Dream a Nightmare

Chapter 21: Dreams Recovered

Tommy felt a sharp pain, and looked down. For less than a second, he saw a blade sticking out of his chest, buried hilt-deep by Dream.

Then he dissolved to smoke.

Tommy hit the respawn button immediately. He was gasping from the sudden shock of dying, but there was no time for that now. He looked around, slightly confused at first, then remembered why he was here. Dream. He seethed silently. How dare Dream kill him? He was TommyInnit. He was supposed to win.

Tommy clenched his fist tight. He rummaged through one of his chests, searching for a weapon. Soon though, he got tired of looking. What if Tubbo needed his help? Tubbo couldn't face Dream alone. Maybe with his reduced health... But Tommy had only hit Dream a few times. Tommy snatched the closest thing he could find, a wooden pickaxe, and charged over.

He descended the ladder to the ravine, moving as quickly as he could. He silently cursed Minecraft for making ladders all the same speed. He looked down the ladder shaft, but the majority of it was only one block wide. He didn't have enough space to properly fall down.

Tommy growled again, impatient. His fingers itched as he slowly descended. He wanted to do something. Fight. He needed to be back in the action.

He had been cut off just as he and Tubbo had gotten into a rhythm. They were just gearing up. If Dream....

Tommy froze. He saw it. The death message in chat. He caught a glimpse, and saw Dream and Tubbo. Who had killed who? He almost couldn't bear to look.

He imagined that he could hear the creak in his neck as he reached the bottom of the ladder.

It couldn't be.

Could it?

No.

It was.

Dream was slain by Tubbo.

He actually did it? That little rat. That sneaky, wonderful rat.

Tommy let out a whoop of pure joy as he charged towards Tubbo, dropping his pickaxe, forgotten, and leaping at Tubbo, enfolding him in a masive hug.

Tubbo's face was a visage of astonishment and triumph as he held up Tommy's disc. The second disc. The last one. They had done it. It hadn't been very long, but it had been a roller coaster of a time.

But it was almost worth it to see Tubbo like that. That glory, that pride, that joy.

Tommy backed up for a moment to let Tubbo catch his breath. After all, he had just defeated Dream himself. But Tubbo didn't seem to need it.

He embraced Tommy right back, squeezing tightly. Tommy detected a slight fatigue beneath his enthusiasm, but it was the good kind of fatigue. The kind that comes from a victory hard-fought, and won with difficulty. Tommy didn't really understand, because in his opinion, the best victory was one where the other side never stood a chance. But he let Tubbo have his moment.

He had earned it, after all. Defeating Dream? Not just any player, not just a good PvP-er. Dream himself. Tubbo was almost giddy, and Tommy was only slightly less encouraged. Tubbo's joy was infectious. Sure, Tommy had died, but this was Dream himself. The Dream who had defeated many players before in manhunts, and PvP duels of all kinds.

And they had killed him. Smiling and shaking his head, Tommy stepped back from Tubbo. Tubbo stepped back as well, eyes shining, and held out the disc to Tommy. Sapnap came up to them, grinning like a fool.

He patted Tubbo on the back, congratulating him, then turned to face Tommy, expectant.

Tommy still grinning, took out his other disc, and smiled. He took the disc from Tubbo, and held them both up, letting out a shout of victory. Tubbo and Sapnap joined him with whoops of their own, and their noises of celebration echoed through the cavern. Tommy placed down a jukebox and slid one of the discs in.

This was a time for celebration. They had won. His dreams were returned to him.
