Chapter 10: Clever
My blood boiled, and rage coursed through my veins. I rushed to save Zuria, my sole objective in that moment. But why her? What could the witch possibly want with Zuria? These questions swirled in my mind as I charged towards my enemy.
" Why are you doing this?" Zuria asked the witch, her voice strained as she gasped for air. The witch's hand gently rested on Zuria's neck, and dark veins began to appear, slowly spreading down her body. "Forgive me, darling, but your existence is far too problematic for us," she whispered, her breath cold against Zuria's ear as she drained the life from her.
In that instant, I closed the distance between us and separated the two. I hurled a dagger at the witch and pulled Zuria to safety. Perhaps it was luck, but I finally landed a hit on her. The dagger pierced her lower abdomen, and the poison I had infused into it began to take effect.
"Are you okay?" I asked Zuria, cradling her in my arms as I laid her gently on the floor. She was weak, her body trembling from the witch's attack. I gave her a healing potion, hoping it would alleviate her pain. Though not as potent as healing magic, it was better than nothing.
No sooner had I laid her down than the witch emerged from my shadow once more. She stabbed me from behind with my own dagger. "Now we're both infused with poison," she said, her voice dripping with malice as she pulled the dagger from my shoulder.
My lungs and liver began to succumb to the poison, and I coughed up blood. But I refused to give in. Summoning my last ounce of strength, I burst into laughter, catching the witch off guard. Seizing the opportunity, I punched her.
Magic was no longer an option for me; physical attacks were my only hope. I unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks, knowing she couldn't defeat me in close combat. Though my advantage was short-lived, it was enough to create an opening.
The witch retaliated, binding me with shadowy hands. I was defenseless, my vision blurring. But just as all seemed lost, a brilliant light enveloped us. The witch recoiled, repelled by the radiance.
"Are you okay?" Zuria asked, her voice weak but concerned. Could it be? Was she a Light Bearer? With her help, I struggled to my feet. Finally, we had a chance to end this.
After a brief respite, the witch returned, her eyes fixed on Zuria with an unnerving intensity. "Why do you want me dead so much?" Zuria asked, her voice steady despite the fear lurking beneath.
"It's nothing personal," the witch replied, her tone devoid of emotion as she raised her hand to deliver the final blow.
In a flash, I created a barrier, trapping the witch inside with me. "Now!" I shouted, and a burst of light erupted from all directions. The witch stumbled, weakened. This was our chance to end her reign of terror.
