Chapter 143: Proper Burial
A few minutes had gone by since Leonard began carrying a corpse to the open street.
Along the way, there were still many sounds of battle echoing from all across the city.
However, none of them had affected Leonard one bit. His eyes were focused only on the path ahead.
The action of carrying a corpse naturally attracted quite the attention, especially some of the berserk slaves who attempted to target him.
Unfortunately for them, they were swiftly dealt with by Mirelle, who showed no hesitation in killing with her full power.
She was at first only planning on guarding the perimeter, until Caroline promptly reminded her that she could be burned alongside Claudia. When Mirelle realized that part of Leonard's fury was directed at Claudia, she tried to help alleviate the situation by proving her worth.
'The Crown Prince didn't even bat an eyelid at the commotion.' It was just a pity that her action seemed to have been futile.
Leonard continued his walk at a steady pace. Not too fast and not too slow.
"The city is quite beautiful when you don't see the rottenness, Irene." He calmly muttered, showing Irene the beautiful scenery.
Although Velastra was corrupted and rotten to the core, one must admit that its scenery was only second to that of the capital.
Unfortunately, not all the areas they walked past were beautiful and colorful.
Some of them were laced with blood caused by the berserk slaves.
"HELP!"
Right at this moment, a cry for help echoed from a narrow alley. The person who cried for help was wearing a city guard's uniform, and they were currently confronting a berserk human slave.
The berserk human slave deflected the guard's weapon with ease as they continued to advance, their bloodlust intensified.
The guard's face was filled with panic, and they thought their life was gone until they noticed Leonard's group.
Even though they were out in the open, this particular group remained unscathed, which meant they had some ability. Thus, the guard quickly cried for assistance to resolve their predicament.
Their strength was fading rapidly, whereas Leonard remained expressionless.
He heard the cry, but he showed no intention of lending help.
As for Mirelle, she wanted to go and help them out, only to be halted by Caroline.
Mirelle was bewildered by her friend's action and used her eyes alone to question why she was stopping her.
"You've failed to defend him properly and allowed the assassin to have a chance of attack because of your previous impulsive action that masks their sound. If you continue to be impulsive and try to act like a hero, you will only increase his fury." Caroline warned softly.
She didn't care about Claudia's plight, but Mirelle was different. She didn't want to watch herself being seriously implicated because of her impulsive action.
As of this moment, any mistake, even if it was a very trivial one, could become a fatal danger to them.
The more Leonard remained silent, the greater the fury he was concealing. Some people who were furious often loved to express themselves openly.
This was the type you didn't need to pay much attention to.
After all, they had already vented it all out, and once the time passed, their steams would gradually dwindle.
But those who were furious yet didn't express anything on the surface. Now that was when things just got serious—to the point where you must tread very carefully in your actions and speech.
Right now, Leonard was like a boiling pot with no steam.
It appeared safe and calming, but the moment you placed your hand to touch it a little, you would face a third-degree burn.
Once Mirelle realized this concept, she gave one final look at the struggling city guard before turning away. One could say that today's consequences were also due to the guards' negligence and refusal to enforce any of the city's laws.
When the guard came to realize that his cry for help was ignored, their face turned ghastly pale.
They didn't even get a chance to curse at them when the berserk human slave took advantage of its moment of distraction. They managed to latch onto them and began draining their blood to the fullest.
"ARGHH!" The city guard shrieked in agony, their hands and legs squirming around, trying to push the berserk human slave away.
Unfortunately, their strength was fading rapidly, and soon, the colors of their eyes turned dull and lifeless. Their body also dried up in the blink of an eye, having lost all the blood contained inside them.
Even till death, their expression still expressed unwillingness and confusion.
They couldn't understand why his call for help was ignored.
While they held an aggrieved death, Leonard's group arrived at a luxury garden. The flowers were blooming, and the fountain water was spraying in a beautiful light.
This place was called the Fragrant Garden, having collected and planted numerous types of luxury flowers.
"Master, the soil here is suitable." Shirley suddenly called out and pointed at a certain area.
Leonard's brows were raised as he turned his attention to the area she pointed out.
A few seconds later, he nodded and carried Irene over to the place. Many colorful flowers were grown nearby, which made it a very suitable burial place for Irene.
Shirley was quick on her feet and readily used some of her mana to dig out the soil.
Impressed by her work, Leonard gently placed Irene down on the soil. Her eyes were closed, and she appeared to be at peace.
Just when Shirley was about to cover Irene with the soil that was dug out, a voice suddenly echoed.
"How dare you people intrude in this garden and blaspheme its sacredness!" An elderly man appeared from afar and scolded harshly.
"This garden was protected by many formations, so how did you all arrive here? Don't you know your action could easily invite those berserk slaves over here? Can you bear the consequences if the flowers here were to be damaged?" They questioned, their eyes subtly gazing at the entrance, wondering if the barrier had been breached.
