Chapter 430: Climbing the Real Mountain
At noon, four people walked together on their way home from school.
The warm sun poured down, feeling especially comfortable on their shoulders.
Jiang Nian squinted his eyes and started talking casually.
"When I was young, I saw my dad smoking and was curious, so I stole a cigarette. I lit it up and took a puff, and my mind went blank. I passed out immediately."
Hearing this, Xu Shuang's gaze became slightly serious.
"So scary?"
"Yeah, when I woke up, mom was holding me and crying. She kept scolding my dad for being so rough."
Haha!
Xu Shuang couldn't help but laugh out loud.
"Got knocked out?"
Jiang Nian didn't reply, lazily walking forward. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a certain gaze and felt somewhat puzzled, turning his head to look.
"Hmm?"
But then saw Xie Zhihao occasionally turning his head in this direction, his gaze somewhat sharp. A hint of dissatisfaction was evident on his face.
Jiang Nian examined himself, thinking to himself that he hadn't done anything.
Weird.
He hadn't even thought about asking for Xu Shuang's WeChat; he was just walking the same path. Feeling a bit bored, he looked for a normal person to chat with.
Xu Shuang saw Jiang Nian not speaking, so she also followed his gaze.
Just then, Xie Zhihao was chatting with Xu Yuanshan, habitually turning his head and looking over... only to meet two gazes.
Nicely aligned, both met eyes.
Jiang Nian's expression remained normal. He was merely chatting casually, with nothing secretive or any ulterior motive.
Xu Shuang also showed no expression; she was only worried about her foolish brother not getting the real card, crying at home for three days and nights.
Crying wasn't a big deal, being cheated out of money wasn't either.
From childhood to now, Xu Yuanshan had suffered countless losses. Fortunately, their family never cared about these things, just afraid of annoying her.
Once he gets the card, he'd just go home.
She had no feelings for Jiang Nian or her brother's playmate Xie Zhihao, only treating them like gray NPCs.
However, Xie Zhihao suddenly felt awkward, his face reddening.
"Cough cough..."
Child, if you're sick, go get treated.
"Haha, you all seem to be having fun." Xie Zhihao showed a sunny smile, "What were you just talking about?"
Xu Yuanshan was unhappy; talking and two-timing the conversation.
Jiang Nian withdrew his gaze, saying nothing. Repeating a joke twice would make him look like a fool in others' eyes.
Therefore, the question passed to the next person.
Xu Shuang clearly didn't want to repeat the joke again, and she thought she wasn't as funny as Jiang Nian, so she said lightly.
"Nothing much."
Unexpectedly shut down, Xie Zhihao felt even more awkward.
"Alright... okay."
Jiang Nian felt nothing. He was merely the 'Divine Hand' in drawing cards, never said he'd provide company for chat.
Nohara Shinohiro, we're just walking the same path.
The awkward atmosphere lasted until they reached a boutique store's entrance. The store sold small trinkets and card collections.
"Welcome, feel free to look around~"
The young female clerk stood by, smiling broadly, as she made room for them to pass. Her gaze scanned the three men and one woman before her.
Finally, her gaze landed on Xu Shuang and Jiang Nian.
For no particular reason, she was in a good mood.
"How does this work?" Xu Yuanshan already looked nervous, breathing heavily and wide-eyed, "How long will it take?"
The female clerk was bewildered, what on earth?
A second later, she saw them heading to the card section. Without worries, she realized they were card enthusiasts, so it was fine.
If they don't win, they'll wait to checkout.
"Begin your performance then." Xie Zhihao deliberately said, as if he were in control, "We'll be watching."
Jiang Nian didn't bother listening. Once this transaction was done, he'd go eat.
With the 'jackpot' open, his eyes scanned the pile of cards, relying on his sixth sense to pick a pack that caught his eye.
With a snap, he turned and tossed it to Xu Yuanshan.
"Go checkout."
"Huh?" Xu Yuanshan froze.
Just this!
"Do I need to do anything else?" He scratched his head, conflicted, "Should we buy a few more packs since buying one is cheaper."
"No need, trust people." Xie Zhihao smiled, reassuring, "If he says to checkout, then it must be right."
Jiang Nian: "… You two, Guo Degang?"
Xu Shuang watched the whole time, with no expression on her face. Reflecting on his card-picking moves seemed he hadn't made any marks.
Perhaps, there's an inside story?
Yeah, should be.
With a beep, the payment was completed.
Xu Yuanshan suddenly came to his senses, turning sharply.
"Wait, why am I paying?"
"Then I'll scan you." Jiang Nian pretended to take out his phone.
"No no, that's unnecessary." Xu Yuanshan didn't mind the money, interrupting, "I was just casually asking."
"Alright." Jiang Nian pushed his phone back into his pocket, "I didn't truly intend to pay, just casually taking out my phone."
Xu Yuanshan: "…"
This guy is truly petty.
Xie Zhihao surprisingly felt great happiness; Jiang Nian committed a huge faux pas, being stingy and petty.
As everyone knows, such behavior is very unattractive to girls.
Store entrance.
"Open it up and take a look, I'm in a hurry to eat." Jiang Nian prompted, his eyes fixed on the bag of cards.
"Oh, okay."
Xu Shuang hadn't paid much attention to the cards; most of the time, she looked elsewhere. Occasionally, her gaze passed over Jiang Nian, then slowly moved away.
She was intrigued by Jiang Nian's antics, vaguely curious.
The clerk clearly didn't recognize Jiang Nian, even if he was pretending. His acting needn't be so superb; he could pursue acting instead.
Without collusion, how could there be an inside story, unless he drew directly?
Xu Yuanshan looked tense, as he opened the packet. He realized the pack of cards was factory-sealed, his hands trembling.
Aren't we friends, was the inside story this deep?
Jiang Nian stood by, glancing at the time on his phone, dissatisfied with the slow behavior of his clueless younger brother.
