Fairy Tale: With Sin Of Pride

Chapter 16: 008.1

The treatment of heroes and nobles varied based on their strength and status.

For those of average strength, whether they were nobles or heroes, they would usually only be served by family servants or female slaves.

However, for powerful nobles and heroes, the ones sent to serve them would be the family's concubines or even their children.

Concubines and children of noble birth, having received a high level of education and training in pleasing men, could more effectively demonstrate the host family's respect for their guest. The guest would naturally feel satisfied.

If the guest's strength and status far surpassed that of the host, it wasn't unheard of for even the family's primary wife or eldest daughter to personally prepare themselves to serve the distinguished guest.

If the servant's status was deemed too low, the guest might even feel insulted by the offer.

Of course, even if the guest did father a child during their stay, the offspring would have no relationship with them. Instead, the host family would raise the child as their heir, possibly even granting them the family name and inheritance.

To a modern person's perspective, this might seem utterly outrageous. But this was a feudal society where the institution of slavery still existed.

The more primitive the society, the more distorted its morals and ethics became. This world had its own set of values concerning honor and shame, which, when seen through the lens of the future, might seem downright appalling.

However, for people of this era, these practices were considered completely normal.

Letting one's concubines serve a guest had been a common occurrence as far back as the Warring States period. In this world, the only difference was that these customs were followed with even less restraint.

Rod sighed and politely declined the merchant leader's offer.

He had no habit of leaving his seed wherever he went, let alone allowing any child of his to call someone else "father."

Of course, if the woman were beautiful enough, he wouldn't mind a friendly exchange. But as for this mother-daughter pair, they clearly didn't qualify as exceptional.

The merchant leader, visibly disappointed by the rejection, didn't press the matter. He understood that powerful adventurers like Rod, whose ancestors might have been high-ranking nobles, could easily look down on someone of his humble status. It was no surprise that Rod had no interest in leaving behind an heir.

Still, it was a shame. He had lost a valuable opportunity to improve his family's bloodline.

"Adventurer, we've arrived at Mushroom Town!" came the merchant leader's voice from outside the carriage.

The once silent surroundings were gradually becoming filled with the noise of activity.
