Emotion Hunter: System Awakening.

Chapter 39: Ghosts of New Eden

[Elena's POV]

The twisted remains of Harmony Elementary School were the first landmark Elena recognized.

What had once been a cheerful brick building with colorful murals was now a crystalline structure that bent reality around itself, its playground equipment fused into impossible geometric shapes that hurt to look at directly.

Elena's breath caught in her throat as memories flooded back.

I was seven years old, racing across that same playground during recess. Mrs. Patterson reading story time under the oak tree that was now a twisted spire of frozen space-time.

"You alright?" Riven asked quietly, noticing her sudden stillness.

"I know this place," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible. "This used to be... this was my home."

"wow, really.... A-am so sorry" Riven realized his blunder immediately apologized.

"No need to apologize... It's already in the past anyways..." she said looking slightly sad... But with a smile.

The scout ahead of them.... a lean man who'd introduced himself as Gordon... glanced back with interest.

"You're from New Eden?" Scout Gordon asked. ".... Before the Cascade Event?"

New Eden.

That's what they called it then. Elena almost laughed at the bitter irony of the name.

"Yeah," she managed. "Born and raised here ."

Riven didn't say anything... But was just looking on... Like he's in a daze and lost in thoughts.

They continued walking, and each step brought more ghosts of the town's former self.

The community center where she'd attended dance classes, now it's a writhing mass of organic architecture that pulsed with its own heartbeat.

The park where she'd had her first kiss, was now transformed into a crystalline forest where light moved in ways that defied physics.

And everywhere, the absence of the three thousand people who had once called this place home.

Most of them died in the first wave, Elena remembered from Guild intelligence reports she'd overheard during her captivity. When the dimensional cascade started, the evacuation orders came too late. By the time Hunter teams arrived, the survivors numbered in the dozens.

"The settlement's just ahead," Scout Gordon announced, gesturing toward what had once been the town square.

Elena could see it now... a complex of interconnected buildings, some salvaged from the original structures, others built from scavenged materials and dimensional-resistant alloys.

She could see improvised Guard towers rose ahead... Well it looks like a fenced gate with some people mounted on the it, and she could already see the guards patrolling around the fence.

Someone had built civilization from the ruins of her childhood.

As they approached the outer checkpoint, Elena felt her fire system stir for the first time since the Guild's memory extraction.

Not functional yet, but present..... like embers banking back to life.

Maybe being home helps, she thought.

"What's their names and origin point," the checkpoint guard requested, consulting a tablet that looked suspiciously high-tech for a post-apocalyptic settlement.

"Hers is Elena Vasquez, originally from New Eden. And Riven Duke, a Guild facility escapee," Scout Gordon reported efficiently.... Seems Elena and Riven explaining their circumstances helped sort unnecessary problems.

The guard made notes without much reaction. He did it Professional, and kinda distant.... the way people learned to be when survival depended on careful evaluation of strangers.

"Both of you will need to go through standard evaluation procedures," the guard said. "But Elena needs to go through the Medical procedure first, then security interview."

As they were escorted deeper into the settlement, Elena marveled at what the survivors had accomplished.

Solar panels and wind generators provided clean power.

Gardens grew in carefully tended soil that had been cleansed of dimensional contamination.

People moved with purpose and organization, not the desperate scrambling she'd expected.

"Impressive setup," Riven observed, his enhanced senses clearly picking up the settlement's defensive preparations.

"They've had years to build this," Gordon replied. "And they've learned from everyone who didn't make it."

They were separated at the administrative building.... a repurposed bank that now served as the settlement's command center.

"Don't worry, nothing will happen to you guys... No need to be nervous about the separation" Gordon said as he noticed how Riven was looking concerned.

"O-oh, well I don't really trust people nowadays" Riven replied with a nervous chuckle.

"We can trust them Riven" Elena reassured him.

"if you say so" he agreed with a grunt.

Elena was then taken to a medical evaluation room.... As Riven followed Gordon.

Elena met a middle aged woman... She wore glasses and a lab coat with kind eyes and competent hands began checking her vital signs.

"I'm Dr. Anna," the woman introduced herself. "I understand you've been through Guild custody recently?"

Elena nodded, suddenly exhausted by the prospect of explaining everything again.

"Memory extraction procedures?" Dr. Anna asked, noting Elena's hesitation and the telltale neurological markers.

"Among other things."

Dr. Kim's expression hardened with professional anger. "We've treated other Guild escapees. I'm familiar with their methods." She continued her examination with gentle efficiency. "Your nervous system shows signs of severe trauma, but you're healing remarkably well. How long since the extraction?"

"Three days."

"Three days?" Dr. Anna looked genuinely surprised. "Most subjects require weeks of recovery. You must have strong natural resistance."

Or maybe coming home helps.... I guess , Elena thought but didn't say.

The medical evaluation continued for another twenty minutes before Dr. Anna declared her stable but in need of continued rest and monitoring.

"Someone will be along shortly to discuss your situation," Dr. Anna said as she finished updating Elena's file. "In the meantime, try to get some rest. You're safe here."

Elena had just begun to relax when the door opened again.

The woman who entered commanded immediate attention despite her relatively small stature. Silver hair caught the room's lighting like polished metal, and amber eyes held an intensity that made Elena feel like she was being dissected by a particularly focused predator.

She wore what looked like a hybrid of tactical gear and ornate armor... functional but clearly crafted by someone who understood both protection and presence.

"Elena Vasquez," the woman said, her voice carrying absolute authority. "I'm Commander Vale. I understand you've returned to New Eden under difficult circumstances."

Elena struggled to sit up straighter, instinctively recognizing someone whose attention was both valuable and potentially dangerous.

"Yes, ma'am."

Commander Vale consulted a tablet, her amber eyes scanning what Elena assumed was her medical report and background information.

"Fire manipulation system??.... currently non-functional due to Guild interference," Vale read aloud. "Guild custody duration approximately four months. Memory extraction procedures confirmed." She looked up. "Tell me about your escape."

Elena recounted the events at the Guild facility, Riven's rescue attempt, their journey through the Scar Zone.

Commander Vale listened without interruption, occasionally making notes but mostly just absorbing information with the focus of someone who processed intelligence for a living.

"And your companion," Vale said when Elena finished. "Riven Duke. What's your assessment of his capabilities?"

Elena hesitated. She was grateful to Riven, respected his determination, but she also understood she was being evaluated based on her answers.

"He has an unusual system classification," she said carefully. "Emotion-based abilities. He's inexperienced and lacks formal combat training. And has a civilian background, but he have good instincts and strong protective drive."

Commander Vale made another note. "Is he Survivable with proper support?"

"I believe so, yes."

"Your system malfunction," Vale continued, changing topics with military efficiency. "Our medical staff believes it can be reversed with time and appropriate treatment. Your knowledge of Guild procedures could prove valuable."

Elena felt something unclenching in her chest. They wanted her. After months of being treated as an experimental subject, someone was offering her a place where she could contribute.

"What about Riven?" she asked.

Commander Vale's expression remained neutral. "Mr. Duke will be given provisional status while we assess whether he can contribute meaningfully to community security."

The message was clear: Elena was being considered for integration, but Riven would have to prove his worth.

"I'd like to help with his evaluation if possible," Elena said. "He risked his life to get me out of that facility."

For the first time, Commander Vale's amber eyes showed something that might have been approval.

"Well, loyalty has value," she said. "As does the ability to recognize obligation. Your system recovery begins tomorrow. We'll see how quickly you can return to operational status."

As Commander Vale prepared to leave, Elena found herself speaking without conscious decision.

"Commander? Thank you. For building this place. For giving people somewhere to go."

Vale paused at the door. "Everyone deserves the chance to rebuild after losing everything. Whether they succeed... that depends on them."

After the Commander left, Elena lay back on the medical bed and stared at the ceiling.

She was home.

Not the home she'd grown up in... that was gone forever... but a home built from its ashes by people who understood loss and chose to create something new instead of surrendering to despair.

Tomorrow she would begin recovering her fire abilities. Tomorrow she would start earning her place in this community. And hopefully, she could help Riven find his place here too.

But tonight, she was just Elena Vasquez, returned to New Eden, carrying the weight of everyone who hadn't made it this far.

Outside her window, the transformed landscape of her childhood caught the evening light, throwing rainbow reflections across the walls.

Different, but still somehow home.

And for now, that was enough.
