Chapter 528: All Bao Bao, All Good Sons of Two-Legged Beasts
The emergency rescue location was chosen as an abandoned radar station base.
All the facilities and equipment inside had been dismantled, but the overall framework was still intact. A generator and some small emergency equipment could be used immediately when put inside.
Emergency rescue on-site was a last resort since the snow leopard was in extremely poor condition and could not endure long transportation, even if it would take less than five hours.
While they were working together from three sides to rescue the snow leopard, Kelas and Aleksey had already led another team to the radar station base to set up the rescue room. Cars couldn't pass through the mountains, so they used motorcycles and cattle to carry the equipment in.
Chen Ying had opportunistically given the snow leopard a life-sustaining pill while contacting the other two sides earlier.
But after all, this was not an Immortal Golden Pill that could revive the dead and regenerate flesh and bones; it could only extend the survival time of the dying animal.
The dying snow leopard was almost losing consciousness, its head resting on its forelegs, breathing weakly.
After feeding it the pill, Chen Ying began to check its injuries.
The claw marks from the wolves resulted in roughly twenty to thirty wounds, with three or four exposing the bone. There were also numerous bite wounds. The most fatal injury, however, was the one caused by the wolf embedded in its abdomen, and additionally, its left foreleg suffered an open fracture possibly accompanied by internal bleeding, and its body temperature was low.
Chen Ying wrapped his coat around its body to keep it warm, continuously calling for it to stay alert, as rescue personnel were arriving soon.
It must be said that the speed of the rescue teams from the three countries was indeed very fast.
Half an hour later, animal protection personnel from the Russian side also arrived at the scene, bringing rescue equipment.
An hour after the emergency call, the female snow leopard lay on the temporary surgical bed.
The current problem was a disagreement over the treatment plan.
The treatment of external wounds was straightforward — clean thoroughly and suture — but there was a dispute about the handling of the foreleg.
The Russian side felt that, given the current conditions and the female snow leopard's physical state, amputation to save its life was most appropriate. However, Chen Ying believed that, even though it was an open fracture, the limb could be preserved with initial treatment.
The Kazakh animal protection personnel lacked experience in this area and could only provide assistance. Upon seeing the two sides at an impasse, the Kazakh leader helplessly asked if they could immediately decide on a treatment plan, suggesting a combination of Eastern and Western medicine if possible.
Just as the Russian personnel were forcefully trying to make the decision for amputation, Chen Ying turned the screen of his tablet towards them.
On the other side of the video call was Professor Everett and his colleague, a very famous animal medicine expert from the Russian side.
After understanding the situation, the two highly regarded international experts recommended they implement limb-preserving treatment.
"Although this snow leopard has an open fracture, the situation is better than anticipated. There is no comminuted fracture, only a potential infection at the fracture site, so immediate debridement, fracture realignment, fixation, anti-infection, and tetanus shots must be completed."
Chen Ying rapidly discussed his treatment plan with the two professors, and meanwhile, the team in charge of debridement was nearing the end of their work. Whether to carry out Chen Ying's treatment plan needed to be decided quickly.
After a discussion among the Russian side members, they again asked Chen Ying some surgical details, finally deciding to implement urgent rescue according to his plan.
After more than three hours of emergency rescue, everyone was exhausted, but the results were quite good. The snow leopard's various indicators were relatively stable. As long as no complications arose postoperatively, there was a chance for better solutions to the fracture issue.
Once the surgery was completed, there was no need for so many people to guard the site any longer.
Rescue personnel and surgical veterinarians gradually left, leaving behind one Kazakh support staff, one animal nurse each from China and Russia, plus Chen Ying and Kelas.
They would stay there for a week, until the snow leopard's condition stabilized, before transporting it out.
Chen Ying, as a professional veterinarian, had a certain degree of decision-making power in the subsequent treatments.
Fortunately, this female leopard was also truly resilient; three days post-surgery, she had regained some energy, eagerly chewing and swallowing the food held to her mouth.
"Good girl, you're so impressive." The animal nurse from the Russian side praised the snow leopard while feeding it, invoking some embarrassment among those nearby.
Chen Ying was adapting well and was quite good at supporting, and under their cooperation, the female leopard's mental state was gradually improving.
"Recovery is going well, we can notify the outside to send people to pick her up." After conducting a full-body check on the snow leopard, Chen Ying smiled, "Didn't we suspect last time that the juvenile snow leopard rescued by your side might be her cub? Perhaps this time we can reunite the mother and child."
Before conducting genetic testing, the relationship between the two couldn't be confirmed, because the places of rescue were different, and the young snow leopard was sent to a medical place further north than here.
The rescue site for the young snow leopard was a clinic specifically for saving snow leopards, lynxes, and other mid-sized and large felines, and this female snow leopard would likely be arranged to be sent there for further treatment.
The Chinese side was not withdrawing from efforts, but they were so busy this year that there was no staff available to handle this matter. Moreover, the snow leopard's usual activity areas were between the Russian and Kazakh sides, leading the Chinese side to choose a supportive role after deliberation.
As a student preparing to enroll in school, Chen Ying couldn't stay to undertake long-term treatment duties.
After coordinating the rescue work for the snow leopard with the clinic's side, Chen Ying and Kelas returned to Aleksey's small farm.
