard Sister didn't matter anymore.
Jinya murmured twice, turned, and ran off, still shouting as she ran, "The two-legged beast has other new cats outside again!"
Leopard Sister lay on the high platform, letting out a long breath, rolling over to expose her soft belly. Beside her, Brother Leopard, who had fallen asleep, was woken up by Jinya's shout. He glanced around, yawned, and continued sleeping on his wife's belly.
What's the big deal if there are other cats? Can he drag them back, or can they follow?
As for Bai Bingyang over on the other side, this guy covered his ears with his paws and slept soundly under the wooden frame.
In the end, the only one responding to Jinya was Little Jin.
Little Jin, still sleepy, hugged Jinya, licked her a couple of times, murmured twice, telling her not to fuss, just sleep. What else to do in this warm weather after eating and drinking to contentment?
Jinya ran off and didn't come back, and Mengmeng took over the video.
"Brother Ying, how's it going on your end now?"
"Alright, progress is relatively smooth. We should be able to complete the mission as planned. It should be about twenty days or so before we can return."
The subsequent research in the laboratory would be continued by a team led by two doctors. His role in the laboratory wasn't as big as theirs.
Mengmeng also saw Lucky Leopard and curiously asked about it. Hearing Chen Ying talk about the leopard's achievements and its mischievous deeds made her laugh.
"It's a pity it can't come to Jiamu Gully. It would be even more lively here."
They chatted about gossip for a bit. Before hanging up, Mengmeng hesitated, looking at Chen Ying.
"Brother Ying, I feel like Jinya's condition seems a bit off. Professor Bai went to the base to guide a new veterinarian in treating a sick and injured wild giant panda. Little Sen and I are unsure. We even asked Dr. Ou and Little Chen to check, but they're also not sure. Should we draw blood from Jinya for a check?"
"Is she ill?" Chen Ying instantly became nervous. "If she's sick, do whatever tests are necessary. Jinya is quite good, she shouldn't resist drawing blood."
Mengmeng was silent for a moment, then looked up at Chen Ying, "Brother Ying, Little Sen and I discussed it, and we feel like Jinya might be pregnant."
With a "bang," the cup in Dao Meihua's hand fell onto the table. Luckily, it was a thermos cup with a lid on it, or it would have shattered.
"Mengmeng, are you sure?"
Chen Ying also grew tense, his fingers gripping the mouse turning white.
Jinya being pregnant is a good thing, but it might also not be a good thing.
If it's from some male lynx, that's one thing; at worst, Little Jin would have to deal with it. But if it's what he's thinking, it's uncertain if the cub can even be born.
Even if it is born, it might not survive, or it might end up growing old in loneliness.
"Mengmeng, call the teacher, ask him to come back as soon as possible after he's done over there. Before he returns, it's best not to conduct any tests on Jinya. I'm worried..."
Chen Ying didn't finish his sentence. His brows were furrowed tightly as he thought it over, "I'll try to speed up things here to come back early."
Without someone influential at the emergency station, he worried that Mengmeng and Little Sen couldn't protect Jinya.
"Don't worry, I'll call my brother to have him and my sister-in-law stay there for a few days."
Although Brother Dao is not involved in animal conservation, the Dao family has invested a lot of effort and funds into conservation efforts, and the higher-ups have to give them some face.
Chen Ying wasn't afraid that anyone would mistreat Jinya; he was concerned that without his presence, those people's excessive enthusiasm might stress Jinya out.
No matter where the cub in Jinya's belly came from, it's a treasure of Jiamu Gully, a super treasure!
Compared to Jinya, even the fishing cat isn't that appealing.
Still, no matter what, he had to finish up things on his end before talking.
Chen Ying didn't call Professor Bai; he worried that suddenly calling might raise others' suspicions. It was better to have Mengmeng lure the teacher back to check on Jinya.
Chen Ying, restless in his heart, scratched Lucky Leopard, making it uncomfortable. The creature sneezed and slipped from his grasp, trotting off into the woods.
"Mr. Chen, the camera just detected that the fishing cat lingered for a while in the northwest corner of the camp by the ditch."
There were three omniview cameras installed around the camp, primarily for warning purposes, and they happened to catch the fishing cat lingering around for some time, immediately sparking the researchers' interest, who were just shy of putting a tracking collar on it.
If it wasn't inconvenient due to her pregnancy, the collar would have been arranged long ago. They didn't know who initially placed the collar when they brought her in since it fell off right beside the wetland, both of them too. Could they have unlinked each other? One could only speculate there might have been some mistake in the technique of whoever put it on initially.
Reporting this to Chen Ying, another team member was installing a camera where the fishing cat had paused. Chen Ying took a look and suddenly noticed it seemed pretty suitable as a lair.
Firstly, this place was slightly elevated, not worried about flooding unless the water rose significantly. Secondly, there was a hole in the bank, seemingly a bit broken, but still usable.
So the question arose, Why did the fishing cat come to seek a delivery room? But why so close to the camp?
Chen Ying pointed to the tree hole, instructing the staff to aim the camera there.
"If she's indeed eyeing this tree hole, she should give birth within the next two days. Keep an eye on the surrounding environment, and try not to let any predators or snakes cause the kittens to perish."
Returning to camp, Chen Ying made some notes in his book about the fishing cat in the village and the one near the camp ready to give birth. Why did both mother cats choose a birthing den so close to humans? It couldn't possibly be because humans gave them a sense of security, right?
That night around 1:00 a.m., the mother cat stood in front of the camera with a tilapia in her mouth, glanced sideways, then turned to the edge of the tree hole.
She put down the fish, devoured it, and then squatted down to groom herself.
The spot where she ate was two to three meters from the tree hole. Now full, she jumped into the tree hole, explored back and forth a few times, lay on her side, and yawned.
She slept for about three and a half hours. Before five, the mother cat woke up to tidy up and arrange her birthing room.
She didn't go out the whole day after that until around 3:00 a.m. the next night. Then she let out a low wailing sound, with a hint of pain.
The night watch team member woke up Chen Ying and the rest of the team, and they gathered around the monitor to watch the fishing cat in the tree hole entering labor.
Nobody knew how long it had been when a head squeezed in among the people, glanced at the screen, and made a low rumbling of doubt. Without getting an answer, Lucky backed out, its eyes rolling, turning to run towards the tree hole.
Chen Ying was quick-eyed and grabbed it, "Don't go causing trouble, or I'll beat you."
Lucky hummed in discontent, so Chen Ying sat down, clamped its neck with his arm, and refused to let it leave his side.
This troublemaker, if it startled the fishing cat in labor, losing a cub would be unbearable pain.
On the other side, the video was already connected to the host over at the station, and the local conservation team members were also watching the mother fishing cat giving birth, sharing the live stream to the base's project group.
Base project staff watched while whispering to each other.
"Does Brother Ying have a birthing buff? How does he get to see an Asian elephant giving birth and now a fishing cat giving birth? We've been working on this project for so many years and never encountered it once!"
"Exactly. I just talked to Dr. Jason over there, and he said this fishing cat initially didn't nest near the camp. It moved over temporarily, and they were puzzled. I think all these cats are drawn to Brother Ying. The influence of Great Virtue extends to its descendants."
Without eating a lemon, it was still sour. But they had long accepted reality. The gap between people could sometimes be greater than between a person and a dog!
