Chapter 1318: Taking Responsibility
Some doctors couldn't take it anymore and said, "Stop talking nonsense. When we treated Du Zhongming before the New Year, he was already at extreme liver necrosis. The examinations during Little Miracle Doctor's treatment showed that his treatment was effective.
As Divine Doctor Ling said, Du Zhongming's current condition is definitely due to drinking during the New Year. There's no one to blame but himself for not controlling his consumption."
"That's nonsense. Du Zhongming didn't drink during the New Year at all. He didn't go to any place to drink. The treatment was at fault."
"That's right, the hospital should take responsibility for us."
"The doctor should be responsible, and He Lingxiu should be responsible!"
The group of people was being unreasonable; Du Zhongming's family came, including several distant relatives and aunts. None of them were reasonable at this moment.
At this point, the ICU door opened again, and a doctor rushed out urgently: "It's not good, the patient is critical."
This statement stirred up the crowd, causing Du Zhongming's family to rush towards Ling Zhenfei and others.
Shouting demands for compensation and accountability, they surged towards Ling Zhenfei and He Lingxiu.
The scene was chaotic. Ling Zhenfei, quick-witted, pulled He Lingxiu into his arms to prevent her from getting hurt in the initial onslaught.
The vice president, having sensed something wrong, had already called for security guards. However, with so many people frenzied, they couldn't be stopped.
A few doctors were knocked down and injured in the scuffle, but fortunately, Ling Zhenfei withdrew with He Lingxiu back into the ICU, avoiding a disaster.
Several doctors hid inside with them, including Vice President Guo Shan.
Guo Shan said, "Divine Doctor Ling, don't worry, the situation will be brought under control."
Ling Zhenfei said, "Does this kind of thing happen often at your hospital?"
Guo Shan sighed and said, "It's a long story. It's partly our fault. There was a similar incident before, where the medical disturbances went on for over ten days.
To avoid further impact, our hospital gave them some money, and somehow the word got out. Everyone knew those involved received money, so there were more disturbances afterward."
Ling Zhenfei said, "This is because they are being coddled. We kindly offered to help treat the disease. If cured, we're divine doctors, but if not, we're frauds. They're clearly at fault, yet they won't admit it."
Guo Shan said, "Exactly, it's tough for hospitals nowadays."
Ling Zhenfei looked at He Lingxiu. She seemed quite stunned, clearly not expecting such a situation.
Kind-hearted as she is, back in Qinghe Village, if people couldn't afford it, He Lingxiu often didn't charge them. But who would've thought such a thing would happen today.
Knowing she did her best, yet still being falsely accused.
Seeing He Lingxiu was not in a good state, Ling Zhenfei comforted her, saying, "Don't worry about it, this has nothing to do with you."
He Lingxiu said apologetically, "If I had known, I shouldn't have gone home for the New Year. I should have stayed to watch over Du Zhongming to prevent him from drinking."
Ling Zhenfei mocked with a cold laugh, "Are you a doctor or a nanny? Life and death are fate. If someone dies from drinking, even if you watched over him, you couldn't have stopped it."
Just then, it started to become quieter outside, as the police had arrived, bringing the situation under control.
Ling Zhenfei and the others also walked out of the ICU. Suddenly, a police officer entered and asked, "Who is He Lingxiu?"
Startled, He Lingxiu said, "I am."
The officer said, "Please come to the station to explain the situation, and also bring the person in charge of your hospital."
Ling Zhenfei knew this was probably the first time He Lingxiu had ever been to a police station.
"It's okay, don't worry. Let's just tell them everything. I'll go with you."
Seeing Ling Zhenfei, He Lingxiu gained some determination and boarded the police car with him. Vice President Guo Shan accompanied them as well.
Ling Zhenfei and He Lingxiu sat in the back of the police car, with a police officer seated beside them.
In the car, Ling Zhenfei asked He Lingxiu, "Isn't it baffling to do a good deed, only to be bitten back and have to explain at the police station?"
He Lingxiu nodded, "Isn't healing the sick and saving lives supposed to be respected? Why don't I feel any respect?"
Ling Zhenfei said, "That's the world for you. Don't harbor the intent to harm others but always stay vigilant against being harmed."
Clearly, He Lingxiu was very upset. Earlier, she cried in the ICU because she thought she couldn't save him, but now she was taken to the police station by the patient's family.
After explaining some things at the police station, Ling Zhenfei and He Lingxiu were called to another room, where a police officer attended to them.
The officer said, "Now, these people insist the prescription you wrote was problematic, leading to the patient's death, and they might sue you."
He Lingxiu couldn't believe her ears, shocked that such shamelessness existed in the world.
Ling Zhenfei's foundation provided them free treatment and didn't charge them, even called the best doctor, yet they ended up in such a pitiful state.
It was beyond imagination, and today's events reshaped He Lingxiu's worldview.
Only through situations like this can one grow, Ling Zhenfei knew, gaining more experience with these events.
Ling Zhenfei said, "Whose responsibility it is cannot be settled in a few words. If they think the prescription was problematic, then let's have a medical appraisal."
The officer said, "Mr. Ling, these things are complex. Now that the patient is dead, they basically just want some money. I could mediate to settle this, perhaps for a hundred or eighty thousand."
Ling Zhenfei shook his head, "Let's conduct a medical appraisal. If it's our fault, whether it's a billion or five thousand, I won't hesitate.
As doctors, with a heart for patients, we cannot let doctors lose heart. It's okay, we'll cover the cost of the appraisal."
The officer said, "Mr. Ling, think it over. You're a public figure. If this blows up, it's not in your best interest."
Ling Zhenfei replied, "We'll bear all consequences ourselves."
The officer nodded, "Alright, Mr. Ling, thank you for your cooperation."
Ling Zhenfei said, "Thank you for your efforts."
Ling Zhenfei and He Lingxiu walked out of the room, and Guo Shan followed quickly.
"Mr. Ling, how did it go?"
Ling Zhenfei smiled and said, "What else can we do? We might end up in court."
Guo Shan said, "Why don't we settle, give them some money, and call it off?"
