Chapter 2 What are you talking about, you little bunny?
"Er Gou, you…" The woman outside hadn't expected him to be so strong. Compared to her own husband, it was like the difference between heaven and earth.
"Auntie, I already told you it wasn't convenient," Liu Ergou said, his face flushed with embarrassment. "But you insisted on coming in."
"So you were just going to let your auntie stand out in the rain?" the woman shot back with a disdainful look. But she couldn't help swallowing hard.
"Auntie, please come in," Liu Ergou said helplessly.
After the woman entered, she sat by the fire and began to take off her wet clothes, placing them on the rack to dry. The spring rain was chilling to the bone. As she warmed herself, she shivered, and the large mounds, barely contained by a white bra, wobbled with the movement. The two soft globes appeared starkly before Liu Ergou's eyes.
Looking at her, images of Xu Yulan flooded his mind. But I have to admit, this old broad is pretty good-looking. And her daughter… she's even more stunning. A real match for Xu Yulan.
"Er Gou, you'd better hide that 'club' of yours," the woman said with a glance. "Shoving it in your auntie's face like that. Have you no shame?"
"Auntie, that's a fine way to talk," Liu Ergou said, his patience wearing thin. "I do you a favor by letting you in, and now you're complaining?"
These small wooden huts in the mountains had all been built by the Liu Family. It wasn't just his family; other villagers heading up the mountain would also stay the night sometimes.
"I'm your elder," the woman retorted. "What's wrong with me saying a thing or two to you?"
Her attitude grated on Liu Ergou. She'd always been like this, looking down her nose at everyone just because her husband was the village head.
WHOOSH. The rain outside abruptly stopped. This rain was truly fickle, arriving and departing in an instant.
"Auntie, since the rain has stopped, let's head down the mountain," Liu Ergou said with clear dissatisfaction as he put his clothes back on. "We don't want anyone to see us and get the wrong idea about what we were doing in here."
"Look at you, getting all flustered," the woman sneered. "Fine! Let's go down the mountain!"
Of all the families in the village, she looked down on Liu Ergou the most. In truth, everyone was poor, and Liu Ergou was the village's only doctor, so she had no reason to act this way. But his real crime was daring to have ideas about my daughter! If I hadn't found out early, my beautiful girl, who's destined to marry into the city, would have been ruined by him!
CLICK.
The door opened. Liu Ergou shouldered his carrying basket and headed down the mountain with the woman.
Seeing them leave, Xu Yulan, who was hiding behind the woodpile, finally let out a sigh of relief.
But they hadn't gone far when the woman's foot slipped. She tumbled down the slick, muddy slope, falling several meters before landing sprawled on the ground.
"Ouch… Ouch! It's killing me," Wu Guifang cried out, rubbing her backside in agony.
Her trousers were torn, revealing several gashes on her leg from sharp stones. In the fall, she had also slammed her tailbone hard against a rock.
Liu Ergou had no desire to deal with her. He simply kept the basket on his back and continued cautiously down the mountain. His thoughts were with his sister-in-law, praying she would be careful on her way down and not fall like Wu Guifang.
"Er Gou, what are you doing?" Wu Guifang shouted, growing anxious when she saw him walking away. "You see your auntie has fallen! Aren't you going to hurry over and help me up?"
"Auntie, weren't you just looking down on me a minute ago?" Liu Ergou shot back with a glance. "Why would you want my help now?"
"You little brat, what did you just say?" Wu Guifang shrieked. "Get over here and help me up!"
"You should just wait here, Auntie," Liu Ergou said as he started to walk away again. "I'll go down the mountain and get Hui Hui. She should be able to get here and rescue you in a few hours."
Being yelled at for no reason had already stoked a fire in Liu Ergou's gut, and this old woman's atrocious attitude only fanned the flames.
"Liu Ergou, you get your ass back here!" Wu Guifang screeched, her voice laced with panic. "Do you hear me?"
"No," Liu Ergou snapped, his own temper flaring.
Xu Yulan, following a short distance behind them, heard the argument and grew worried, but she didn't dare get any closer.
"Liu Ergou, if you don't come over and help me down this mountain, believe me, I'll have your clinic shut down! Who do you think you are? How dare you get so insolent with me? And you, you pauper, you actually dare to have ideas about my Hui Hui. Let me tell you something! My Hui Hui is going to marry a man from the city. She's a golden phoenix, not some prize a country bumpkin like you can ever hope to touch!" Wu Guifang's words grew more and more vicious.
Liu Ergou's face turned to ice. He spun around and walked back toward her.
"You want my help, is that right?"
Thinking he had caved, Wu Guifang nodded. "Yes! Hurry up and help me! The pain is killing me."
Liu Ergou yanked her up from the ground, only to immediately let go, sending her crashing back down onto her bruised backside. Already in agony, fresh tears of pain welled up in Wu Guifang's eyes.
"You worthless brat, Liu Ergou!" Wu Guifang shrieked, her voice echoing through the forest. "How dare you trick me!"
"Auntie, does it hurt a lot here... and here?" Liu Ergou asked, pointing to several spots on his own body.
"Yes…" Wu Guifang gasped, the pain momentarily silencing her sharp tongue. "It's killing me!"
"When you fell just now, you likely fractured a bone and injured your tailbone," Liu Ergou said with a cold sneer. "If you don't get immediate treatment, you'll be bedridden within three days. You'll become a cripple, unable to use your legs."
He was, of course, making it all up. Wu Guifang's condition wasn't nearly that severe; it was just a bad sprain. But who could say otherwise? He was the only doctor in the village. He had learned medicine from his grandfather since he was a child, and his grandfather had been renowned back in his day, with people coming from all the surrounding villages for treatment. As the one who inherited his grandfather's skills, Liu Ergou naturally had an excellent reputation himself.
"What?" Wu Guifang's face went white with terror. "A cripple?"
She believed him completely. It was precisely because of his well-known medical skill that she didn't have the slightest doubt he was telling the truth. Besides, the places he pointed to were indeed hurting her something fierce.
"Er Gou, please, you have to take a look at me," Wu Guifang begged, her voice frantic. "I don't want to be a cripple!"
"And why should I treat you?" Liu Ergou sneered back. "You still owe my family three hundred and nineteen yuan in medical fees from the last two years."
This old biddy was always pulling the seniority card. Every time she came for treatment, she'd remind him she was the village head's wife and tell him to put it on her tab. But years had passed, and she'd never paid a single yuan. If it weren't for her daughter, Liu Ergou would have stormed over to her house to make a scene long ago.
"Er Gou, I'll pay! I promise, I'll pay as soon as we get down the mountain!" Wu Guifang said urgently. "Please, just take a look at me first!"
"Hmph. You want me to treat you? Fine," Liu Ergou said. "Take off your pants."
