Eclipsed Radiance

Chapter 2: Training with Satoru

The following morning, Renji stood on a rocky plateau overlooking a vast, mist-covered forest. The air was crisp, the wind tugging lightly at the edges of his hoodie as he waited. He had been told to meet Gojo here at sunrise because Gojo would be out early morning for a mission, and though the sun had just begun to peek over the horizon, there was no sign of his new mentor.
"Typical," Renji muttered, his violet eyes narrowing slightly.
Just as the thought crossed his mind, a gust of wind kicked up behind him. In an instant, Gojo appeared, perched casually on a nearby boulder with his arms crossed behind his head. "Morning, kid. Ready to get your butt kicked?"
Renji turned to face him, his expression calm but resolute. "If that's what it takes."
Gojo hopped down from the boulder, landing lightly on his feet. "Good answer." He adjusted his glasses and gestured toward the forest below. "Alright, first lesson: cursed energy control. Show me what you've got."
Renji hesitated for a moment, then raised his hand. A faint, violet glow shimmered around his fingertips, the cursed energy crackling faintly as it coalesced into a small, jagged orb.
Gojo watched silently, his usual smirk absent as he scrutinized Renji's technique. "Not bad," he said after a moment, "but you're holding back."
Renji frowned slightly. "If I don't, it becomes unstable."
"Exactly," Gojo said, stepping closer. "Your power isn't like everyone else's—it's not supposed to be neat or predictable. The world around you already bends to your cursed energy, so trying to control it the same way others do is like trying to box in a storm."
Renji blinked, his violet eyes narrowing in thought. "So what am I supposed to do?"
Gojo grinned. "Let it flow."
With a flick of his wrist, Gojo summoned a faint shimmer of cursed energy around himself. It pulsed rhythmically, almost like a heartbeat, expanding and contracting in perfect harmony with his movements. "Cursed energy isn't just power—it's rhythm, instinct, and intent. Stop thinking about controlling it and start thinking about harmonizing with it."
Renji stared at him, the skepticism clear on his face. "That's easy for you to say. You've mastered your power. Mine still feels... wrong."
Gojo crouched slightly, bringing himself to eye level with Renji. "Look, kid, your power's not wrong—it's just different. And 'different' is exactly what makes it powerful. You've got to stop treating it like an enemy and start treating it like an extension of yourself."
Renji didn't respond immediately. Instead, he closed his eyes, letting Gojo's words sink in. Slowly, he raised his hand again, this time allowing the cursed energy to flow freely. The violet glow intensified, swirling chaotically around his fingers before expanding outward in jagged, unpredictable waves.
The ground beneath him trembled slightly, the air growing colder as the energy spread. For a moment, it seemed as though Renji might lose control—but then, something shifted. The chaotic waves began to ripple in rhythm, aligning with the steady beat of his pulse.
Gojo's grin widened. "Now we're talking."
Renji opened his eyes, the violet glow in his irises brighter than before. "It still feels unstable," he said, his voice steady but cautious.
"It's supposed to," Gojo replied, clapping him on the shoulder. "Power like yours isn't about stability—it's about adaptability. You're not here to follow the rules; you're here to rewrite them."
The rest of the morning was spent testing Renji's limits. Gojo pushed him relentlessly, forcing him to confront not just the raw strength of his cursed energy but the deeper instincts that drove it. By midday, Renji was drenched in sweat, his hoodie discarded on a nearby rock. But despite his exhaustion, there was a spark of determination in his eyes that hadn't been there before.
As they sat on the edge of the plateau, catching their breath, Gojo glanced at Renji with an almost uncharacteristic seriousness. "You've got potential, kid. But potential's useless if you don't know what to do with it."
Renji met his gaze, the weight of Gojo's words sinking in. "Then show me."
Gojo's grin returned, mischievous and full of promise. "Oh, I will. But fair warning—it's gonna hurt."

Renji smirked faintly, the first hint of humor breaking through his usually stoic exterior. "I'll survive."
----------
The rocky plateau stretched wide under an overcast sky, its uneven terrain scattered with jagged outcrops and loose boulders. The wind howled, carrying with it the faint scent of rain. Renji stood at the center, adjusting his glasses, his violet eyes sharp and unyielding. Opposite him, Gojo stood with his usual casual demeanor, hands in his pockets, his glasses masking whatever thoughts lay behind those eyes.
"You sure you want to do this here?" Gojo asked, his voice light but laced with mischief. "Plenty of places to fall, and I don't feel like babysitting."
Renji's jaw tightened. "If I can't handle a rocky field, how am I supposed to carry the weight of balance?"
Gojo tilted his head, his grin widening. "Alright, kid. Show me what you've got."
Renji wasted no time. He slammed his palm downward, activating Gravitational Pull. The loose rocks scattered across the plateau trembled before launching themselves toward Gojo in a chaotic barrage.
Gojo didn't flinch. He took a step forward, and the incoming debris froze mid-air, deflected by his infinity. The rocks tumbled harmlessly to the ground.
"Cute trick," Gojo remarked, brushing imaginary dust off his sleeve. "But you'll need more than that to scratch me."
Renji's expression didn't waver. With a quick gesture, he unleashed Repulsive Force, sending a shockwave across the plateau. Dust and stones erupted from the ground, rippling toward Gojo in a concentrated blast.
The blast collided with Gojo's barrier, the impact sending cracks through the rocky surface around him. He remained untouched, but his grin softened. "Not bad. You're learning how to use the terrain. But—"
In an instant, Gojo vanished.
Renji barely had time to react as Gojo reappeared behind him. A sharp flick to the back of his head sent him stumbling forward. "Rule number one," Gojo said, his tone teasing. "Never let your opponent get behind you."
Renji spun, releasing another Repulsive Force, but Gojo was already gone, standing casually atop a nearby rock formation. "You're wasting energy," Gojo called down. "Control, kid. Control."
Renji growled under his breath, focusing again. He activated Spatial Displacement, blinking onto a higher ledge for a better vantage point. From his elevated position, he gathered cursed energy into his palm, forming the unstable orb of Void Collapse.
Renji hurled the orb toward Gojo. The sphere careened across the plateau, distorting light and sound as it spiraled toward its target.
Gojo sidestepped with ease, but Renji was ready. He activated Gravitational Pull, redirecting the orb mid-air toward Gojo's new position.
Gojo paused, raising an eyebrow as the sphere closed in. "Huh. You're getting creative." With a flick of his wrist, he deflected the orb upward, where it detonated harmlessly in the sky. The explosion left a swirling void that pulled clouds and debris into its center before collapsing into nothingness.
The shockwave rattled the plateau, but Renji wasn't done. He lunged forward, releasing bursts of Attraction and Repulsion in quick succession to keep Gojo off balance. The forces tore at the rocky landscape, boulders shattering and cliffs crumbling under the strain.
But Gojo danced through the chaos effortlessly, his movements precise and unhurried. "You've got good instincts," he admitted, landing lightly on the ground a few meters away. "But raw power isn't enough. You need finesse."
Renji activated Temporal Barrier, slowing time around himself as he prepared for another attack. The air shimmered with distorted energy, but Gojo was already moving, his infinity barrier negating the slowed effects as he closed the distance.
Before Renji could react, Gojo's hand shot out, stopping just inches from his chest.
"That's enough," Gojo said, his voice calm but firm. "You've got potential, kid. But you're too reckless. If you're not careful, your own techniques will bury you faster than any opponent could."
Renji took a shaky step back, panting heavily. The plateau around them was in ruins—craters and cracks littered the ground, and the edges of the cliffs had crumbled into the abyss below.
"I'm supposed to carry balance," Renji said, his voice steady despite his exhaustion. "But how am I supposed to do that if I don't understand what it means to wield this power?"
Gojo studied him for a moment, his smirk softening. "Remember—balance isn't just about power. It's about knowing when not to use it."
Renji nodded, determination burning in his violet eyes. "Then teach me."
Gojo turned, starting down the rocky path toward the horizon. "We'll see if you're ready, kid. Don't make me regret this. For now I've gotta go somewhere. See ya!"
As Gojo turned to leave, Renji's voice broke the silence, halting him mid-step. "Wait."
Gojo glanced over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised. "What is it now, kid? Gonna ask me for fashion tips next?"
Renji ignored the jab, taking a moment to catch his breath. "You said balance isn't just about power—it's about knowing when not to use it. What does that mean for someone like you?"
Gojo's smirk faded, replaced by a contemplative expression. He turned fully, leaning against a nearby boulder, his hands still stuffed in his pockets. "You're asking the big questions already, huh? Alright, I'll bite."
"Here's the thing, Renji," Gojo began, his voice softer but still carrying that ever-present confidence. "When you're as strong as we are—me with the Six Eyes, you with your inverted version—there's this constant itch to prove yourself. To show the world why it should take you seriously."
Renji nodded, silently acknowledging the pressure he felt from his clan, from the very universe that seemed to have birthed him for a singular purpose.
"But power like ours isn't about proving anything," Gojo continued. "It's about responsibility. You've got to ask yourself, 'What happens when I act? What happens if I don't?' Every move you make shifts the scales, sometimes in ways you won't see until it's too late. That's what I mean by knowing when not to use it."
Renji frowned. "So... restraint?"
"Restraint, perspective, priorities—call it whatever you want," Gojo said with a shrug. "But yeah. There are times when holding back is the smartest thing you can do. Not every problem needs to be solved with raw power. Trust me, the universe doesn't need you flexing every time you sneeze."
Renji hesitated before asking his next question. "What about the isolation? People keep saying I'm supposed to bring balance, but no one really looks at me like I'm just... a person. They look at me like I'm a weapon to Jujutsu society. Heck, I already have cults that worship me. How do you deal with that?"
Gojo chuckled, but there was no humor in it. "Ah, the loneliness bit. That's the kicker, isn't it?" He crossed his arms, his expression turning uncharacteristically serious. "When you're the strongest—or in your case, when you're destined to fix the mess everyone else makes—it's easy to feel like you're on a pedestal. And pedestals? They're just fancy cages."
Renji looked at him, surprised at the honesty in his tone.
"Here's the thing, kid. You can either let that isolation define you, or you can use it. Don't get me wrong, it sucks. But it also means you've got freedom—freedom to carve out your own path. Just because people see you as some grand cosmic solution doesn't mean you have to let that be all you are."
"But what if the burden gets too heavy?" Renji asked. "What if I can't handle it on my own?"
Gojo's smile returned, softer this time. "You're not supposed to handle it alone. That's the mistake I made for a long time—thinking I had to carry everything myself because no one else could understand. Truth is, no one else will understand exactly what you're going through. But that doesn't mean they can't help."
He straightened, brushing the dust off his jacket. "Find your people, Renji. The ones who'll stick with you, even if they don't get the whole picture. They'll keep you grounded when the weight starts to feel unbearable. And when the time comes for you to fight alone, their support will remind you why you're fighting in the first place."
Renji fell silent, absorbing the words. The wind howled through the plateau, tugging at his hoodie. "I didn't expect you to be so... philosophical," he admitted.
Gojo grinned. "I contain multitudes, kid. But don't let it go to your head—I'm still way cooler than you'll ever be."
As Gojo turned to leave again, Renji called out one last time. "Satoru-sensei."
Gojo froze, caught off guard by the title. He glanced back, his smirk fading into something more genuine. "Yeah?"
"Thanks," Renji said simply. "For everything."
Gojo waved a hand dismissively, but there was a flicker of pride in his expression. "Don't thank me yet. Wait until I've actually made you stronger. Then we'll see if you still feel grateful."
He vanished in a blur of motion, leaving Renji alone on the battered plateau. The young sorcerer stood there for a moment longer, the wind carrying the weight of Gojo's lessons. For the first time, the weight on his shoulders didn't feel quite so heavy.
