Chapter 108: The King of Slaughter
After Yang Potian's first victory in the Hell Slaughter Arena, he was ambushed as soon as he stepped outside. However, he remained unfazed; the previous fight had barely tired him, and he still had plenty of strength left.
In the two days that followed, Yang Potian killed over a hundred people. Many thought he was an easy target as a newcomer and attempted to attack him. But Yang Potian showed no mercy, wielding his Soul-Breaking Spear with lethal precision. Anyone who dared challenge him was quickly and ruthlessly cut down, with most left brutally mutilated.
Through his relentless slaughters, Yang Potian's clothing became stained a deep crimson, almost entirely soaked in blood. Over the next few days, things quieted down somewhat. He registered for a match in the Hell Slaughter Arena every three days, rarely missing one.
In just one month, he had completed nine matches, each a flawless victory. Most of his opponents had fallen to his spear, with a few killed by others attempting sneak attacks. Word of Yang Potian's reputation spread quickly throughout Slaughter City. People spoke of a formidable newcomer, one who was ruthless, precise, and unwavering. No one who dared to attack him survived.
Yang Potian even gave himself a title: "God of Slaughter."
Back at the Po Clan, the Third Elder, Yang Wuju, returned and reported to the clan leader that Yang Potian had entered Slaughter City. The entire clan was shocked, especially Yang Potian's mother, Niu Jinfeng, who was visibly distressed.
"Why would Potian go to Slaughter City? What could have driven him to do this?" she worried.
His father, Yang Zhentian, seemed to understand better. He knew his son's relentless drive to grow stronger.
Finally, the clan leader, Yang Wudi, spoke up. "My grandson Yang Potian has always pursued strength above all else. Going to Slaughter City is his way of pushing his limits and becoming stronger."
"I trust he'll make it out safely. And if he doesn't, I'll go myself, poison the entire place, and kill everyone in Slaughter City."
King of Slaughter: What?
Within a year of entering Slaughter City, Yang Potian completed 74 battles in the Hell Slaughter Arena, making him the undefeated champion with the highest number of victories.
Yang Potian displayed some of his more advanced skills, such as spear projections. In a place where spirit abilities were unusable, his spear skills were a significant advantage, both unexpected and highly effective. However, he never used his external spirit bones—these were his trump cards, reserved only for the most critical moments.
The most dangerous encounter happened after one of his arena battles when a mob of several hundred surrounded him, including several Spirit Sages and Spirit Douluo.
Although these high-level spirit masters couldn't use their abilities in Slaughter City, their physiques were enhanced from absorbing seven or eight spirit rings. Their sheer strength and resilience made them powerful adversaries.
Typically, a Spirit Douluo could easily crush a Spirit King even without using spirit abilities, given their vast physical advantages. But Yang Potian stood firm, pushing himself to the limit against these formidable foes. Here, his training with the Nine-Leaf Sword Herb paid off, allowing him to wield his Soul-Breaking Spear with the agility of a dragon, finally breaking through their defenses and killing his attackers.
Throughout the year, Yang Potian's understanding of spear techniques deepened, and he recognized that the techniques he had learned before were insufficient for a high-level spirit master. Drawing from his extensive combat experience, he refined his spear skills further, fusing the aura of slaughter with his spear techniques to create an entirely new, more powerful style.
His goal was to develop a nine-form spear technique, but he had only mastered the first two. Even with just these two forms, he was invincible in the Hell Slaughter Arena, and no one dared to ambush him any longer.
However, Yang Potian's undefeated streak had attracted the attention of the King of Slaughter. As the ruler of Slaughter City, he couldn't allow a "God of Slaughter" to rise unchecked, as it could undermine his control over the city.
One day, while Yang Potian was practicing his spear techniques, the veiled woman who had first guided him into Slaughter City appeared.
The woman bowed and spoke respectfully, "Lord God of Slaughter, the mighty King of Slaughter has summoned you."
"Lead the way. I've been meaning to meet him," Yang Potian replied, showing no hesitation.
Following the veiled woman, Yang Potian entered a strange chamber filled with an intense aura of slaughter, even stronger than in the Hell Slaughter Arena. At the room's center sat a tall man on a throne, his height reaching nearly two meters.
The man's face was pale and ageless, his features both ancient and youthful, exuding an intimidating pressure like an insurmountable mountain.
Yang Potian thought to himself, So this is Tang Chen, the former master of the Clear Sky Clan? His power is indeed terrifying. Even under the control of the Blood-Red Nine-Headed Bat King, his presence is overwhelming. If he hadn't been controlled, how strong would he have been?
Before Yang Potian could speculate further, the King of Slaughter spoke.
"God of Slaughter, judging by your weapon, you must be from the Po Clan."
"That's right, King of Slaughter. I am from the Po Clan."
"You're the first from the Po Clan to enter Slaughter City. This place is far more dangerous than you realize. I offer you a unique opportunity: pledge your loyalty to me, and I'll grant you the highest authority within Slaughter City."
Yang Potian inwardly scoffed. You, the King of Slaughter? Nothing more than a puppet of the God of Asura, without even the right to challenge your so-called 'visitors.'
"King of Slaughter, I appreciate your offer, but my goal here is to complete the hundred trials of the Hell Slaughter Arena and become the true God of Slaughter. I believe you understand what that means."
"You seek the Domain of the God of Slaughter?"
"That's correct. I came to Slaughter City for the sole purpose of obtaining the Domain of the God of Slaughter."
The King of Slaughter sneered, "God of Slaughter, achieving a hundred victories in the Hell Slaughter Arena is only the beginning if you want the Domain of the God of Slaughter. You'll also have to pass the Hell Path. That's where the real challenge lies."
Yang Potian replied calmly, "I know that two others have successfully completed the Hell Path in the last hundred years. I intend to be the third."
"Only I can open the Hell Path," the King of Slaughter said. "And I can grant people the ability to use spirit abilities. If you refuse to serve me, I can assure you that many here would jump at the chance to kill you—especially those who have no choice but to participate in the Hell Slaughter Arena."
In Slaughter City, anyone wanting to remain in the inner city must participate in at least one arena match per year. Yang Potian's winning streak had terrified many, and fewer and fewer dared to sign up. However, as their deadlines approached, they would eventually be forced to fight him.
Ignoring the King's words, Yang Potian said, "Mandrake flower, poison dragon herb, twin-life flower, ghost leaf, heart-piercing lotus, heart-wrench grass, seven-doom flower..."
"The blend of these poisons is quite impressive. It gradually drives a person to madness, turning them into a mindless killer. By drinking Bloody Marys, spirit masters are slowly being destroyed from the inside out. Even the air here is laced with it."
Yang Potian continued, "If I were to add three more toxins—soul-eroding grass, withered bone flower, and soul-devouring lotus—to the air, I doubt anyone in Slaughter City would survive."
The King of Slaughter's face darkened. "Are you threatening me? Anyone who dares disrupt the balance of Slaughter City… dies!"
Yang Potian remained composed. "King of Slaughter, I respect your authority as ruler of this place. My goal is simply to complete my trials. You'll continue your reign, and I'll move through the Hell Slaughter Arena without issue. Isn't that ideal?"
As he finished speaking, Yang Potian retrieved three herbs from his storage ring: soul-eroding grass, withered bone flower, and soul-devouring lotus.
Seeing these, the King of Slaughter's expression shifted even more, his face growing dark with rage.
Yang Potian continued, "The Po Clan is skilled in poison-making, and I've already prepared a batch of these toxins. If I don't leave this room safely, they'll be released. That would be… inconvenient for everyone."
Silence fell.
After a tense pause, the King of Slaughter finally gritted his teeth and replied, "Very well, God of Slaughter. Let's see if you can survive the trials of the Hell Slaughter Arena and become the next God of Slaughter."
"Thank you, King of Slaughter," Yang Potian said before leaving the room. He knew it was best to keep his distance from someone as powerful as the King.
As Yang Potian departed, the veiled woman entered the King of Slaughter's chamber. "My lord, did you reach an understanding with the God of Slaughter? Has he agreed to serve Slaughter City?"
The King's face was still grim. "Leave him alone. Let him undergo the trials as he wishes."
The woman looked distressed. "But my lord, allowing a God of Slaughter to rise will severely weaken Slaughter City—"
Before she could finish, the King's hand shot forward, piercing her chest, killing her instantly.
He looked down at her lifeless body. "I am the ruler here. Do not presume to instruct me."
With that, he took a long drink from his Bloody Mary, savoring it with satisfaction.
Meanwhile, outside, Yang Potian's expression was grim. In the original story, both Tang San and Hu Liena had powerful backgrounds supporting them—Tang San with Tang Hao and the Clear Sky Clan, and Hu Liena with Bibi Dong and Spirit Hall. With such formidable backing, the King of Slaughter hadn't dared interfere with them.
Today, the King had made it clear that he didn't want Yang Potian to acquire the God of Slaughter's domain.
Fortunately, Yang Potian had anticipated this. His knowledge of poison-making had allowed him to analyze the toxins in Bloody Marys and the ambient air, giving him the means to counter-threaten the King of Slaughter.
With any luck, the King would leave him alone from now on.
