Chapter 194: 193 Rookie Stands Tall
Childres revealed a touch of surprise, not expecting Li Wei's adaptability to be so quick, playing to his strengths and avoiding his weaknesses, and immediately finding a way to deal with the situation.
Involuntarily, Childres turned to look at Reed.
Reed still had a poker face, but his gaze clearly rested on Li Wei, and a small movement had betrayed his surprise as well.
Generally speaking, a running back can be plug and play, and there is no shortage of running backs who have performed well in their rookie season; but the key is, how should coaches utilize the running back's capacity?
Just like last season with the Tennessee Titans, Henry had impressive skills but wasn't used to his full potential, a sheer waste of talent.
Now, Reed's brain began to spin rapidly.
And in the ring, Bailey was furious.
If it had been a mere displeasure before, devoid of personal emotion; now, having been embarrassed in front of everyone, Bailey's anger soared instantly.
Damn it!
Getting up on his hands and knees, Bailey couldn't bother to straighten his jersey, and after a dizzying moment, he reoriented himself towards Li Wei's position.
"How about it, do you dare to go another round?"
"But if you're scared, just say so, this is just training after all, no need to take it too seriously, after all, you're a rookie, we'll go easy on you."
A fury like a sudden storm raged and snapped, but evidently, Bailey worried that Li Wei might refuse, so he used reverse psychology to corner Li Wei into a difficult position, to prevent him from walking away and losing face that he just lost, his eyes fiercely fixed on Li Wei.
And Li Wei?
This was perfect timing.
A free punching bag, a free sparring partner, couldn't be more perfect. If it were private training, he would even need to pay extra for such a sparring partner, but now one was presenting himself, Li Wei welcomed the opportunity with open arms and feet, how could he possibly refuse?
So, who is the hunter, and who is the prey?
Li Wei didn't reply, but directly stepped into the ring, lined up for the third time, ready—
Bending down, kneeling, propping one hand on the ground, his eyes bright with determination as he looked at Bailey. His entire demeanor, burning with fighting spirit, was a clear challenge.
Bailey had been worried that Li Wei would refuse, but was instead provoked by Li Wei: Damn it, this rookie made a fool of him.
Around him, the noise was deafening, with people eagerly stirring up trouble.
Reed's concerns were valid.
The media repeatedly questioned the Kansas City Chiefs' drafting decisions, and naturally, the players surrounded by this chatter could not help but be influenced. Perhaps they bore no malice towards the rookies, but subconsciously they didn't believe these new recruits were the right choice, inevitably leading to scrutiny.
Li Wei, first and foremost.
After all, he was the Top Scholar.
Now, the atmosphere was heating up by the moment, with the Defensive group cheering for Bailey, hoping he would teach the rookie a lesson; the Offensive group was rallying behind Li Wei, looking forward to a demonstration of the fearless spirit of a newbie proving himself, and the back-and-forth collisions filled the air with tension.
Watching this scene quietly, Reed couldn't help but worry, but Childres, Rubin, and all the rest were looking up at him, so he didn't show it; his gaze stayed fixed on Li Wei, knowing that if Li Wei could turn this situation around, all the problems would solve themselves.
Before, General Manager Veach had wondered how a running back, a rookie, an outsider, managed to become a leader of the Crimson Tide Storm.
Now, Reed suddenly realized that perhaps this was the moment to witness the answer – could Li Wei replicate his performance from the Crimson Tide Storm?
In front of him, Li Wei and Bailey were ready, the taut sensation of excitement spreading from their heels to their shoulders, both of them showing flashes of anger amidst profuse sweating and steaming, further igniting the atmosphere as the surrounding shouts of support exploded with an incredible, unbelievable energy.
"Tweet".
The whistle, sounding for the third time.
Li Wei had been observing, knowing he was at a disadvantage. Purely in terms of size and strength, he had no business confronting Bailey head-on. If he wanted to create a confrontation, much less upset the status quo, he had to think with his brain, to be not only calm but also careful.
```
—— Knuckles.
Still.
It was in the blink of an eye that Li Wei caught the detail and immediately deduced Bailey's intent:
Hold the line.
If Bailey remained motionless, he would be like a wall, and for Li Wei, breaking through or evading a tackle would be nearly an impossible task.
In a game, Li Wei would use a change of direction to shake off Bailey, breaking through from the side; but this was training, a one-on-one bullfight, and there was simply not enough space for evasion.
Aside from a head-on breakthrough, there was no choice. But by doing so, Bailey would have the innate advantage, relying on his size and strength to claim an unbeatable position.
So, what to do?
Li Wei wasn't flustered, in fact, he immediately realized that Bailey's steadiness, although seemingly defensive, was essentially Bailey's conservatism.
Bailey hadn't fully utilized his size and strength advantage, but instead tried to hold the baseline. The moment this thought emerged, he had handed the initiative over to his opponent.
Li Wei knew what he had to do.
Push off, start, sprint.
In his field of vision he could see Bailey, like a mountain of flesh stretching before him, cutting off all sight, his arms reaching forward, ready early on to meet Li Wei's charge,
But instead, Li Wei bent his knees, lowered his center of gravity, even more than usual.
Usually, the position to aim for a tackle is at the waist, the most appropriate spot to exert force; but now, Li Wei dropped to the level of Bailey's knees.
The answer had emerged——
It wasn't to collide, but to tackle.
Li Wei took the initiative, when usually it's the players on defense who tackle the offensive players. Now it was an offensive player tackling a defensive one, and lowering his center of gravity.
Crack. He gripped Bailey's knees.
Bailey panicked. Everything happened too fast. He hadn't anticipated that Li Wei would go for a tackle, let alone that Li Wei would lower his center of gravity to tackle at the knees. Bailey's arms, prepared to block Li Wei's charge, now flailed helplessly like inflatable tube men outside a supermarket, utterly useless.
Boom. Exerting force, colliding, pushing forward.
Then, Li Wei hoisted Bailey up like a wrestler, over his shoulder, tossing and dropping him.
Ah!
Ah! Ah! Ah!
Bailey landed on his back in a 360-degree arc like a sandbag, lying immobile on the ground, immediately swallowed by humiliation.
Whoosh.
The entire field erupted into a roar.
Whether it was the offensive group or the defensive group, everyone was stunned, even Mahomes gaped in disbelief at what Li Wei had just accomplished——
A shoulder throw. It was actually a shoulder throw.
Reed's shoulders slackened slightly. One had to admit, Li Wei's performance was unexpectedly outstanding, perfectly adapting to professional-level confrontation. Just as he was about to breathe a sigh of relief, an unexpected turn happened again.
Bailey flipped over, clumsily but swiftly standing up, burning with anger and embarrassment. Now he really lashed out in fury, clenching his fist and charging at Li Wei.
The surrounding players and coaches had not foreseen this scene, hadn't had time to stop it, and even the cries of alarm got stuck, hearts jammed in throats.
Damn!
