Ch. 36
Chapter 36: Suicide
The moment he heard the sound, Lu Feng was the first to rush out.
Lu Feng had already changed rooms once.
After discovering that human bone in his original room, he could no longer stay there.
But the room next to his now should have been empty, so why had that scream just come from there?
There was no time to think about this.
Together with Lin You and the others, Lu Feng dashed out of his room and hurried to the next one.
The door to the neighboring room was ajar.
As they rushed inside, everyone gasped sharply—
A rope hung from the chandelier, with a crude noose around Bai Quye’s neck.
A toppled stool lay by her feet.
At that moment, the taut rope suspended Bai Quye in midair, biting deep into her neck.
Her eyes had rolled back, foam spilled from her mouth, and her body was barely moving.
Bai Quye had hanged herself!
Below her, a girl clung desperately to Bai Quye’s legs, trying with all her might to lift her up.
That girl was Shen Mengting, the English class representative of Grade 3 Class 2.
The moment Shen Mengting had discovered Bai Quye hanging, she had cried out for help and immediately tried to save her.
But her strength was too little.
She could not support Bai Quye’s weight, nor change the reality that the rope was strangling her tighter and tighter.
Seeing this, the newcomers wasted no time, rushing forward to rescue Bai Quye.
Yet as they worked, a chill spread through Lu Feng’s heart.
Judging by her condition, she had likely been hanging for some time.
At worst, her trachea might already have been crushed.
Whether she could still be saved was uncertain…
When they finally freed Bai Quye from the noose, they found, miraculously, that she still had the faintest heartbeat.
Everyone present let out a breath of relief.
“Thank goodness, we made it in time. She’s still alive…”
Lin You wiped the sweat from his forehead as he spoke.
Shen Mengting’s scream had drawn others too.
Dong Ningning, who had been staying with Bai Quye, soon rushed over.
When she saw Bai Quye unconscious on the bed, her already pale face turned ashen, and tears streamed instantly down her cheeks.
“Xiao Bai, how could you be so foolish!”
She cried as she ran to Bai Quye’s side, clutching her arm tightly, tears falling without stop.
“No matter what, you have to hold on… As long as you’re alive, there’s hope. Why would you give up like this…”
Then she turned toward Lu Feng and the others who had saved Bai Quye.
Suddenly, she dropped to her knees with a thud, bowing her head as she wept,
“Thank you… thank you for saving Xiao Bai!”
“Jiajia is already gone. If Xiao Bai left me too… I really wouldn’t know what to do anymore…”
Her sorrowful cries pierced the heart.
The others hurried to help Dong Ningning back to her feet, offering comfort.
From the moment Bai Quye was rescued, Lu Feng had stood quietly, deep in thought.
Seeing Dong Ningning’s grief, he was the first to ask,
“Wasn’t she with you all this time? How did she end up here, hanging herself?”
“…Yes, she was with me. But when I went to the cafeteria for food… in that short time, she…”
Before she could finish, Dong Ningning broke down in sobs again.
In just one morning, her close friend Yin Jia had been torn apart by the Evil Spirit before her eyes.
Now Bai Quye, unable to withstand the terror of this game, had chosen suicide…
And her boyfriend, Wu Fan, had died right at the start.
Such misery even made Lu Feng feel pity for the girl before him.
But sympathy could not erase the dissonance gnawing at him.
Looking at the dark, strangling marks around Bai Quye’s neck, Lu Feng frowned.
“It’s alright, don’t worry, we’re all here…”
Lin You patted Dong Ningning’s back, gently consoling her.
“And besides, Bai Quye is safe now. Don’t be too sad.”
“…Thank you, Lin You…”
Dong Ningning sniffled, her soft thanks trembling in her throat.
…
Bai Quye was indeed lucky.
She had chosen this empty room to hang herself, but by accident, Shen Mengting had stumbled upon her, causing her suicide to fail.
Whether this was good or bad for Bai Quye, however, remained uncertain…
But this incident confirmed something for Lu Feng—
Bai Quye was undoubtedly an ordinary player.
Evil Spirit Followers would never be attacked by the Evil Spirit, and thus would have no reason to fear death.
So then, who were the five Evil Spirit Followers?
Sitting alone in his room, Lu Feng pondered.
Recalling the chain of recent events, he felt a faint, blurry thread of thought forming in his mind.
Yet it was too vague.
If he tried to dig deeper, the idea would vanish at once.
What was he still missing…?
A low, heavy sigh echoed in the room.
…
Zhang Yifeng stood outside Dong Ningning’s door.
His fat arm lifted and fell, unsure whether to disturb her now.
At last, he knocked lightly.
A moment later, the door opened.
Dong Ningning stood there.
Her eyes were still red, her complexion pale.
With her delicate figure and refined features, she looked pitifully fragile.
The instant Zhang Yifeng saw her, a certain part of him hardened with blood.
He couldn’t help but recall that night—their tangled bodies on the bed.
That night, she had moaned shyly with passion, as though offering all of herself to him.
She had rubbed her body against every part of his, exploring him as though he were treasure.
Though Dong Ningning hadn’t been a virgin, Zhang Yifeng didn’t mind—
After all, he had liked her for a long time.
Now, with Wu Fan dead, he hadn’t expected Dong Ningning to come to him.
He hadn’t thought she would trust him so.
“Um… are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
Her reply was unexpectedly cold, though Zhang Yifeng didn’t notice.
“Is Bai Quye still unconscious?”
“Yes.”
Dong Ningning nodded blankly.
“Then… how about I stay with you?”
“No need. I want to be alone right now.”
An utterly cold rejection.
But Zhang Yifeng naively thought she was simply upset—
Like a sulking girlfriend, saying no while secretly wishing someone would stay.
“I’ll stay with you anyway,” he said with feigned tenderness.
A brief silence.
Then Dong Ningning’s face darkened.
The corner of her eye twitched, and at last, her expression broke.
“…Get lost, fat pig.”
The venom in her gaze made her seem like a completely different person from the fragile girl of moments before.
