Chapter 614: Cube
After stabilizing Zach's mood, they brought in Julius again and talked about what Zoe had missed and Zach's plan. Since they had planned it without Zoe, she didn't have a role to play, which was just as well. The less interaction she had with Bartuk, the better.
He had only won last time because she didn't know about divine energy and underestimated his attacks. She wouldn't make that mistake twice.
But keeping the Underworld and the cornerstone safe was more important than settling a grudge, so she would stay in the sixth layer and just watch and amass her strength while everyone else had fun. At least she wouldn't be alone since Julius stayed by her side.
After making sure that Zoe was fine and on board with the plan, which she was, Zach left with his familiars. As they walked through the Underworld toward the tunnel again, Zach couldn't help but glance curiously as Vidri kept working on the metal cube.
It was finally starting to look more like a treasure than a hunk of indestructible junk.
He couldn't wait until it was done and listen to Vidri's explanation.
"Here, Master," Vidri said, handing it to him.
He got what he wanted sooner than expected. Zach's eyebrows rose.
"It's done already?" He asked as he grabbed and inspected the cube. When he used his Eyes of Truth, he could see a dazzling array of fine, overlapping lines covering the cube's exterior and interior. They seemed to be etched into the very core of the blue-striped cube.
"It only took this long because I had to make some changes to make full use of the divine energy, Master," Vidri explained. It wasn't a big deal that she had made it into something useful in that short amount of time.
"So, what does it do?" Zach asked as he hung it around his neck again.
"It's a storage of sorts, Master. It stores any and all excess energy you give off or that is in your presence, including kinetic and heat energy. It takes the body heat you radiate and stores it. It takes the kinetic energy from movements that would have made it bounce against your body otherwise and stores it. Strands of ambient energy that come within its reach end up inside it. Excess energy that your body regenerates when it's full also gets drawn in and stored." Vidri's explanation was pretty simple. Intangible forces were stored within the medallion.
"What happens to the stored energies?"
"They are at your disposal, Master. You can tap into and direct them however you wish."
Zach's eyes widened, and he looked at the medallion. He prodded it with his mind similarly to how he inspected his body when he figured out how Surge's backlash worked.
It was empty right now, but he could slowly feel it gain a little from the heat of the fingertips holding the medallion.
There was just one thing that made Zach frown.
"How much can it hold?" The energy that had already entered it was next to nothing. It was very little. But it still gave Zach an idea of the available space inside. Or rather, it should have given him an idea of the available space inside. Right now, it felt like it was bottomless.
"Thanks to the divine energy, Master, it should take about a star to fill it."
"What?" Zach asked instantly before he could even think about the answer. His feeling that it was a bottomless storage wasn't inaccurate.
"How much energy is there in a star?" He asked with a frown.
"That depends on the star, Master. They come in different sizes and compositions."
"I see." He didn't see. He was starting to feel that unless Vidri wanted to explain something, it was difficult to get a clear explanation.
"I guess that means I don't have to worry about this sucker reaching max capacity anytime soon," Zach eventually said, dropping the cube back into his shirt again.
"That's right, Master." Vidri nodded. Divine energy really was a great material.
"Was this what it was supposed to be at first?" Zach asked. Vidri had said its capacity was thanks to the divine energy. Had it been rendered a useless but indestructible piece of junk because she didn't have access to divine energy when she first made it?
"No…When I first made it, I was, as I said, ambitious. I wanted to make something great, Master. But I didn't have a clear image in mind. I just created something using the various techniques and materials at my disposal. Eventually, I ended up with a jumbled mess that my tools couldn't scratch anymore. I guess, in that way, it could be considered a success. It was a perfectly indestructible piece of metal. If someone good enough used it, they could use it to block any attack. But…"
"...If they were good enough to use such a tiny piece of metal as a shield, they probably wouldn't need it in the first place."
"Exactly, Master."
"Is it still indestructible?"
"As good as, Master."
Zach nodded. There was probably more to it. But an answer as short as that meant Vidri was done explaining. Zach closed his eyes while walking and felt the presence of the cube at the base of his throat.
He was excited to see what would become of it in the future once it accumulated enough energy.
But a star…
Weren't they just lumps of light in the night sky? How much energy could be in one?
He considered asking Ra, who had actually visited the starry sky, but it wasn't important. He had something else on his mind that took priority.
It was still a while until it was time to officially get everything moving between the two continents. Until then, Zach wanted to get stronger and try something out.
He sat down cross-legged outside the tunnel and focused on his world essence energy.
It was finally time to try out the method he and his familiars had devised. Before doing that, though, he asked Mandra to tell Vidri about it. She was smart, and this seemed like something she could help them improve.
Zach spread his world essence energy around his body, making sure to cover every nook and cranny. Then, he made it dance.
