Euphony Trio: The Missing Piece

Chapter 10: The Missing Piece

The studio was quiet, the faint hum of the equipment the only sound that filled the space. It wasn't unusual for rehearsals to start like this, but today, the silence felt heavier, like a void had settled over the room. Zane was gone. The collaboration had ended, and just as quickly as he'd burst into their lives, he had returned to his solo path.

Sunny sat at the edge of the couch, her fingers fiddling with the hem of her orange scarf. Laura was at the piano, her hands resting lightly on the keys, though she didn't play. Axel leaned back in his chair, spinning a drumstick absentmindedly between his fingers. None of them spoke, but their thoughts seemed to echo in the emptiness left behind.

Finally, Laura broke the silence, her voice measured. "It feels different without him, doesn't it?"

Axel nodded, his dark blue eyes fixed on the drumstick in his hand. "Yeah. It's... quieter. Less chaotic." He smirked faintly, but there was no humor in it. "I kind of miss the chaos, though."

Sunny looked up, her golden eyes shimmering with a mix of emotions. "It's weird, right? Like, he wasn't here for that long... but it feels like..." She trailed off, her voice faltering.

Laura glanced over, her usual composed expression softening. "Like what?"

Sunny hesitated as she adjusted her orange cap. "Like we lost a part of our little..." She paused, searching for the right word. Finally, she looked up, her voice breaking slightly. "Family?"

The word hung in the air, and for a moment, none of them knew how to respond. Laura's gaze dropped to the piano keys, her fingers pressing down lightly to produce a soft, melancholic chord. Axel leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he studied Sunny.

"Yeah," Axel said softly. "I get what you mean."

Laura nodded, her hands still on the piano. "He did have a way of... leaving a mark. Even if he was only here for a short time."

Sunny smiled faintly, her eyes misty. "He brought something to us, didn't he? Like, this energy... this spark. It felt like we could do anything."

"Classic Zane," Axel said with a quiet chuckle. "Always the showman."

They sat in reflective silence for a moment, each of them lost in their own memories of Zane. The way he challenged Laura's structure with his fiery energy, the way he teased Axel while somehow grounding him, and the way he matched Sunny's light with his own unique brilliance.

"I think he needed us too," Laura said finally, her voice thoughtful. "Maybe not in the same way we needed him, but... we gave him something. A place to belong, even if it was temporary."

Sunny nodded, her smile growing a little stronger. "I hope he feels that. Wherever he is."

Axel stood, stretching and tossing his drumstick onto the table. "Well, I don't think this is goodbye forever. Knowing Zane, he'll find a way to crash back into our lives at some point. Probably with some dramatic entrance."

Sunny laughed, the sound breaking through the lingering tension. "Yeah. That does sound like him."

As the group began to settle into their rehearsal, the emptiness of the studio didn't feel quite so heavy anymore. Zane might have been gone, but his presence lingered, woven into the music, the laughter, and the bond they shared. Their family had grown, even if just for a moment, and the mark he left on them would never fade.
