Chapter 46: Different from Expectation

Su Bai stepped forward and observed the dense water drops on the window. He knew well that it couldn’t be Director Zhou’s AC; it was because…
Nona…
…had already gotten to him.
It seemed that such cold was not from the ice locker any more; rather, Nona herself was giving off coldness constantly, which was even more horrifying than one could imagine. Besides, according to the usual practice of this Dreadful Radio, a supernatural being would be enhanced and become even more creepy than it was in the reality. Like those paper men from his last task— they became something like a bug in the story, against which only people like Childe Hai could last for a little while and other audiences were killed on the site.
“The door’s locked from inside. Director! Zhou!”
Fat Dong called out.
Su Bai was standing beside him; he said nothing, just kicked hard on the door. But the door remained unmoved while Su Bai bounced backward and leaned onto the handrail.
“The door’s frozen.”
True, the entire door was frozen from inside, even the gap was filled with ice. Therefore, the door had become extremely solid.
Wang Hongsheng swung his stick toward the window.
“Crack!”
It caused a harsh noise. The window was covered with a transparent ice layer, but it was not just ordinary ice. Wang Hongsheng was a martial artist; even though he was injured his attack was still strong. But the window was still unharmed.
“Let’s call for help.” Fat Dong suggested.
“No, don’t involve others.” Su Bai objected immediately, “If we call for help, others will know, and the story will be utterly changed, once and for all.”
“Then what should we do? Zhou must be in danger!”
Wang Hongsheng asked.
Su Bai took a deep breath. Couldn’t get in through the door or the window, couldn’t force in through the wall due to lack of resources and conditions… They were in a really difficult position now.
And Director Zhou might not be able to survive this.
However, the next moment, the ice on the door and windows started to melt.
That surprised Wang Hongsheng, Fat Dong and Su Bai, who were already mourning for Director Zhou in their minds.
The door…
…opened.
A chilly wind came out. Fat Dong was standing right in front of the door, so when the wind passed him, he was covered with frost. Shivering, he opened his mouth and breathed out deeply. He looked very confused.
“That’s damn freaking cold!”
Su Bai took out his gun and rushed into the office. But someone stepped into his way just after he got in the room.
Su Bai raised his gun.
So did the other guy.
They were pointing to each other’s forehead with guns.
Neither of them would put away their gun before the other.
Director Zhou had his gun against Su Bai’s head; he was giving off a severe killing intent despite being a mess and bleeding with frozen injury on his face and chilblains on his palms.
Su Bai looked very determined.
“He’s with us!”
Wang Hongsheng quickly stepped forward and sheltered them from each other.
Only then did Su Bai and Director Zhou put away their guns at the same time. After that, Director Zhou rushed to the handrail and looked down. A white shadow was heading outside; it was not running but floating in the air.
“Go!”
Director rushed downstairs.
Su Bai hesitated, but went after him.
Fat Dong just stood there rubbing his hands; he was almost frozen to death.
Wang Hongsheng was injured so he couldn’t follow them either.
Apparently that white shadow was Nona. Su Bai recognized that coldness. Clearly, the Dreadful Radio had wickedly enhanced Nona’s change after her death. Nona was a tomb raider, which was rather mysterious among all kinds of illegal business; there were many secrets hidden in the tombs, and Nona must have something special that caused the change after her death. At first, Nona wasn’t that creepy; but with the “help” of Dreadful Radio, everything had gone out of control.
However, what surprised Su Bai was that Director Zhou had survived!
Su Bai only suspected this old guy to be someone important in the reality— whether among politics or criminals, he must be a powerful man, otherwise he wouldn’t be acting so perfectly after he was made a director in the police station.
But little did he know that Director Zhou was even more powerful than he had imagined. He was much more scheming than he had showed.
That white shadow seemed to be invisible to others; only Su Bai and Director Zhou could see it. They saw the shadow rushing into a minivan which had just passed the gate of the police station before it left.
In no time, Directly Zhou got in a police car which was about to leave the police station. Su Bai followed him, got in and sat on the rear seat.
Director Zhou and Su Bai looked at each other for a moment. Just a few minutes ago, they were pointing at each other with guns and their intention to kill had not utterly disappeared yet.
Luckily, Director Zhou knew what was more important. He said to the officer sitting in front of him:
“Hurry! Catch that minivan in the front!”
Two officers were sitting in the front. It seemed that they were driving out for some kind of assignment.
“Yes, sir.”
The officer was obedient. He started the car, made a turn and started tailing the mini van.
Somehow, the minivan was driving fast. The driver clearly knew there was a police car following them but he didn’t slow down at all; instead, the car was running at full speed, like a cat with a burning tail.
At last, these two cars left the urban areas and ran into the countryside.
Ahead of them, there was a small bridge; on both sides of that bridge, there were flour factories. At this time of a year, flour factories were not very busy and their workers were on vacation; therefore, it was very quiet.
The minivan went through the bridge; but the police car, on the other hand, pulled over before the bridge.
Director Zhou burst into roar at once: “Why stop here? Go after them!”
Su Bai quietly took out his gun. In the meantime, he saw Director Zhou had pulled out his gun as well, which suggested that Director Zhou had reacted as fast as he did, and that roar was just a distraction.
Just then, the two officers in the front turned their faces around at the same time, and a bright light burst out in the car; it was dazzling.
Su Bai immediately felt as if his eyes were blinded, but his crisis awareness guided him to open the door with his right hand, roll out of the car and run aside as fast as he could. After falling over for a few times, his sight recovered.
On the other side, Director Zhou had also left the car, and he was only dozens of meters away.
Then, both front doors of the police car opened. The officers stepped outside, put their hands by their cheeks at the same time and tore off their masks made of human skin. Two different faces came to light.
“Yo-ho, after all this time, the fish has finally taken the bait.”
An officer smiled.
Su Bai had seen the current faces of these two officers. On his first day in this story world, he had seen them by the gate of the police station— they were sitting on the front seats of that car containing five audiences!
Director Zhou wiped his mouth and stood up.
Su Bai patted the dust off his sleeves and then stood up as well.
“Aha, fearless experiencers! That’s rare.” An officer laughed. Then his skin started to harden as if his skin was covered with a layer of rocks. He became a little clumsy, but obviously tougher.
The other officer threw up his hands. A flame appeared from his palms, flickering with faint cold light.
“How about giving up? You’re no match for us.”
Hearing this, Director Zhou also smiled. He waved his gun around and pointed to himself, “Are you talking to me or him?”
“Both.” One of the officers answered.
“Oh. Then try us.” Director Zhou slightly bent over and performed a horse stance. There was no wind but the grass round him all waved. All of a sudden, he revealed an aura completely different from a police director.
A serious look appeared on both police officers’ faces. An expert would be recognized as soon as he started acting. They realized that this director was not an easy target.
At the same time, Su Bai lowered his head and breathed. He was trying very hard to recall that hunger. After such a long time, he had worked out some tricks to stimulate his unique skill.
The next moment, Su Bai’s temperament suddenly changed into a gloomy and ruthless one, and his hair became disheveled. He slowly raised his head up; his eyes were utterly scarlet, and from both corners of his mouth…
…there were two fangs coming out.
The officers looked at each other and swallowed…
Such image… seemed to be very different…
…from what they had in mind.
