Doctor and His Glamorous Sister-in-Law

Chapter 227: Can't Hold One's Tongue

The previously self-assured woman in the business suit was stunned into silence by Liu Ergou's words.

Liu Ergou wasn't finished. "Of course, you could also lease the wasteland in the next village over," he continued. "That's your freedom, after all. I can't stop you! But I feel I should remind you, there's no shortage of wasteland in the five or six villages around here. To lease so much of it just to let it sit idle… Are you out of your mind?"

The woman in the business suit was so flustered she couldn't speak. She had been so focused on finding some leverage against Liu Ergou that she hadn't considered the consequences. In the end, she had only managed to shoot herself in the foot. Her composure shattered completely.

Seeing her standing there in stunned silence, Liu Ergou waved his hand dismissively. "Alright, if there's nothing else, you can leave. I have things to do, so I won't see you out."

Upon hearing this, the woman snapped out of her daze. She rushed forward and, to his astonishment, knelt directly in front of Liu Ergou.

This time, it was Liu Ergou's turn to be dumbfounded. He never expected this woman to be so decisive, dropping to her knees without a moment's hesitation and giving him no time to prepare.

For the woman, only one thought remained: her boss's illness could not be delayed any longer. Any further delay would be a death sentence. She cast aside all her pride, determined to beg the man before her to treat her boss.

"Please, Mr. Liu!" she pleaded. "You have to treat my boss! His illness can't wait any longer. It's already very serious, I'm begging you!"

As she spoke, she broke down, tears streaming down her face in great, heaving sobs. It was a pitiful sight.

Yet, Liu Ergou's expression remained impassive, his gaze as cold as ice. Looking down at the kneeling woman, he said frostily, "I'll say this one more time. I'm just a simple villager. I don't know anything about medicine. Do you understand? If you do, then leave. If you don't, you can keep kneeling for all I care. I have other things to do."

With that, Liu Ergou turned to go back into his room. But just then, Xu Yulan, who had been busy inside, emerged. Seeing the woman in her business suit kneeling on the ground, she felt a pang of pity.

She gently tugged on Liu Ergou's sleeve and whispered, "Er Gou, why don't you just help her? It's not easy for a woman, and look, she's on her knees begging you!"

The moment the words left her mouth, Liu Ergou shot her a stern glare. Xu Yulan immediately realized she had overstepped and clamped her mouth shut, not daring to say another word.

Seeing that Liu Ergou remained unmoved, the woman clenched her jaw, lowered herself onto all fours, and began to crawl toward him.

"Please, Mr. Liu, you have to save my boss!" she pleaded as she moved. "If it's a matter of money, I'll pay the difference myself! As long as you save my boss, I'll give you anything you want... even myself!"

The ground in Liu Ergou's yard was rough dirt. After just a few feet of crawling, the woman's flesh-toned stockings were shredded, and her knees were scraped and bloody.

Seeing this, Liu Ergou sighed helplessly. Things had gone too far; he felt he had to give in.

"Alright, alright, I give in! You win!" he said. "Your boss's condition will hold for a while longer. Give me your phone number. I'll contact you when I have time. Keep your phone on 24/7. If you miss my call, it's not my problem!"

Hearing Liu Ergou finally agree, the woman was overjoyed. Ignoring the stinging pain in her knees, she scrambled to her feet, grabbed his hand, and began thanking him profusely.

"Thank you, Mr. Liu! Thank you so much!" She then offered him the briefcase. "This is the deposit. Please accept it. And please, I'm begging you, treat my boss as soon as you can!"

Then, she fished a business card out of her pocket and handed it to him as well.

This time, Liu Ergou didn't refuse. He took the briefcase and the card. Seeing him accept her things, the woman in the business suit turned to leave.

But she had only taken a few steps when Liu Ergou called out, "Wait a moment!"

To the woman, those words sounded like a death knell, and her face instantly drained of color. In an instant, countless fears raced through her mind, all converging on a single, terrible conclusion: he had changed his mind. He was going to refuse her.

Forcing herself to remain calm, the woman turned back, her voice trembling. "Mr. Liu... is there something else?"

Seeing her terrified expression, Liu Ergou simply asked, "I have one question. Was this trip your idea, or did your superiors send you?"

The woman didn't understand the question, but she felt a wave of relief. Thank god, he hasn't gone back on his word.

She answered, "My superiors sent me here, but begging you for help… that was my own idea."

Liu Ergou nodded, signaling that she could go. Without another moment of hesitation, the woman turned, hurried back to her car, and drove away, vanishing from sight.

As Liu Ergou turned to take the briefcase inside, Hu Jing, who had been watching from the side, quickly stepped in his path.

"Um, Er Gou," she began, giggling foolishly, "you see, now that you have the funds… could I maybe get my share...?"

Watching her giggle, Liu Ergou rolled his eyes and replied bluntly, "Tsk. A certain *someone* was just trying to solicit an investment from another party right in front of me. That clearly means she doesn't need my money. So why on earth would I lend her any? Right, *someone*?"

He deliberately emphasized the word "someone."

Hearing this, Hu Jing nearly burst into tears.

It's over. It's all my fault. I finally secured his help, only to lose it all because of my stupid mouth. She was sick with regret, feeling her entire world crumble around her.
