Chapter 73 – Consequence of Evil Nature
The golden aura emanating from Excalibur was pure intensity, and when Raynare stood up with the sword, I immediately realized that its power had been amplified.
Raynare slung the sword over her shoulder and began to radiate an aura of contempt again, as if she had suddenly regained all her lost confidence.
"You're finished now, you bastard!" Raynare shouted with a fury that seemed to have been revived by the flames of the sword. "This is the true power of a fallen angel! Look what I can do now!" She raised Excalibur above her head, as if about to deliver the final blow that she believed would bring her victory.
'This is going to be tricky…' I thought.
Although my body was resistant, I knew that a single direct blow from this blade could be fatal, even for someone of my current strength.
{Boost!} Ddraig's scream echoed in my mind as a reminder that I was not alone in this fight.
So I activated Scale Mail. The red, metallic plates began to cover my body, one by one, like a second skin. Each segment of the armor vibrated with the accumulated power of the boosts I had received, making me not only stronger, but more resilient than ever. The Scale Mail was my ace up my sleeve, the protection that could keep Excalibur from tearing me to shreds.
Raynare's eyes widened at the sight of my armor. But instead of flinching, she gave me her grim smile again. "You think this armor will save you? Nothing can stop the power of Excalibur!" She shouted and flew at me.
The blade came down in a deadly arc, slicing through the air with a terrifying whirr. I blocked the attack with my Scale Mail-covered forearm, feeling the impact reverberate through my body. Excalibur's power was overwhelming, but the Scale Mail held and absorbed the shock.
'This armor is made from the scales of the mightiest dragon! I expected nothing less!'
{Of course, I'm amazing, Leo!}
Still, the holy blade left a visible mark on the armor, proving that the sword's power was not to be underestimated.
Before Raynare could attack again, I moved, taking advantage of her moment of hesitation. I turned my body and fired a blow at her abdomen, using the power of the Boosted Gear and a small explosion to amplify the impact. It threw her far away, and she only stopped when she used her wings to balance herself in the air.
"You think you can beat me?" Raynare shouted, raising her sword again. "I am a fallen angel! I am a superior being, made to dominate! You are nothing but a devil, a filthy, despicable creature!" She advanced again, attacking with blind fury.
I blocked and dodged these attacks as best I could, feeling the pressure of the attacks increase by the second.
Scale Mail stopped most of them, but it was dangerous to keep it up for long. Each Excalibur attack, even if blocked, pushed me backwards, and the wounds on my armor began to multiply.
"The power you're so proud of is not yours. You're just a shadow using something you shouldn't." I warned her.
"Shut up!" She roared, raising her sword for another strike.
Raynare screamed insults and curses at my name, but it was past the point where I could respond rationally. She was nothing more than a being consumed by the rage she felt at seeing me so close to her level of power.
Suddenly, however, something changed. Excalibur began to vibrate in her hands, as if resisting Raynare's control. She tried to steady her grip on the hilt, but the sword shook again, and the golden light surrounding it began to pulse erratically.
Raynare took a step back, her eyes wide in confusion.
"What... what's happening?" She whispered, looking at the blade as it began to behave strangely, as if it were alive and rejecting its bearer.
It was then that the first cracks appeared on Raynare's skin. Small, almost imperceptible, but they spread quickly, like spider webs branching out all over her body, or like a vase shattering in slow motion.
Raynare dropped her sword to the ground and stared at her hands in horror as the skin began to split, revealing an intense light underneath. She fell to her knees, horror and pain on her face. She tried to get up, but her muscles wouldn't respond and the cracks began to widen.
"No... this can't be... I'm a fallen angel... I... I can't die like this... No..." Her voice trembled between tears as her body was destroyed from within by the holy energy of the sword.
Suddenly, thunder rumbled in the distance, and the atmosphere suddenly became even heavier. The clouds above us churned violently, the sky turned red, and a resounding voice echoed through the sky.
"Raynare, you incompetent fool."
I looked up to see an imposing figure hovering high in the air. It was a being with ten outstretched black wings, and the power emanating from it was overwhelming even from a distance. It was a power so tremendous that it made me feel insignificant.
"K-Kokabiel..." Raynare stammered. "Please... help me... I... I can..."
"Silence." Kokabiel's voice was relentlessly cold. "You failed. You used a power that was not meant for you, and now you will pay the price for your arrogance. I gave you a clear command, my subjects. Yet you disobeyed. Excalibur was to be used when our Chimera was born."
"B-but... I..."
"No 'but'. I'll give you a quick end as a reward for your services. Die."
With a snap of his fingers, Kokabiel made an extremely powerful light spear appear under Raynare's head. She had neither the strength nor the time to react before it crushed her like nothing.
"Now, bearer of the Red Dragon Empress, hand over Excalibur and I'll consider sparing your life."
