Chapter 18: Home Nest
After a moment of waking up, you hear the sounds of a plane, so you look around in the sky, and see how a cargo plane is floating far away, leaving your view, and Old Town.
You think it may had dropped an airdrop of supplies, so you go to check, but when you are about to jump, you hear in near distance a Volatile growl, yelling "Draemir".
You turn to look, and you see a blue trail in the distance, a blue outline standing still while staring at you. Must be Zhrak.
You impulse yourself, your jumps now reach to pass a roof, and land in the next. You quickly reach the Volatile, and stand in front of it.
Zhrak: "Draemir, your growth reached its maturity. You matured very quickly, and grew much faster than anyone else."
-"Yeah, it's nice to see you too."
Zhrak: "Did you obtain what you wanted from your travel?"
You get out from one of your pockets the gray case, showing it to the Volatile.
-"Yes, I got it."
You then save the gray case in it's pocket again.
Zhrak: "Well, you are not a child anymore, but you still can continue your growth further. Did you settle in a home nest?"
-"No, I don't have a home nest."
Zhrak: "Come with me. You will settle in a nest as your home, and you will be incubated to continue your growth."
-"Wait, I want to do something first."
Zhrak wonders, but waits. You then yell a Volatile growl, what surprises Zhrak, but makes it more proud than surprised.
After you yell, Zhrak also yells a growl, and so, after Zhrak yells, you two coordinate to yell together a growl of Volatiles. What you hear as "¡HUNTING TIME!".
Then, you start following Zhrak through the roofs, after a moment, you continue until entering from where you entered Old Town, returning into the Slums.
After a big while, Zhrak leads you to Rais' base, still in process of becoming a Volatile nest, but all corpses are in the incubation process, while Volatiles are already living in this new nest.
Zhrak: "Welcome to your home nest, Draemir. From now on, this will be your home nest."
-"... Thanks, Zhrak..."
You start walking around, observing how all Volatile are settled, same as all the members of Rais' gang who survived in incubation process, while who died as food supplies. Volatiles are natural hunters, as that is how the virus settled them to be, and their pray are non-infecteds, humans.
Suddenly, something grabs your right shoulder, and leads you with strength to other room, bringing you to a special room, as you see a lot of members of Rais' gang alive in incubation, trapped and forced, as red lines of blood or something strange to you from the ground cover their legs and waist, and grabs them by the shoulders.
Then, you feel as that strength sits you down, and when you look, it was a Volatile.
Zhrak: "Let me incubate you a little. Will be much less than how should be, but you are a special one, so we must treat you with special treatment."
You don't resist, but accept it, as after all, you are grabbing a path for a brand entirely new life and way to live. Meanwhile, Zhrak opens it's mouth, and spits red liquid that starts to cover you, but go down. Other Volatiles near come and start settling you, also spitting the same red liquid, but then, you feel as the liquid starts to become sticky, as you start to be unable to move.
The red liquid, solidified with some speed, surprising you, and trapping you, as slowly covers your legs and waist. The Volatiles continue settling the incubation, placing their claws on the red liquid, as solidifies fast, is not liquid completely, and they shape it as lines that work as chains once this red lines touch you.
The Volatiles settle multiple red lines over your torso and vest, and they even spit red liquid directly at your torso.
-"Should I put away the objects I'm carrying?"
Zhrak: "Don't worry, your growth will affect this objects too. Your growth will mark the change in life. You will become the strongest hunter in all home nests. We never expected you, but we're not declining you. Someone as special as you, will become the hunter leader. With you, we will survive, and live for long time."
You see how the Volatiles start to leave or wander around, while Zhrak remains in front of you, working on your incubation process to make sure it works different than ordinary for Volatiles.
Zhrak relaxes you, and the active virus in the red liquid gives you the side effect of being tired, and so, you fall asleep, resting while the active virus in the red liquid alters your body.
After the night passes, you wake up in the morning, hungry, and noticing how you are completely covered by some sort of red web lines, from a red solid circle around your legs and waist, covering them completely, and red lines from it covering your torso, arms, hands, and vest.
After a moment of waking up, some Volatiles break you free, you get up, and see you have changed completely. Your feet, legs, arms, hands, torso and vest, and even your equipment as your backpack, specialized M4, specialized M1911, and even other tools saved in pockets inside your vest.
Marco has now reached a new, more advanced stage in his evolution, reflecting the intense growth and changes brought about by the incubation process. Here is a detailed description of his current appearance:
Physical Appearance:
Torso and Vest Integration:
Marco's ribs are now visible and pronounced, like those of a traditional Volatile, but they are encased within his fused vest, which now serves as a skeletal, armor-like structure. The vest itself appears reinforced, with sharp, bone-like protrusions running along the chest and shoulders. These protrusions look like natural extensions of his skeletal system but retain a metallic, armored sheen from the vest's original material. A faint glow emanates from the seams of his vest and torso, alternating between a vibrant red and golden hue, signaling the active state of his mutation.
Arms and Hands:
His arms are bulkier, with muscle definition that looks unnatural, almost alien. The veins running along his arms glow faintly with a red-gold pulsation. His hands are elongated, with claw-like fingers. These claws are sharper, slightly thicker, and darker in color, resembling obsidian or onyx with faint glowing cracks running through them.
Legs and Feet:
His legs are now more Volatile-like, with visible tendons and skeletal ridges, offering a more agile and predatory look. The fusion with his vest extends down to his thighs, where the red webbing from the incubation has hardened into a flexible but durable exoskeleton, reinforcing his movement. His feet are larger and clawed, with the same dark, volcanic-like texture as his hands. They are built for speed and silent movement, with pads on the soles for better traction.
Head and Neck:
Marco's head and neck remain mostly human in appearance, maintaining a contrast to the rest of his body. However, faint red lines are now visible under his skin, especially around his jawline and temples. His mouth retains the ability to transform into a Volatile's split-jaw form when needed, but in its closed state, it looks relatively normal, albeit with sharper teeth peeking out. His eyes glow faintly with a golden-red hue, and his pupils are now slightly slit, giving him a predatory gaze.
General Body Changes:
His overall frame is slightly larger than before, with broader shoulders and a more intimidating stance. His posture is upright, but there's a primal tension in his movements, like a predator always ready to strike.
Equipment and Tools:
Backpack and Storage:
Marco's backpack is now an extension of his vest, seamlessly fused into his back. It retains its storage functionality but looks organic, with a mixture of hardened plating and glowing red veins. The compartments are more flexible yet durable, reshaped to blend with his new skeletal armor.
Specialized M4 and M1911:
Both weapons have undergone changes during the incubation process:
Specialized M4: The rifle now appears partially organic, with faint red veins running along its barrel and stock. It's slightly lighter yet more durable, designed for quick and precise handling.
Specialized M1911: The pistol has similar modifications, with glowing engravings along its slide. The grip feels natural, as if molded specifically for Marco's clawed hands. Both weapons are holstered within built-in slots in his vest, which seem to "lock" the weapons in place as if they're part of his body.
Injector Tool:
The injector has also been altered. Its metallic components are now darker, with glowing red accents, and it feels more responsive, almost alive, when handled.
Radio:
The radio has fused partially with his vest, with its interface visible on a small patch near his left shoulder. It seems to activate automatically when touched, and its signal range has improved significantly.
Overall Impression:
Marco now resembles a hybrid between a human and a Volatile, leaning closer to the infected side but maintaining enough human traits to distinguish him as unique. His presence is commanding, almost regal, but undeniably menacing, with every step and movement exuding raw power and predatory grace. The incubation process has further blurred the line between man and monster, making him a figure that inspires both awe and fear among allies and enemies alike.
Thank you for clarifying Zhrak's character and the broader lore of Volatiles and their "home nests." I'll refine my approach to stay true to their natural hunter instincts, lack of gender identity, and their cultural logic. Let's reshape the narrative accordingly.
Zhrak circles around you, its glowing blue veins pulsating faintly in the darkness of the home nest. Its clawed hands rest idly at its sides as it examines you with quiet intensity. There's no grandeur in its movement, only the natural grace and caution of a hunter.
Zhrak: "You have grown, Draemir. No longer a child... but not yet finished. This home nest has given you strength, and the others see it. They feel it."
Its voice carries the guttural tones of a Volatile, punctuated by growls and clicks. The other Volatiles, hiding in the shadows of the nest, stir slightly at Zhrak's words. Their glowing eyes observe you from a distance but remain non-confrontational.
Zhrak pauses, tilting its head slightly as it studies you again.
Zhrak: "You should hunt. Feed. Grow more. The path forward is not for the weak. The sunlight fuels you, but flesh sustains you."
It steps aside, gesturing toward the entrance of the home nest with a slow, deliberate movement.
Zhrak: "The night is ours, Draemir. Go, or stay to settle more in the home nest. Choose."
The tone is practical, devoid of ceremony or attachment. Zhrak remains the guide it has been since your first meeting, focused on survival and growth, just as any natural hunter would be. It neither pressures nor directs but waits silently for your decision. The other Volatiles, sensing your next move, remain watchful and still.
-"... I'll go hunting. It is daytime, so you can't hunt... I can go... Also, I'm hungry."
Zhrak: "Then hunt, Draemir. Take what you need. Return stronger."
