Fate/Gil-kun's Great Adventure

Chapter 42: Gil-kun and the Snow Queen

"Wait, Goldie! We don't have to fight her!"

"You misunderstand the situation. I WANT to fight her."

"That's a stupid idea and you know it."

"Only if I lose."

"No, it's stupid regardless."

"Another one."

"Huh?"

"There's another Heroic Spirit coming this way. I suggest you and Salter go and intercept him."

"Wouldn't it be better to fight a 3v2 battle, so that we can all count on a numbers' advantage?"

"If those two Servants were to unleash their power at the same time in the same place, the fight would become tricky enough to transform into a waste of time. And I don't need to waste time. I only need to blow off some steam."

"I'd argue we're already wasting time here..."

"Just go!"

"Ok, fine! But I'll consider this a favour that you owe me!"

"Do I really need to go too?"

"I don't need nor desire any assistance."

"Urgh, what a drag... I'm hungry. If you don't end this quick, I'll kill her myself once I return."

"Try to keep up with me, Salter."

"You'll see."

The two swordswomen disappeared in the nearby forest as the two remaining Servants circled around each other and looked at their opponent, ready to strike at any point.

"Are you sure you don't need their help?"

"I'm surprised you let them go. Are you not concerned for your partner's safety?"

"Gramps won't lose to petty and frivolous people like you. And neither will I."

"You sure like to talk a lot of nonsense. That's fine. When I'm done here, I'll make sure you'll never be able to insult me ever again. However, to go all out against you would be rid-"

Gilgamesh was cut off by a distortion in the ice that took the form of a spike and tried to impale him through the heart. However, he dodged it without any problem, only for an ice wedge-like projectile to be thrown at his face. He leaped into the air, where the air began solidifying and twisting around until it created a small tornado around him that suddenly transformed into a huge ice pillar.

The Snow Queen turned around and started walking away.

"People like you will never be able to defeat me. You talk a great deal of your full power, but that power is useless if you don't use it when the time calls for it. Who cares if your full power could destroy me? In the end, it amounted to not-"

"As much as I am being merciful, my patience does have its limits. And your insolence is testing them a bit too much for your own good, mongrel."

Surprise invaded her face as the King of Heroes appeared once more in front of her, having broken out of his newly made cage.

"How did you-"

"I told you, didn't I? Your ice can't freeze my brilliance."

"Don't get too cocky, that wasn't the full extent of my power."

"If I wanted to, I could know the extent of your power better than yourself."

Gilgamesh belittled the rebel as he readied his Gate of Babylon and sent several weapons toward her. A barrier of ice spikes surrounded the Snow Queen, blocking all attacks. They then broke into a million of shards that exploded forward.

Gilgamesh simply sank through a portal and appeared on the opposite side, ready to hit his enemy once more. Before he could manifest more weapons, however, his portals froze in place.

"?"

"What's the matter? Your brilliance can't escape my ice?"

"I see. This must be your Noble Phantasm."

"No. This is merely an application of my Territory Creation skill. You are currently in my domain, and in my domain, I can trap everything, even something as ethereal as your own Noble Phantasm."

The King of Heroes could hardly believe the fact that another Servant had the power to shut down his treasury without even utilising a Noble Phantasm, so much so that he used his eyes to verify whether what had been said was the truth or not.

"I commend you. For a mongrel like you, that is impressive. I have confronted many opponents in the time of the greatest heroes who were capable of manipulating ice, but you're probably the strongest yet."

"I accept this compliment, but you shouldn't be too surprised. In fact, there's a Servant in this world who makes my magic look like child's play. He's responsible for the creation of the great polar continent in the North and a current Grand Servant."

"I wasn't done talking. I have one question for you: do you think you'll be fast enough to freeze all my portals before they strike you?"

Without waiting for an answer, Gilgamesh started producing more golden glows all around him, in the sky, on the ground, behind him, behind his enemy, in front of him...

Every time one of them appeared, it immediately froze solid, giving no time for the greatest hero to attack. A wall of portals appeared right in front of the Snow Queen, temporarily blinding her. Although she was able to destroy them before they could fire, the King of Heroes appeared behind her, holding a weapon in his hands, and attempted to stab her.

A fortress of ice surrounded Gilgamesh, getting increasingly smaller and smaller. Before he could be crushed, he jumped up with his fists high, shattering his cold prison. As soon as he was out, however, a barrage of ice spikes flew against him, but his armour, the finest ever crafted, held strong and didn't shatter.

Gilgamesh regained his footing on the ground, mildly annoyed by the failure of his surprise attack.

"I didn't think you would actually try to hit me directly, golden king."

"I didn't think so either. But the longer I take to defeat a mongrel like you, the more my honour is hurt."

"Your honour or your pride?"

"Does it really make a difference?"

"I guess not. Sorry to disappoint, but at this rate, it's only a matter of time before I manage to overwhelm you and freeze you still. My control over this entire area is nearly absolute. This is not a war of attrition you can win."

"Don't get too cocky, mongrel. Regarding attrition, there's only one who can rival me. Though I'll grace you with this praise: what you say is true... provided I don't take the battle too seriously. And unfortunately for you, I'm on the verge of doing exactly that."

Meanwhile, in the woods nearby...

"Are we sure we're going in the right direction?"

"We're running in a straight line."

"How does Goldie even know that someone is here?"

"How does he have so much stuff and such incredible luck?"

"Does he have good luck?"

"He literally keeps finding people who coincidentally either saw his Saber or know where she is. Not to mention someone threw a spear that reverses causality against him and missed."

"Well, when you put it like that... though I am a bit worried."

"Huh? We're going to fight this guy together. Unless he's on par with Galter, I doubt he'll pose much of a problem."

"Goldie said that if this Servant and the one he's fighting were to combine their powers, they would prove troublesome."

"And?"

"Have we ever encountered something that the King of Heroes found troublesome?"

"You sure care a lot about what Galter thinks."

"W-What's that supposed to mean?!"

"I'll let you figure it out on your own."

"Damn you, Salty!"

"Excuse me, ladies, may I ask what you are doing here?"

"We're searching for the Servant that's in this forest."

"Oh, I see. I'll let you know when I see him."

"Thank you very much, Gramps! ... wait a second... YOU are the Servant in the forest!"

"Wow, look at Detective Nero over here..."

"I suppose I am the one you are looking for. I have one simple request: leave this place and take your friend over there with you, pretty please."

"I'm afraid we can't do that."

"He did ask pretty please, though."

"I find the prospect of Galter complaining and whining much more dreadful than whatever you can throw at us."

"Oh, give it a rest. Do you really want to waste time like this, even though time is money?"

"No, I don't want to waste time. That's why I'm killing you now."

And with one swift strike, Salter beheaded the old man, his head falling on the ground, bouncing and rolling until it reached Nero's feet.

"That was uncalled for!"

"Better him than us."

"You're not very good at arguing your case, you know that?"

"I don't have the will nor the time to do that."

"You don't have to be so hasty. Time keeps flowing, but he isn't a thief. But just like money, you have to spend it well."

"?"

The head talked, as from the exposed neck grains of sand started flowing like blood, until they reached the severed part. They abruptly pulled it back, making the old man one again.

"Freaky!"

"What an annoying trick. Are you a relative of a certain green knight, perhaps?"

"I am the one that never stops. And the one who catches up to everyone. And the one who heals all wounds. I'm-"

"Are you Saturn? I promise you that during my reign, I organised some of the best Saturnalia ever!"

"Hahaha... you could say I'm him, but also not... something that outlived the concept of 'god'... and something younger than the newest newborn... condensed and, well, for the lack of a better word, dumbed down so that human minds could comprehend my nature... I'm Father Time."

The old man smiled as he spread open his wings.

"See? Told you."

"Shit."
