Towering over the battlefield, the Sentinel was a nightmare of steel and circuitry. Its purple and silver armor gleamed under the cave's dim lighting, eyes glowing a menacing red. Its broad shoulders, lined with vents and exposed wiring, gave it a monstrous stature, while its massive hands flexed, each finger the size of a man's forearm. A smooth, expressionless faceplate emitted a synthetic voice that reverberated through the cavern.

"Enemies detected. Copying powers. Annihilation of the enemy: commence."

The X-Men barely had time to react before the Sentinel's eyes flared with a scanning pulse, reading and copying the powers of everyone present.

"Alright, that's new." Wolverine unsheathed his claws, crouching into a stance. "Never fought one of these tin cans before, but I already hate it."

"We need to take it down before it fully processes our abilities!" shouted Cyclops. "Everyone, focus your attacks—"

He turned to Aiden, expecting him to already be in the fight. But Aiden was gone. Nowhere to be seen. The bloodied ground where he had just stood was empty, as if he had disappeared into the ether.

"Where the hell did the kid go?!" Logan barked.

Jean stretched her mind, searching for Aiden's presence, but was met with an eerie silence. "I... I can't sense him. It's like he's just vanished."

"Great, guess we're on our own," Beast muttered, adjusting his stance.

"Then we do this the old-fashioned way," Scott growled, turning his visor toward the approaching enemy. "X-Men, attack!"

The battle erupted into chaos. Cyclops unleashed a focused optic blast at the Sentinel's chest, but the machine absorbed the energy, its armor glowing red before dispersing the attack harmlessly.

"Oh, come on!" he shouted in frustration.

Storm summoned a crackling bolt of lightning, striking the Sentinel directly. Electricity danced across its body, but it barely staggered before redirecting the energy into its own palm, forming a deadly counterattack.

"Watch out!" she called, barely dodging a retaliatory surge of electricity that blasted a crater into the cave floor.

Beast lunged at the machine's leg, his powerful limbs aiming to tear at the joints, but the Sentinel responded by sprouting metallic tendrils from its back, wrapping around his body and slamming him into the ground.

"Not very sporting of you," Beast groaned, shaking off the impact.

Meanwhile, Wolverine roared as he leaped onto the Sentinel's shoulder, slashing down with adamantium claws, sparks flying with each strike. The Sentinel, unfazed, suddenly coated its own hands in shimmering metallic claws, mirroring Logan's attack before swiping at him.

"Yeah, that's a no from me!" Logan grunted as he barely dodged the counterattack.

Jean focused, attempting to lift the machine with telekinesis, but the Sentinel's eyes flared again. "Telepathic attack detected. Initiating countermeasures." A psychic pulse surged outward, slamming into Jean's mind and sending her reeling.

"This thing has psychic resistance!" she gasped, gripping her temples.

"This thing has everything!" Bobby shouted from the side, his hands coated in ice as he formed a wall to separate them from the attacking Brotherhood mutants. "And we've got company!"

John and Amara wasted no time engaging the younger X-Men.

"Miss me, Iceman?" John sneered, hurling a stream of flames. Bobby countered with a freezing blast, the flames hissing into steam as they collided mid-air.

Noriko and Jubilation were locked in a fierce clash with the other mutants.

"You ever get tired of being a traitorous asshole, John?" Noriko taunted as she dodged a fireball.

"Eh, keeps things interesting," he smirked, only to yelp as she sent a crackling surge of electricity his way. "Damn it, Nori!"

Amara smirked at Jubilee. "You should've stayed out of this, little girl."

Jubilation snapped her gum, unfazed. "Yeah? And you should've stayed in your lane." She flicked her hands, sending a barrage of explosive plasma sparks at Amara, forcing her to dodge.

Bobby gritted his teeth, forming an ice slide to gain height as he tried to freeze John solid. "You traitors really don't know when to quit, huh?"

John dodged, setting Bobby's ice slicks ablaze. "Oh, please. Like you're one to talk about loyalty."

The battle raged on, chaos unfolding in every direction. The X-Men were fighting tooth and nail, but the Sentinel's ability to copy and counter their attacks made it an overwhelming opponent.

And Aiden was still nowhere to be found.

....

Kitty pressed forward, her breath shallow as she phased through the cold, rusted metal bars of the underground cell. The dim, flickering light above barely illuminated the battered figure curled up on the floor. Rogue lay motionless, her usual defiance stripped away, replaced by exhaustion and bruises that marred her skin. Two other mutants sat slumped against the far wall, barely conscious, their ragged breathing the only sign they were still alive.

"Rogue!" Kitty rushed to her, slipping her gloves on before shaking her friend gently. "Rogue, wake up! We're here! We're getting you out!"

A weak groan escaped Rogue's lips as her eyes fluttered open just enough to meet Kitty's. "Kitty... Ugh—no... cough cough... Don't—it's a..."

Before the warning could fully form, something struck Kitty's face like a sledgehammer. Pain exploded in her skull as she staggered backward, barely processing the speed of the attack before another savage kick crashed into her ribs. The impact sent her flying into the stone wall, her vision going black as she crumpled to the floor.

The silence that followed was broken by the slow, deliberate sound of shifting flesh.

A smirk curled across the lips of the mutant who had been locked in the cell. His skin rippled, shifting hue—flesh turning deep blue, body morphing into a sleek and familiar form.

Mystique stood tall, rolling her shoulders as she admired her handiwork. "Thanks for the help, little girl," she purred, stepping over Kitty's unconscious form. A cruel glint shone in her yellow eyes. "Now we've got ourselves another bargaining chip for that monster you call a friend."

She turned to Rogue, who could do nothing but glare weakly in defiance. Mystique merely chuckled.

"Let's see how far he's willing to go for you too."
