Doctor and His Glamorous Sister-in-Law

Chapter 45: Really!

A single sentence, "You're sick."

The words instantly shattered the lighthearted atmosphere. The room fell silent, and everyone stared at Liu Ergou in disbelief.

Li Dafa's expression turned particularly ugly.

The men who had just been clinking glasses with Liu Ergou slammed their cups down and began to berate him.

"Hey, what's with you? Do you even know how to talk? Can't you say something pleasant for once?"

"That's right! If your parents never taught you how to speak, we don't mind teaching you a lesson or two! Let's have a civil conversation!"

"Hurry and apologize to Third Master Zhang! And watch your mouth from now on. Don't say such baseless things!"

Liu Ergou seemed to not hear their scolding at all.

To him, these people were just insignificant side characters. They could say whatever they wanted—what did it have to do with him? He was playing a completely different game now.

Third Master Zhang, who had been about to leave, didn't get angry at Liu Ergou's words. Instead, he slowly turned his head to look at him.

However, his gaze was no longer gentle. It was now filled with a piercing sharpness that made everyone in the room instinctively flinch and hold their tongues.

Everyone knew that Third Master Zhang was now truly angry. If Liu Ergou couldn't give a reasonable explanation today, then no matter how good he was at fighting, he wouldn't be walking out of this room in one piece.

Facing Third Master Zhang's sharp gaze, Liu Ergou remained unintimidated. He even offered a faint smile.

"What? The great Third Master Zhang didn't even graduate from elementary school? Is that why you can't understand what I'm saying?"

"It means exactly what it sounds like. You're sick."

With that, Liu Ergou stood up, looking directly into Third Master Zhang's piercing eyes. "Third Master, I'll be blunt."

"Let me ask you: lately, have you been feeling discomfort in your stomach? Have you had trouble going to the bathroom, sometimes finding blood afterward? Have you even coughed up blood on occasion?"

At Liu Ergou's words, Third Master Zhang's pupils constricted, a look of shock flashing in his eyes. "How... how do you know all that?" he asked.

He had been experiencing exactly what Liu Ergou described. Going to the bathroom was difficult, and there was blood afterward. One night, a cough in his sleep brought up a mouthful of blood, scaring him so badly that he immediately went to the hospital for a check-up. The results were due in a few days; in fact, they should be ready today or tomorrow.

Looking at Liu Ergou now, Zhang San no longer dared to underestimate him. His entire demeanor changed as he asked politely, "Brother Ergou, may I ask... are you a doctor?"

However, Liu Ergou didn't answer right away. Instead, he instructed, "Put your hand over your stomach and press down. Hard."

Puzzled, Zhang San still did as he was told. Just then, Liu Ergou grabbed a large soup bowl from the table and set it in front of him. Confused, Zhang San pressed firmly on his stomach.

A sharp pain shot through him, followed by a sickening surge rising in his throat. He gagged, and a mouthful of fresh blood sprayed directly into the large soup bowl.

The scene stunned everyone present, including Zhang San himself.

With a trembling voice, he asked, "Ergou... Brother Ergou, what's... what's wrong with me?"

"What sickness do I have? Why am I coughing up blood? This is terrifying!"

As Zhang San spoke, the others finally snapped out of their stupor. They rushed forward to surround him, fussing with concern.

Zhang San was in no mood for their sympathy. He waved his hand, dismissing them.

He turned back to Liu Ergou. "Brother Ergou, if I'm sick, just tell me straight. Stop beating around the bush. If you keep this up, even if I'm not sick, you'll scare me into an illness. If I am sick, you're going to scare me to death!"

But when Liu Ergou looked at Zhang San, he simply shook his head.

That simple shake of the head made Zhang San's already anxious heart leap into his throat, as if he might cough it up at any moment.

"Brother Ergou, stop keeping me in suspense! Just tell me!" Zhang San urged.

Liu Ergou let out a long sigh.

"Third Master, you need to brace yourself for what I'm about to say."

"You have cancer. Late-stage stomach cancer. It's incurable by any hospital. If you still don't get it, let me put it more simply: your days are numbered."

Hearing this, Zhang San's eyes widened in sheer disbelief.

"Impossible... absolutely impossible!"

"Brother Ergou, you must have made a mistake! A misdiagnosis!"

As he spoke, Zhang San sank into a chair, his face grave. "You have to understand, I get a full check-up every single year!"

"I just had one last month! The report said I was perfectly fine!"

"How could this be possible? How could I suddenly get cancer in just one month, and so severe that it's already in the final stage? If you'd said it was in the early stages, I might have believed you!"

Yet, Liu Ergou simply shook his head again.

"I wouldn't know about that. You'll have to ask yourself, Third Master. I'm a doctor, not a fortune-teller."

Zhang San opened his mouth to argue, but his phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the screen—it was the hospital. He didn't hesitate and quickly answered.

"Hello!"

"Yes, it's me!"

"The report is out? Go ahead, I'm listening."

As he spoke, Zhang San switched his phone to speaker mode.

The voice of a doctor came through the speaker. "Mr. Zhang, I'm afraid I have some very bad news."

"After a detailed examination, we've determined that you have stomach cancer. And it's in the advanced stages."

"The cancer is developing with exceptional speed. We recommend immediate hospitalization for treatment, and you should be prepared for the possibility of emergency surgery."

As soon as the doctor finished speaking, the entire private room plunged into silence. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

The doctor on the other end said a few more words before hanging up.

All that remained was a room full of dumbfounded people and one person—Liu Ergou—who wore a completely unfazed expression.
