Doctor Hailey

Chapter 6

The brain, the place that controls all the organs of the human body.

In her previous life, she was an authority on brain surgery. She also had experience in epilepsy surgery.

“Usually we start with drug therapy, but if the seizures are not controlled, we also do a lot of surgery.

But no matter how skilled she was in her former life, brain surgery itself was impossible in the Empire.

Mom can’t even have an operation right now.

She looked down at Faello for a moment.

Blue eyes, brown hair, and a half-covered face with a beard.

He looked like a middle-aged man similar to Hethos and definitely resembled him.

“Is he family?”

“He’s my younger brother.”

As expected.

She nodded her head.

It’s just a guess, but it looks like epileptic seizures.

Confirming the diagnosis in a situation where brain MRI imaging is impossible was not an easy task.

“Do you have anyone in your family, like a father, mother, grandfather or grandmother, who has had similar symptoms?”

Hailey didn’t press Hethos for an answer.

If this were Korea, this would be a question about the patient’s family history.

Hailey glanced subtly at Hethos.

How would a question about family history of epilepsy be received?

“It’s like asking who in your family was a demon.”

How much time has passed?

“Our bloodlines are different. We were orphans.”

Hethos’ voice cracked.

“I see.”

Her head felt heavy. Her chest was tight.

Hailey stifled a boiling sigh and looked at Hethos.

“I found a better teacher than my parents. Luckily, I had good skills, so I didn’t tarnish the teacher’s reputation and was able to feed my brother without starving.”

“I have heard of Hethos’ reputation.”

She said.

“I heard that Hethos made all the top ten swords on the continent.”

“So maybe the demon got inside my brother?”

“What do you mean?”

Making swords has nothing to do with my brother’s epilepsy.

Hailey smiled.

“Because of the sword I made with my own hands… many people died.”

Hethos looked down at his palm with a broad grin.

A blacksmith’s palm covered with calluses.

“I made a lot. If you collected the blood spilled on the swords I made, it would form a river.”

His shoulders twitched.

“God surely punished me. If I hadn’t made the sword… if I had lived modestly, like making farm tools, maybe my brother’s soul wouldn’t have been possessed by a demon…”

“Don’t talk nonsense.”

She looked into Hethos’ eyes.

“Faello is just sick. Not possessed by a demon.”

“Miss.”

Hethos’ gaze wavered.

“Faello is not possessed by a demon. Did I say that just to scare off the jailer?”

Her voice was cold.

Hailey frowned at him, her lips tightly sealed.

“That seems to be the case.”

She shook her head.

She couldn’t help but be frustrated by his ignorance.

How many people have been sacrificed for ridiculous reasons like demons, witches, and the like?

It’s understandable that there’s no equipment. It’s inevitable that medicine is not advanced.

But to accuse patients of being possessed by demons or cursed by witches, and to exploit them under the guise of prayers and selling useless holy water was something she couldn’t understand.

She trembled with clenched fists.

She wiped her chest several times and took a deep breath.

“I am telling you one more time, Faello is definitely not possessed by a demon. Do you understand? It’s epilepsy…”

“What?”

She quickly raised her head.

“Another name for the disease is epilepsy.”

“Epilepsy?”

“A seizure is…”

“Yes?”

“So epilepsy seizures are…”

Hailey fell silent.

“The shaking symptoms in Faello’s body!”

Hethos nodded as if he finally understood.

When explaining to a patient’s guardian, it’s natural to tailor the explanation to the patient.

Stories about demons, witches and such made them angry.

“Faello has symptoms due to epilepsy. There are several causes.”

“A disease?”

“Yes. Simply put, it refers to repeated seizures caused by problems in the human brain.”

“The brain…”

“The head. There’s a little problem in the head. There are different causes, but the treatments are similar.”

Hethos stood up abruptly.

“Can you expel demons from Faello’s body?”

No, what if he even starts calling the patient’s family demons? Just calling it a disease is enough.

Hailey rubbed her forehead.

“Hethos, what’s in Faello’s body is not a demon, it’s a disease. And I’m not a priest, I’m a doctor.”

Hearing this, Hethos knelt down in front of Hailey.

“Please sit comfortably.”

She said.

“Anyway, the treatment for epilepsy includes drug therapy and surgical treatment.”

“Are there drugs?”

“Yes.”

Hailey sighed deeply.

“When was the first seizure?”

“It was when I was young.”

Hailey’s eyes narrowed at Hethos’ answer.

The patient’s symptoms seemed to have lasted longer than she had thought.

“How often does it happen?”

“When I was young it happened quite often, but after a certain age the frequency decreased significantly.”

“Can you be more specific?”

“After I turned twenty, it happens about three or four times a month. When I was young… it was two or three times a day at worst, usually once every ten days.”

Hailey nodded. Faello was relatively lucky.

Well, in this world, just having epilepsy without being accused of being possessed by a demon is pretty lucky.

Hethos probably hadn’t expected to have an epileptic for a brother.

Hailey had been planning her mother’s surgery for a long time.

Hethos was the first button she had to button for the operation.

Surgical skills? Medical knowledge? They weren’t important in the current reality.

The minimum requirements for the operation had to be created first.

“But you’re still pretty lucky.”

Hailey said.

“Am I?”

“As soon as we get out of here, we’ll start medical treatment. Surgical treatment will have to be evaluated later. We need many tests, but the equipment… is lacking.”

There is still no testing or surgical equipment in the Empire.

“Equipment? If it’s about making things, I can help as well.”

“That is fortunate. We needed Hethos’ help.”

There was warmth in her voice.

She couldn’t even dream of surgery because she couldn’t make a proper scalpel.

Now the person who could make a scalpel was standing right in front of her.

“I’ll help you with everything. What should I start with?”

“A scalpel. We need a scalpel first.”

Hethos’ expression stiffened.
