Chapter 86: Firsts Worth Fighting For
Archress Mageress's words startled everyone, but the tension faded almost immediately.
It was just a rogue, after all. What could a single rogue possibly do against a full party?
Ryan, however, felt a twinge of unease. He wasn't so quick to dismiss the threat.
He reached into his inventory and retrieved a Minor Cat's Eye Potion—a concoction that would heighten his detection senses for five minutes. After downing it, he activated his human racial ability, Suspicion, then urged his horse into a swift trot around the area. Between the potion and his ability, he was confident he could detect any rogue lurking within twenty yards.
The first circuit turned up nothing. No glimmer of movement, no flicker of a shadow. It was as if the rogue had simply vanished.
But Suspicion still had a few seconds left. Ryan decided to make one more loop, extending his search just a little further. That was when he spotted it—something out of place.
Beneath a waist-high boulder, the shadows seemed to flicker unnaturally. The towering trees overhead blocked much of the sun, deepening the natural gloom, yet within that darkness, Ryan caught a faint green glimmer. A familiar glow—the subtle shine of a green-quality item when equipped.
He spurred his steed forward. As he closed in, his detection abilities confirmed the presence of a blurred silhouette. Ryan grinned. He hurled Avenger's Shield, and it slammed squarely into the hidden rogue.
The Orc rogue stumbled into visibility, eyes wide with shock. He couldn't understand how the Paladin had spotted him, especially at such a distance while he was in Stealth.
Realizing he was outnumbered, the rogue immediately triggered Sprint, hoping to break away and slip back into the shadows. But he didn't get far. A weighted net dropped from above, wrapping around him and pinning him to the ground.
Panic flashed across the rogue's face. He checked his status.
—
Entangle: You are rooted in place and cannot move for 5 seconds.
—
The net had come from Ryan's Engineering toolkit—a low-level Net Launcher. It immobilized enemies for five seconds, though they could still fight back. The downside? It had a fifty-percent chance of ensnaring the user too. Ryan didn't care; five seconds was plenty of time, and he still had Reprimand ready if things went wrong.
The rogue stopped struggling. Surrounded and grounded, he gave up any hope of escape.
Moments later, the last Orc fell, and Ryan swung back into his saddle.
"Let's move! We've wiped out one group—others will be coming soon," he called to his party.
"Guild Leader," Moonlight Beauty said as she rode up beside him, curiosity in her voice, "what were all those gadgets you used? I've never seen anything like them!"
The rest of the team nodded. The grenades, the net launcher—none of it resembled standard abilities in the game.
"Engineering," Ryan said with a shrug. "I got the profession from a quest in the starting zone. Guess it's some kind of hidden path."
He didn't mind sharing. Engineering would become common knowledge eventually, and a little hint now wouldn't hurt. In his mind, everything strange he did could be credited to Glorious Achievements—he was the first to earn them, and it wasn't like some cosmic referee was going to rat him out.
The rest of the guild listened in awe, struggling to process the implications of Ryan's words.
Moonlight Beauty was the first to truly believe him. She had personally tasted the rewards of a Glorious Achievement before—those five Auxiliary Talent Points were unforgettable. Ever since, she had longed to claim another.
"Guild Leader… do you know how to earn Glorious Achievements?" she asked at last. She had a theory of her own but decided to hear it from Featherlight—the man who had claimed every Glorious Achievement so far.
"Yeah, Guild Leader, tell us!" several members chimed in, their voices eager. After hearing Moonlight Beauty's description of the rewards, they were practically squirming in anticipation.
Ryan urged his horse forward as they weaved around patrols of Orc-faction players. He spoke in party chat, occasionally sending his thoughts to the guild channel during brief moments of calm.
"Glorious Achievements," he said, "just the name tells you they're not ordinary. They're rewards for doing things no one else has done—truly firsts."
He gestured as he spoke in a calm and certain voice.
"I earned my first Glorious Achievement when I entered a dungeon for the very first time. The second came when I cleared Blood Hollow. Both were 'firsts.' That suggests if an action is something any player can do—and you do it first—you might earn a Glorious Achievement."
He paused for a moment, then continued.
"But when I became the first to change professions, I didn't get one. Even when I created the first guild, nothing happened. So I formed a theory."
The guild members leaned in, listening intently.
"The 'first' condition only counts if the opportunity is fair for everyone. Take profession changes: some players just need to kill a few monsters, others have to beat a dungeon boss. That's not an even playing field, so no Glorious Achievement.
And as for creating a guild… well, most players will never do it. So the game doesn't reward something only a handful of people can even attempt."
Understanding dawned on their faces. Ryan's explanation made sense.
"Another example," he added. "I earned a Glorious Achievement for being the first to kill an Orc player with the Guild Leader title. Any player can kill another; healer, mage, tank, whatever. As long as they participate, the chance is open to all."
Moonlight Beauty's expression turned serious as she considered this. "Then… Guild Leader… if someone becomes the first to reach a new military rank, would that earn a Glorious Achievement?"
The entire party stared at Ryan, their eyes practically shining.
"There are a dozen ranks or more," he said after a moment's thought. "No way the system will give a Glorious Achievement for every single one. My guess is one, maybe two—probably only the first to reach the highest rank will get one."
He gave a small, wry smile. "Look at us. We've killed a ton of enemy players already, and none of us have even hit the first military rank. That alone tells you how hard it will be to earn a Glorious Achievement that way."
Moonlight Beauty fell silent, but Ryan noticed the determined fire in her eyes.
The future War Goddess was ready to carve her name into history.
