Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Betrayal
[3rd POV]
The power was overwhelming, even stronger than Kyouya.
Although the two had begun expanding their territory after teaming up to face the gods, Kyouya was clearly not the type of king with a desire for conquest.
Initially, Ur was just a small city with a population far smaller than Gilgamesh's.
However, now that the arm is acting as a conduit, Gilgamesh can feel the will of both of their people.
This power was naturally stronger than Kyouya's.
Gilgamesh used Ea as a blunt weapon, but unfortunately, he didn't have the "Absolute Counter" skill.
Otherwise, Anu's skull would have been shattered.
Even so, Gilgamesh still managed to send Anu flying with a single strike of his sword.
"How's my arm treating you?"
"Hmph, it's barely usable."
Gilgamesh said stubbornly.
After all, this arm was practically a receiver of the people's fate, and with it, Gilgamesh's strength multiplied.
He now had enough power to stop everything.
However...
"Gods are hard to kill. Even with your strength, those immortals are a headache, right?"
"Killing a few isn't difficult, but since you've already planned this, you should have said so sooner."
Even as they were talking, Gilgamesh continued firing his treasures.
Although he had prepared himself for it, watching every treasure explode before his eyes still caused him pain and made his hands tremble.
"First, let's severely injure them."
With Gilgamesh's power of dividing the people's fate, Kyouya's strength was greatly reduced.
However, he could still use his strength for hit-and-run tactics to distract while the King's Treasure continued shooting, and with the restraints from the Chains of Heaven, most of the gods were soon immobilized.
Suddenly...
"Behold Ea."
Ea appeared in Gilgamesh's hand.
With the King's Treasure supplying it with an immense flow of magical energy, this divine sword began to unleash its true strength.
The Ea's power spread completely, and it was no longer just a sword but a massive orb swirling.
As Gilgamesh channeled his magical energy into them, the "orb" began to rotate in opposing directions, and soon... space itself was torn apart.
This was no power of a human.
This was a powerful force that tore through the gods, like the swirling movement of a nebula.
The gods screamed in agony, and even Anu and the Gugalanna were heavily injured by the blow.
They couldn't have imagined Gilgamesh wielding such power.
No, this power had always been his.
This was the true strength of the Ea. It was merely that Gilgamesh's previous strength and state of mind weren't enough to fully unleash it.
"This is impossible, you actually... actually..."
Anu's voice trembled with disbelief.
That Gilgamesh could fully wield Ea was beyond comprehension.
If he had known this would happen, he would have waited until Gilgamesh grew old and died before making his move.
"This is impossible! You couldn't have endured for so long. Those who wield power cannot tolerate it slipping from their grasp, not even for a second. Even a second without it would be like suffering for a thousand years to you."
Kyouya mocked from the side, smirking with a trace of mockery in his tone.
The victory was now guaranteed.
The gods were absolutely no match, but the only problem was their immortality.
Gilgamesh would have a hard time killing them completely, even with Ea, and sealing them was impossible because there were too many.
The only option left was...
"I'm here."
A voice echoed in the ears of the gods, and they instantly felt as if they had been pardoned.
It was the voice of the Goddess of the Underworld, Ereshkigal.
That's right—if they could escape into the underworld with Ereshkigal's protection, even Gilgamesh wouldn't be able to destroy or seal them.
The gods understood that this was their sole chance at survival. Once Gilgamesh was gone, they could return to the surface of the earth.
The gates of the underworld creaked open, and even the heavily injured gods crawled in to seek Ereshkigal's protection.
"Ereshkigal, truly my worthy daughter."
Anu was overjoyed.
In the underworld, Ereshkigal's strength even surpassed his own. Once they entered, Gilgamesh wouldn't dare fight in enemy territory.
After they rested and recovered, they would reclaim everything that was rightfully theirs.
"As long as we can reach that place… as long as we can get there..."
It wasn't just Anu—and more gods, ignoring their wounds, made their way toward the underworld.
But as they entered and turned back to mock Gilgamesh and Kyouya, they were met with something unexpected.
A cunning smile, a mocking smile, a contemptuous smile... Why were they smiling?
"Damn it, Ereshkigal, you traitorous bastard!"
Anu reacted swiftly, but it was already too late, and cages appeared above them and trapped most of the gods.
The sudden betrayal left the gods utterly dumbfounded.
Why?
Why would the goddess of the underworld betray them?
"Anu, your mistakes were more than just underestimating us and greed. The greatest mistake you made was entrusting the Underworld to the kind-hearted Ereshkigal."
Kyouya looked at the desperate Anu, laying the cold truth before him.
Ereshkigal was one of the more isolated gods in the Mesopotamian pantheon, and the reason was her difference from the others.
She was a rare kind of god, one who had empathy for humans, one who loved them.
"I have heard the deeds of the gods countless times over these years. Unfortunately, my power exists only within the Underworld. Once I leave, I lose that power. So, when Shadow gave me this opportunity, Father, please return the power to humanity."
Ereshkigal, who had spent years alone in the underworld, only surrounded by ghosts, knew very well what foolish things the gods had done over the years.
She wanted to change things but had no power to do so.
Now, this was the perfect opportunity—to seal the gods in the Underworld, return the Earth to humanity, and allow them to step into the future guided by their own hands.
Whether that future would be one of prosperity or destruction was for humanity to decide.
"Anu, do you want to save your own dignity, or should this king help you with that?"
Gilgamesh raised the Ea in his hand. As long as Anu dared to leave the Underworld, there would be no good outcome for him.
"Father, descend into the Underworld."
The iron cage descended, trapping Anu inside as Ereshkigal dragged him into the Underworld to join the gods in their resurrection game.
As for the outcome of that game…
By then, humanity would have its own future, and she would have done her best to preserve the integrity of her pantheon as possible.
Even if she was branded a traitor, so what?
In the Underworld, she was invincible.
The gates of the Underworld closed with Anu's resentful gaze, leaving only Gilgamesh and Kyouya behind.
It was time to settle matters between the two of them.
An era cannot have two kings.
How tragic.
