Ch. 34
Chapter 34: Mary Shaw’s Diary
Lu Feng stared blankly at the girl in front of him, then couldn’t help but let out a bitter smile,
“Hey, at a time like this, can’t you say something lucky? It’s almost midnight……”
Yu Mo’s expression stiffened, she shook her head slightly, and let out a faint, nearly inaudible sigh,
“Straight man……”
“Huh? What did you say?”
“……Nothing.”
Yu Mo pointed at the notebook in Lu Feng’s hand,
“Don’t say those things. Let’s hurry and see what’s written inside.”
At this moment, the two of them were trapped in the pitch-dark tunnel.
Other than praying that the Evil Spirit wouldn’t come looking for them, there was nothing else they could do.
Instead of waiting idly, it was better to use the time to do something useful.
Lu Feng nodded and carefully opened the tattered notebook.
Because of the erosion of time, the paper of the notebook had long since become fragile.
Each time Lu Feng turned a page, he had to be extremely cautious.
The writing inside should have been in French.
By all rights, Lu Feng shouldn’t have been able to understand it.
Yet, somehow, he could read it fluently.
But compared to everything else, this was hardly surprising.
Opening the first page, a name appeared before the two of them—Mary Shaw.
After spending a dozen minutes quickly finishing the diary, Lu Feng finally gained a general understanding of what had once happened in this old mansion.
This woman named Mary Shaw had recorded a strange and terrifying story in her diary—
Mary Shaw and her sister Mary Jane were twins.
Their father was the owner of this manor.
Mary Shaw was born beautiful, and so was her sister.
However, her sister Mary Jane had a fatal congenital defect—
Her body bore a severe physical deformity.
Mary Jane had no legs with which to walk.
Instead, her body had grown eight arms.
To move, she could only crawl like a monster, supporting herself with those eight limbs.
The manor lord didn’t want the outside world to know that he had given birth to such a monstrous daughter.
Thus, he locked Mary Jane inside the dungeon.
If not for the fact that she was his own flesh and blood, he might have killed her long ago.
Yet Mary Shaw didn’t mind her sister’s horrifying appearance.
On the contrary, she loved her deeply.
But because she couldn’t defy her father’s authority, she could only secretly sneak into the dungeon to keep her sister company.
But it didn’t take long before her father discovered what she was doing.
Enraged, he didn’t punish Mary Shaw, but instead resolved to kill Mary Jane.
At last, one night, the manor lord ordered two servants to bring weapons into the dungeon and kill his deformed daughter.
But the result was—
Both servants died in the dungeon, while Mary Jane disappeared without a trace.
From then on, no one ever saw Mary Jane again.
But the once-peaceful mansion began to experience one strange and horrifying incident after another.
First, servants started to vanish one after another.
The missing people seemed to have evaporated into thin air, leaving no trace behind.
Then, more and more people began to show abnormal symptoms.
Those living in the manor grew pale, listless, and weaker by the day.
Some even hallucinated in broad daylight, pointing at an empty corridor while screaming hysterically—
“She’s back! Mary Jane is back!”
Not long after these terrifying phenomena began, people started dying in the manor.
Some had their necks twisted while bathing, their eyes wide with terror, as if they had seen something unspeakably horrifying in their final moments.
Others suddenly died in their sleep, screaming as they drew their last breath, crying out, “Mary Jane! Mary Jane!”
In the end, even the manor lord was not spared.
One night, without reason, he suddenly hanged himself in his room.
His blue face still carried a grotesque smile.
After the manor lord’s death, those who remained were convinced that Mary Jane had cursed the place.
Terrified, they fled from the haunted mansion.
Only the twin sister, Mary Shaw, stayed behind.
“I love you, sister…… I love everything about you. No matter what you become, I will always love you.”
That was the last line of Mary Shaw’s diary.
……
Closing the diary, Lu Feng and Yu Mo exchanged glances.
In each other’s eyes, they saw a trace of excitement.
“Looks like the Evil Spirit should be Mary Jane.” Yu Mo said.
Lu Feng nodded.
From the contents of the diary, there was no doubt that the Evil Spirit who had killed Su Qi was Mary Jane.
And the ghost who had delivered this notebook to him…… must have been her sister, Mary Shaw.
“But…… the diary didn’t mention the cause of Mary Jane’s death……”
Lu Feng stroked his chin in thought.
Had he missed something?
“……Still, at least the first mission has made progress.”
Although the story written in the diary was eerie and terrifying, for the two of them—who had personally experienced far worse—it was like someone who had seen a ghost reading a horror novel: it simply didn’t strike fear.
Because of this, their moods actually lifted a little.
“This trip wasn’t for nothing.”
Lu Feng sighed as he spoke.
Suddenly, the gentle chime of a quartz clock rang out, the “tick-tock, tick-tock” sound entering their ears.
Midnight had come.
……
Bai Quye, Dong Ningning, and Yin Jia sat together in a room, all three of them staring at the quartz clock on the wall, their faces grim.
Tick—tock—tick—tock—
The hand pointed at twelve.
The quartz clock chimed softly.
“The second day” had arrived.
The entire old mansion sank into deathly silence.
No trace of life remained, as if it were a vast tomb.
Everyone held their breath, waiting for the Evil Spirit to appear—or perhaps…… waiting for the dead to return.
At this moment, all they could do was pray that the Evil Spirit wouldn’t come for them.
“Do you…… want some tea?”
After enduring the oppressive silence for a long while, Yin Jia finally couldn’t take it and spoke.
Bai Quye nodded blankly.
Dong Ningning stood up.
Her pale face forced a smile,
“I’ll do it. I’ve studied tea ceremony.”
Yin Jia nodded without another word.
Once again, the room returned to its eerie atmosphere, broken only by the sounds of Dong Ningning handling the teaware.
Suddenly, a chill rose in Yin Jia’s heart.
She jolted, standing up abruptly, her eyes darting around the room as if searching for something.
“Xiao Yin, what’s wrong?”
Bai Quye looked at her in confusion.
“Ah…… nothing, probably just my imagination……”
Finding nothing unusual in the room, Yin Jia wiped the cold sweat from her forehead and sat back down.
“Tea’s ready.”
At that moment, Dong Ningning carried over the prepared tea, handing the cups filled with steaming liquid to the other two.
“Careful, it’s hot.” She even reminded them.
The faint fragrance of tea seemed to temporarily soothe their fear.
Yin Jia, with trembling hands, lifted the cup to her lips.
After blowing it slightly cooler, she tilted her head back to take a sip.
But in that instant, as she looked upward, she saw——
A pale, shriveled figure clinging to the ceiling like a gecko.
Its twisted head was facing her, grinning with a grotesque smile.
