Chapter 8: Ophis
The Palais Mermonia was currently hustling with activity. Dozens of Fatui Agents briskly walked around, all heading to different offices and transferring valuable information as they worked.
With Neuvillette's unexpected return and his actions, the volume of work had increased exponentially, and everyone was currently relatively swarmed.
Neuvillette himself was currently in his person office, a vast chamber that was illuminated by a soft, ambient light, lined with towering bookshelves filled with ancient tomes and scrolls.
Neuvillette sat behind his intricately carved desk, his pen moving with precision as he reviewed the files before him. He himself was probably swarmed with the most work, as he was reviewing most of the cases that had been incomplete over the past twenty years.
Each of these documents detailed the crimes committed by not only the Devils, but everyone in the Supernatural World whom had gone unpunished. Listed was the crime they committed, the evidence, how long they had been evading punishment, and extra miscellaneous information.
The cases were as numerous as they were grave, and Neuvillette was patient and detailed as he reviewed and remembered all the information, being thorough in his readings.
A silver tea set rested on a nearby table, steam curling delicately from a cup that was only half-filled after Neuvillette took a drink not too long ago.
With a steady hand, he inscribed a note onto a parchment, marking the schedule for the first round of trials. His mind, though calm and organized, carried the solemnity of the task ahead.
The Court needed to not only punish the guilty, but re-establish their influence and once again bring about balance and remind the Supernatural world of the sanctity of its laws.
Reading many of the horrific things that went unpunished during his retreat affirmed Neuvillette' dedication to Justice and protecting the world from the harm of evil.
As he placed the quill back in its holder, a subtle shift in the air drew his attention. The room, previously serene, now felt charged with an otherworldly presence. Neuvillette's gaze lifted from the parchment, his expression unchanging as he regarded the figure standing silently at the head of his desk.
It was Ophis.
The Infinite Dragon God stood right at the head of Neuvillette's desk with a deadpan expression. She was in her signature appearance, being that of a cute young girl with long black hair down to her hips and grey reptilian eyes, wearing her classic black Gothic Lolita dress.
Neuvillette dropped his pen into the holder and looked towards Ophis whose deadpan expression remained unchanged.
A weird silence descended upon the room as they looked at each-other before Neuvillette finally decided to speak, "Ophis, to what do I owe the honor of your appearance."
"You're back." Ophis said in her deadpan tone, her eyes staring at Neuvillette as he now rested his hands on his desk.
"That I am." Neuvillette said, "Although it seems you've been quite disruptive during my leave." his eyes narrowed slightly as he spoke, though his tone remained relatively composed.
"Baka Red is still in the Dimensional Gap. I want to regain that silence." Orphis spoke monotonously, getting straight to the point.
"Joining the Khaos Brigade is not the solution, although I can't blame you, you can be quite childish at times." Neuvillette spoke, packing up his papers and placing them into a secure binder.
"Hmfm, don't call me childish." Ophis' monotonous tone became changed slightly, turning into more of a slight argumentative tone as she spoke.\
Neuvillette didn't mind her tone of voice, gracefully rising from his chair as his towering frame exuded an aura of authority as he packed the binder of files into a drawer of the desk.
His gaze lingered on Ophis for a moment, and though his expression remained composed, there was a glint of disapproval in his piercing eyes as he remembered what she was up to during his disappearance.
"Come," he said, his voice firm yet calm, "We're going for a walk. There are matters we need to discuss, and this is not the place."
Ophis tilted her head slightly, her unchanging expression betraying a flicker of curiosity, "Where?" she asked simply.
"You'll see," Neuvillette replied, extending a hand.
Ophis stared at his hand for a moment before nodding once. With a subtle gesture, Neuvillette summoned a portal of shimmering silver-blue light, its edges crackling faintly with energy.
He stepped through, and Ophis followed without hesitation, her long black hair flowing behind her like liquid shadow.
"Is that a Father & Daughter?"
"She's so cute?"
"I wonder if they're celebrities."
"Having a daughter like that would cure all my problems."
"What do you mean. You're a poor bastard now, you'll just be a poor bastard with a daughter."
The duo emerged in the bustling heart of Tokyo, with Neuvillette using some magic to make the mortals ignore their sudden appearance. Still, their appearance drew a large amount of attention due to Neuvillette's handsomeness and Ophis' cuteness.
Tokyo was teeming with life as humans bustled about under the neon lights of a sprawling shopping district. The air was filled with the chatter of passersby, the hum of vehicles, and the faint scent of street food wafting through the crisp evening air.
As they stepped onto the crowded sidewalk, Neuvillette's attire shifted seamlessly, yet invisible to the eyes of Mortals. His ornate robes were replaced by a tailored navy-blue suit, his silvery-blue hair tied back neatly, giving him the appearance of a distinguished businessman.
Beside him, Ophis's Gothic Lolita dress remained unchanged, though her ethereal presence seemed to go unnoticed by the mortals around them.
Ophis blinked, glancing around at the bright signs and towering buildings. "It's loud," she remarked, her tone as flat as ever, yet her expression betrayed a slight bit of annoyance at the surroundings.
"Indeed," Neuvillette replied, his hands clasped behind his back as he began to walk, "A stark contrast to the Dimensional Gap you so dearly long for."
Ophis trailed beside him, her small frame a sharp contrast to his towering presence. She glanced up at him as they walked, her expression unchanging. "Why are we here?"
Neuvillette's gaze remained forward, his voice steady, "We're here because I need you to understand something, Ophis. You cannot go around aiding groups like the Khaos Brigade. Their actions disrupt the balance of the world, and I expect better from you."
Ophis stopped in her tracks, her grey reptilian eyes wide as she processed his words. For the first time, a flicker of emotion crossed her face, confusion, regret, and perhaps a hint of hurt at his words, "Better…?" she repeated softly, her voice trailing off.
Neuvillette turned to face her, his expression softening slightly as he placed a hand on her shoulder, "You are the Infinite Dragon God, Ophis. Your power is unparalleled, but with that power comes responsibility. Associating with terrorists undermines not only your own dignity but the balance we are all meant to uphold."
Ophis stared at him in silence, her usual bluntness absent as she struggled to find words. She lowered her gaze, her small hands clutching the fabric of her dress. "I…I just want Baka Red gone." she admitted quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Neuvillette chuckled and looked at her, "I've probably said this to you a million times, you've learned so much, yet you revert once I leave." He said, regarding her for a moment before he continued, "I will not force you to leave the Khaos Brigade, but I cannot allow you to continue aiding them. If you choose to stay with me, I will ensure you have the silence you need."
Ophis lifted her head, her eyes meeting his. "Stay… with you?" she asked, her tone carrying a note of curiosity.
Before Neuvillette could respond, her attention was suddenly drawn to a nearby store window. Her gaze locked onto a display of plushies, her eyes fixating on a particularly adorable Pikachu plushie.
She pointed at it wordlessly, then turned to Neuvillette, her expression unchanging but her intent unmistakable.
Neuvillette followed her gaze and let out a faint sigh, though the corners of his lips twitched upward in the faintest of smiles. He walked into the store, Ophis trailing behind him like a shadow.
As they approached the counter with the Pikachu plushie in hand, the sales clerk, a cheerful young man with a bright smile, glanced between Neuvillette and Ophis, "Your daughter has excellent taste!" he remarked warmly, "She's adorable."
Neuvillette blinked, momentarily caught off guard, "She is not,"
"Banana," Ophis interrupted, pointing to a small basket of banana keychains near the counter.
The sales clerk chuckled, misinterpreting the interaction entirely. "Oh, kids and their love for cute things! You must be a doting father."
Neuvillette sighed softly, handing over the payment for the plushie and a banana keychain, "Thank you," he said politely, choosing not to correct the misunderstanding.
As they left the store, Ophis hugged the Pikachu plushie tightly, her expression as deadpan as ever, "I like this one," she stated simply.
Neuvillette glanced down at her, his expression softening once more. "Then it is yours, although we didn't need to pay for it, I thought you knew the Fatui owned Pokemon" he replied.
Although he didn't have perfect memory of his past life, Neuvillette had enough to bring over certain things into this lifetime. The Fatui had to pay their bills somehow after all.
"What are Pokemon?" Ophis asked curiously.
Neuvillette just sighed and the duo continued walking until arriving at a park. Neuvillette sat on the bench and motioned Ophis to do the same, which she did, looking at the bustling streets.
"I'll stay," she said after a moment, her voice quiet but resolute, "But I still want silence."
Neuvillette placed a hand on her shoulder as they walked. "I'll have Sydney make a special space for you to maintain your silence, but you'll need to be patient, it might take a bit."
The Infinite Dragon God said nothing further, clutching her new plushie as they sat and inspected the lively streets of Tokyo.
