In the Basement.
Vegeta's words caught Son Gohan completely off guard.
"Gohan, did Vegeta just… call your name? Wait, did I hear that right? Is the sun rising in the west now?" It wasn't just Gohan who found it hard to believe; Bulma was just as stunned.
After all, ever since Vegeta first arrived on Earth, he had always dismissed Son Gohan as nothing more than the offspring of a low-class Saiyan, Kakarot's kid.
Just two days ago, before the chaos with the Androids erupted, Vegeta had coldly compared Gohan to Trunks with a sneer of disdain. In his mind, the son of a low-class warrior would always fall short of Trunks, who carried the proud bloodline of Saiyan royalty.
But what Bulma didn't know was that Vegeta's shift in attitude came after hearing the inner voice of his son, Trunks, and the battle with the Androids only confirmed that Trunks hadn't exaggerated a thing.
In that bleak future, Gohan had stood as Earth's final protector, fighting to the death against the Androids while shielding Trunks from certain doom.
That alone earned Gohan Vegeta's unspoken respect. At this moment, Vegeta no longer saw him as merely Kakarot's boy.
To him now, Son Gohan was worthy, worthy of being addressed by name.
"So, Gohan," Bulma asked, her voice cutting through the quiet, "Are you going with Vegeta to see Mr. Popo?"
Son Gohan hesitated.
Bulma watched him closely, waiting for his answer. Trunks lay nearby, doing the same. In that pause, flashes of memories stormed through Gohan's mind, Piccolo, and that haunting moment when everyone's energy vanished from the world.
His fists clenched. The desire to grow stronger, to crush the Androids, burned within him.
But now, something else weighed on him.
"Bulma Obasan …" He finally said, "I want to train with Uncle Vegeta too. But… Mom's still at home alone. I need to go back and talk to her first."
Bulma smiled warmly.
"No need to head back. I can reach Chi-Chi right now."
Her smile said it all; she already knew what the answer would be.
As the wife of Earth's savior, Bulma believed Chi-Chi would understand the importance of this decision in such a critical time. Bulma pulled out a compact remote and activated a small, hovering scout drone.
Within seconds, the device projected a shimmering image of Mount Paozu into the air.
"The outside world may be in chaos," Bulma said proudly, "But I can still handle basic long-distance communication. This little scout is part of a paired set. Mine's the 'mother drone,' and the 'child drone' is already near Mount Paozu."
"I'll guide it to find Chi-Chi now."
She explained everything with the confidence of someone who built machines that defied time itself.
Listening in, Trunks couldn't hide his amazement.
(As expected of Mom, she really did build a time machine!)
With precise control, Bulma maneuvered the child drone, and soon, the image shifted, clearly showing Mount Paozu.
As the view zoomed in, Gohan's home came into sight. But what appeared on the screen next was shocking.
Countless unconscious humans were scattered around the area surrounding the house.
These were survivors of the post-apocalyptic world, who had fled to the remote mountains to escape the relentless Androids.
By sheer coincidence, they had stumbled upon a house, one that belonged to the most powerful bloodline left on Earth.
Desperate and starving, their hearts had turned toward darker intentions.
Unluckily for them, they had picked the worst possible family to mess with.
And now, standing tall at the center of the household, was the mightiest woman left on Earth, Chi-Chi. Chi-Chi's battle power had broken past a hundred points long ago, enough to make her a dominant force in any Earth-bound battle.
For someone like her, dealing with these desperate, end-of-the-world scavengers was like brushing away flies. She sat atop a large boulder, legs crossed in a meditative stance, her aura faintly flickering with residual ki, and snapped at the unconscious gang of intruders: "You shameful cowards! You actually dared to come at me?"
But none of them answered. They were already sprawled across the ground, thoroughly defeated and passed out cold.
Just then, a tiny Ki-imbued insect-like drone, no larger than a bee, fluttered near Chi-Chi and hovered by her ear.
"Chi-Chi! Can you hear me?!" Came Bulma's voice, echoing from the drone, followed by a floating image of her appearing in a glowing orb of light projected through the enchanted construct.
"Bulma? Oh, right! Gohan went to your place the day before yesterday, didn't he? Why hasn't he come home?" Chi-Chi asked, her tone still stern from the earlier skirmish.
"I was just about to explain…" Bulma began, launching into the story of the Androids' reappearance.
As she spoke, Chi-Chi's brows furrowed deeply. Beside Bulma, Gohan could feel the tension growing and quickly rushed into view.
"Mom… everyone's gone… even the Dragon Balls… they're, " Gohan started to say, voice trembling.
But before he could finish, Chi-Chi's voice cut in, clear and commanding: "Gohan! Right now, without hesitation, go train at the Lookout!"
Gohan's eyes widened in disbelief. Bulma, on the other hand, gave a small, proud smile.
Trunks wasn't surprised at all. He already knew what her answer would be. Chi-Chi might have always dreamed of Gohan becoming a top scholar, but deep down, she had a warrior's instincts, and she knew what mattered when it counted.
Even back in the main timeline, after Goku recovered from the heart virus, Chi-Chi hadn't stopped him from charging into battle against the Androids.
It was clear, Chi-Chi was never an unreasonable woman.
And now, with Goku gone and the world teetering on the edge, there was only one person who could carry the torch of Son Goku's legacy: his son, Son Gohan.
Gohan's voice cracked as he tried to respond, "Mom…"
But Chi-Chi's expression softened. A gentle smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
"Gohan, go forward without fear. If the world is lost… then what's the point of becoming a scholar?"
She understood it clearly. When Goku was alive, she had the luxury of being a protective mother. But now, with Goku gone, her son no longer belonged to her alone; he belonged to the world.
Moved beyond words, Gohan nodded hard, eyes shining with unshed tears: "I understand! Mom!"
Chi-Chi's voice was warm as she added, "After all… You are Son Goku's son."
With that, the mystical drone dimmed and the transmission ended, her image fading into light. With his mother's blessing, Gohan turned and prepared to fly straight to the Lookout.
Just then, Bulma stepped in to stop him.
"Um… Gohan, could you take me and my family to the Lookout too? You see… we're still in West City, and I fear the Androids might track us down. Vegeta's already headed to the Lookout, and if you leave too… We'll have no protection left… And who knows how long you'll be gone training… So… I'm sorry to trouble you, Gohan."
Her words were careful, but her concern was completely reasonable. Gohan nodded right away.
With the strength he now possessed, escorting them to the Lookout was effortless.
"No problem, Bulma Obasan !" Gohan said with determination. "Grandpa Briefs, Grandma Panchy, get ready! We're heading out right away!"
