Chapter 297 – Battle With A Dragon
Just as their victory was assured, the dragon's roars turned their victory into defeat. Back on Gethys, the sorceresses had their dragon keep to protect them, but now they had nothing. The cultists who were retreating stopped and cheered. It was clear that it was their dragon.
How had they allied with a dragon? Meera wondered. Or did they bring one from Gethys?
The dragon's shadow blotted out the sun. Meera squinted and zoomed in with her advanced eyes to see the sun glinting through the dragon.
How can that be?
Then the dragon dived and Meera got a good look at it. The thing wasn't even close to the largest dragon she had seen, but it was just as terrifying as the rest. It was about thirty feet from head to tail, and its wing span was about just as wide. The most confounding thing of all, it seemed to be made of ice, with eyes that glinted with an ethereal blue light, like two sapphires burning with blue flames.
"Your end is here!" roared one of the cultists, waving his hands in the air, and his friends followed suit.
The next moment, he found a chakram in his face. He fell as Meera recalled her chakram. That silenced the cultists' hollering.
Then she rose in the air and found Duinith. "Hold the line. I'll see about this dragon. If it lands here, our little campaign is done."
The woman contemplated for a moment, and Meera thought she looked like she was going to protest. In the end, she gave a simple nod. "Do what you can do."
Meera blasted off into the air to meet the dragon, and she could swear she saw relief flooding the faces of many sorceresses. Regardless, she wasn't doing it for them. She was doing it for herself. After all, this dragon was bound to have some good skills and give her lots of experience.
[Glacier Dragon – Level 781]
There was a time when the thing's level would scare her, but now it excited her. But she remembered what had happened the last time she fought a creature of such a high level. The Basilisk nearly killed her. If it weren't for Dara, she would've been done for. There was no Dara here, and she doubted anyone down below would bother saving her if it came to it.
So, she wasn't going to take it easy this time.
Her prey really was a dragon that was made entirely of ice. Could it be the same dragon that she had seen the man create when she was going around planting her mirrors in the Mantle to spy on the cultists?
She had no time to ponder on that as the dragon noticed her coming and adjusted its flight to meet her.
She put a Death Mark on it. A skull appeared on its massive head and seeped into its icy body. That skull would ensure that any skills that she threw at it would do a considerable amount of damage. If she knew the Hierarch's creatures, she was sure that this one would also have a trick up its sleeve like the Glacidrak or the immortal giant.
Then she activated Bastian's Strength, which would ensure that any damage that she took would stockpile inside her, and she could throw all that back at the dragon in one devastating move. This skill was needed since she wouldn't be able to use Mirror Step to dodge in the air.
The dragon opened its mouth, let loose an ear-deafening roar, and shot an ice beam at her. She put up a Mirror Tower Shield and rolled to the side. The shield was a distraction. She knew the dragon's attack would blast through it, and it did.
While the dragon was busy with the shield, she thrust her hand out and shot the dragon's wings with Mirror Shard Fury. The ice cracked lightly where her jagged mirror shards pierced the icy wings. Its ice beam stopped abruptly when it noticed the shards in its wings.
Meera was hoping that her shards would crash through the wings, but they didn't, and that was okay. She had something else to bring this hurtling to the ground.
Meera smirked when the dragon's eyes met hers, and there was almost an intelligence behind that could tell what was coming next. It frantically shook its wings trying to shake off the mirror shards, but it was too late.
She snapped her fingers and activated Mirror's Wrath.
The shards exploded in a brilliant explosion of light against the sky. But then it was Meera's turn to be surprised, as when the light subsided, the dragon was still in the air. There was hardly any damage to its wings at all.
The dragon stared at her in defiance.
How can this be?
The dragon's eyes seemed to laugh at Meera's predicament. She knew she was projecting her own feelings onto it, but the way they looked at her, there was an intelligence behind it. She was sure of it.
The dragon snapped his wings together and sent her hurtling through the air, as a massive gust of wind slammed into her. It took her a minute to stop herself. She righted herself and saw that the dragon was nearly on her, but thanks to its positioning, something stood out.

She looked the thing up and down, and she knew how the dragon had weathered one of her strongest skills. Inside its chest was a block of white ice that must've been its heart, and on this block was carved a rune in the same language as the wall.
Meera was stunned in place, while it looked like the dragon was laughing at her. She didn't know how to defeat this creature if she couldn't damage it. She had planned to distract the thing away and whittle it down with her skills, but now, she wasn't so sure.
The dragon seemed to laugh in her despair, as if to goad her into attacking.
Before it could make a move, Meera used a Quaking Fist with a considerable amount of Mana. The air rippled with vibrations as her attack smashed against the ice dragon. It was blasted back and rolled head over tail, flapping its wings trying to right itself. As it did, Meera noticed something curious.
Its wings, limbs, and even the tail, basically any parts of its body that were away from the heart, cracked and even chipped away slightly before repairing themselves. It was quick, but the damage was there. If she didn't have Mirrorbound Sight, then she would never have been able to see it.
This meant that the dragon wasn't completely impervious to damage, and a plan began to form in her head once again, albeit a dangerous one, but one that just might work.
The dragon stopped spinning and came for her. Meera readied herself, and once it was close enough, she used Nightstalker Bindings, but the dragon swiftly dodged to the right. She had just recalled the dark chains that the dragon tried to slash her with its massive claws.
She ducked the first slash and then caught the second clawed hand using Druvis Might. The clash sent reverberations through the air, as a loud boom sounded. Down below, both the sorceresses and cultists had stopped fighting to watch her fight with the dragon. In a way, it was good. The sorceresses will know that she was not to be messed with, and her fear will home in the hearts of the cultists, but all this hinged upon whether she could take the dragon down. If she couldn't, then she would just become a laughing stock.
She punched the dragon's claw away and slammed her shoulder into its torso, driving the dragon back. It tried to claw at her back, but she raised three Mirror Tower Shields to protect her. Then she drew a deep breath and activated Shadowflame Devastation.
Dark flames erupted from her mouth and washed over the dragon's chest. Exactly in the spot above the dragon's heart with the runes. It's source of protection. The dragon cried out and flailed as if it was in pain, which made her frown, but it was a sign that what she wanted to do was working.
Then, thick ice shards exploded out of the dragon.
Since Meera was hugging the thing, she got the full brunt of the blow. The front half of her body was riddled with ice shards as big as her hands. Her armor saved her life. It prevented them from going too deep, but the same couldn't be said about her face. She lost an eye, and there were more than a couple that went through her neck. It was safe to say that she wouldn't be of this world if she didn't start healing herself soon.
Before she could activate Greater Vitalize, the dragon smashed its icy wing into her and sent her hurtling towards the ground. She tried to stop herself, but she was going so fast that by the time she slowed herself down, she had smashed into a hut, and by God, did it hurt.
A cheer went up, most likely from the cultists. Given how much the sorceresses hated her, it could very well be the sorceresses. She didn't move from where she was and lay there groaning as her body stitched itself back together, thanks to her healing skill.
There was a loud crack as her arm twisted back into place. She was sure she must've broken a few limbs. Then one by one, the ice shards plopped out of her body, and the wounds closed slowly, followed by her eye reforming. The whole process was taking too long, so she took out a Health potion and chugged that down, which quickly closed all the superficial wounds. And just like that, she was as good as new.
"Take cover!" a woman screamed.
Meera blasted out of the hut, trailing splinters and dust in her wake.
The dragon had unleashed a massive ice beam at the sorceresses. They were cowering under a barrier that no doubt Kithra had made, but it didn't look like it would hold.
Meera flew full speed towards the dragon and used Druvis Might to punch its jaw shut. The dragon reeled back from the force of the blow, and the whole world was left silent at Meera's miraculous return. The cultists and sorceresses stared wide-eyed at how she was here, and unharmed.
"Now, dragon, it's my turn," she said. She pointed at the dragon and activated Corrupting Hex, in combination with her Bastion's Strength.
The dragon didn't show any outward sign of hurt, but it soon would.
It turned to glare at Meer with hateful eyes. Then held up a clawed hand and formed a massive javelin, only to cry out in pain. Its hand cracked to the point that it smashed to bits. Then the dragon made its second mistake—it tried to heal itself. This time, it screamed, and cracks formed on its chest.
Meera smiled as she knew she had him. Corrupting Hex, in conjunction with Bastian Strength, which was powered by all the damage that had just been done to Meera, was wreaking havoc on the unkillable dragon. Meera would have to do nothing, and it would die on its own.
Though she didn't just want to kill it, she wanted something precious from it.
"What happened? Not going to attack any longer?" Meera shrugged. "Okay, I might as well do it then."
Using Mirror Bolt, she hurled four chakrams at the monster's wings. They hit the four corners just as she wanted. They didn't embed themselves deep enough to do real damage, and they weren't meant to. She used Mirror Bolt and pushed the dragon forward. It tried to flap its wings, but Meera's magic was stronger, and it was restricted. But still, it must've tried to do something as another ear-piercing shriek escaped the dragon's mouth, along with cracks along its icy chest going deeper.
Meera capitalized on its pained state and dashed off to it, gripped it by the jaw, and, using the chakrams, slammed it into the town square, right between the two opposing forces that jumped back in shock.
Six more chakrams shot out from her back and pinned down the dragon's limbs to stop it from moving for its emergency surgery.
Meera's armor receded to show her Hoard Belt. She reached in and took out her ultimate weapon—the level 3 chakram. The shining chakram had a light of its own. It was like she held a disc made of bright starlight.
Just about everyone's jaw dropped—even the dragon, stilled upon seeing the bright chakram.
Meera had only a few minutes at best before the chakram drank her Mana dry. She didn't have a lot remaining anyway after using Corrupting Hex. The skill had taken a massive chunk of it. She landed on the dragon at full speed and, without a moment's hesitation, started cutting.
The dragon cried out as chunks of ice fell away from its chest. It tried to shoot her with another ice beam, but as soon as the blueish-white light emanated from its mouth, Corrupting Hex struck again. The heat radiating from the chakram was melting the beast. She knew the chakram was warm to the touch, but didn't know it could do this. She wasn't complaining, of course. It took her less than half a minute to get to the heart.
She activated Druvis Might and ripped out the dragon's heart.
She had thought the dragon would die immediately, but it didn't. It looked up at her, and she couldn't be sure, but it looked like it had smiled at her. Then it melted away into a puddle of water.
Meera looked to the cultists. "Now would be the time to run."
