Chapter 40: The Edge
A ball of flames landed on the platform, causing an explosion that sent shockwaves and intense winds in all directions.
A few meters away, Trey and the miner braced themselves behind their remaining shield tubes. As the explosion reached them, their barriers cracked before shattering into bursts of glowing particles.
Trey hurriedly activated his shield, with Bach standing behind him.
"Take this. Use it the moment my shield breaks—I'll stand behind you!" Trey shouted, handing another shield tube to the miner.
Bach nodded, his face serious, cold sweat forming on his forehead. He gripped the shield tube tightly as another explosion erupted. This time, three balls of flame crashed down around them.
Some unfortunate Primers were caught off guard, having just dealt with the previous fireball when another landed on them. They were thrown off the platform, their bodies vanishing into the shattered, mirror-like spaces. Their grotesque, painful screams disappeared as quickly as they came.
Trey gritted his teeth as the explosions nearly knocked him off balance. His shield, the only thing protecting them, was cracking faster than before.
"Old man! Use the shield now!" he shouted, glancing back in worry.
As his words fell, the shield shattered, and the miner activated the shield tube just in time.
A translucent blue barrier materialized, shielding them from the shockwaves.
"Good job, old man!" Trey praised, breathing heavily, his arms aching from the impact of the fireballs. The new shield gave them a moment to catch their breath.
"They're still not done?" Bach asked.
"No, not yet," Trey replied, his gaze fixed on the ongoing battle.
The Ground Fire Hog had already suffered grave injuries, blood pouring from its many wounds, making its red fur an even deeper shade of crimson. It had lost a limb, its movements sluggish and strained. But despite its battered state, the monster refused to stop, relentlessly spewing balls of fire as if its energy were limitless—though its attacks were clearly weakening.
"It's already weak. It won't be long before they take it down," Trey said, a hint of relief in his voice.
"That's good, that's good. We just need to hold out a little longer," the miner sighed, still gripping the shield. "But why are the explosions happening more frequently over here?"
Bach's doubt made Trey curious as well. He narrowed his eyes at the battle, and what he saw made his blood boil.
The New One's group was the main reason why the Ground Fire Hog was severely injured. Their firepower was immense, more than enough to handle the Final Boss on their own. But besides being the ones inflicting the most damage, they were also the reason so many Primers were dying.
They weren't just attacking the Ground Fire Hog—they were deliberately redirecting its fireballs toward the areas where the Primers were gathered. The New One's Half-Aegis user, wielding an expandable black box with extra storage space, was using his axe to bat fireballs toward the Primers. His teammates were also using their own methods to manipulate the Beyond Inferno, ensuring that the Primers suffered instead of them.
"Damn those guys!" Trey gritted his teeth in anger. However, even though he was filled with fury, there was nothing he could do but wait for the battle to end. He already knew why the Half-Aegis users were doing this—they didn't want more people gaining Contributions after the Final Boss was defeated. This would ensure that the New One group received the lion's share, though this outcome had been expected from the start.
But killing other Primers just to hoard all the Contributions for themselves? That was outright murder!
"This is frustrating," Trey muttered with a sigh. Inside a Fissure, there was no law—only the strong reigned supreme. Even though he was furious that they were on the verge of death because of these fireballs, all he could do was shut up and wait.
However, he could no longer stay idle. What he saw next made his eyes widen.
"Sh*t! Incoming!"
The axe-wielding New One had struck a forming fireball, sending it hurtling straight toward their position!
Bach noticed the attack as well. Using the arms he had strengthened through years of mining, he raised the shield. "Stay close!"
Trey pressed against the old man, their bodies already illuminated by the bright red glow of the incoming flames.
The next moment, an explosion erupted at their location, engulfing them in fire and smoke. But it lasted only a second before their bodies were sent flying through the air.
"Ahhh!" Trey screamed in fear, his burnt clothes and hair flapping wildly as he tumbled.
The miner, on the other hand, had already lost consciousness from the blast.
Trey caught a glimpse of Bach and then the place where they were going to land.
This is bad!
They were heading straight for the edge of the platform. If they skidded or rolled even a few feet after impact, they would fall to their deaths!
Trey gritted his teeth. "I have to stabilize my body!"
As the ground rushed toward him, he forced his body into a controlled position—one that would let him land and stop before he went over the edge. Under normal circumstances, this would have been impossible.
He hit the platform with a heavy thud, his body skidding and rolling across the surface. If he didn't stop himself now, he was dead.
Thinking fast, he yanked a knife from his belt and slammed it into the platform.
Sparks flew as the blade scraped against the surface. The sudden resistance slowed his momentum, but it wasn't enough—his lower body was already hanging off the platform, gravity threatening to pull him into the fractured space below.
But he couldn't rest yet.
He still had to save the miner, who had just landed in front of him.
Bach bounced off the platform, his unconscious body sailing over Trey.
Time seemed to slow as Trey reached out, his fingers brushing against the old man's shirt. But his grip slipped.
"F*ck!" Trey roared, letting go of the knife to extend his reach. "Gotcha!"
His left hand grabbed Bach's wrist just as his right latched onto the platform's edge. Below them, his knife tumbled off the stage, vanishing into one of the broken spaces.
"Old man, wake up!" Trey shouted, his arm burning from the strain. "Wake up! I need you to climb up!"
But even after multiple shouts, Bach Ponce remained unresponsive.
"Sh*t! Wake up!"
