Chapter 118 : World Event (6)
Several players were already hit. Some managed to block a few arrows with their shields, but quite a number of them weren't as lucky.
The deadly arrows tore through their defenses with frightening precision. One by one, players fell to the ground, vanishing into light as the system registered their deaths.
In the distance, a figure stepped into view. It was a female undead ranger. Her skin was pale as ash, her eyes glowing with red light. She wore torn armor and carried a long black bow.
She smiled wickedly, whispering something under her breath as she notched four arrows at once onto the string of her bow.
Then she pulled back.
The sound of her bowstring tightening echoed across the ruins, and before the players could react, she released them.
The arrows shot forward like lightning, tearing through the air.
******
The silence after the first volley of arrows was short-lived. Within seconds, screams filled the air again as more players fell one after another.
The undead archer stood on top of a broken tower, her eyes deadly and gleaming in the darkness.
Her long black hair danced with the cold wind. Every movement she made was graceful but deadly, like a dancer of death.
She drew another arrow, pulled the bowstring to its limit, and released.
Thwack!
A player trying to cast a shield spell was hit through the chest. His body glowed faintly before turning into light and vanishing from the field.
"Where is she?!" someone shouted from below. "I can't see her!"
"She's too fast!" another yelled. "Spread out! Don't stay close together!"
"Find her or we are done for!"
They ran for cover behind fallen stones and half-collapsed walls, hoping to buy time to spot the undead archer. But she was already gone from her previous spot.
A shadow flickered across a nearby rooftop and an instant later, three more arrows cut through the air. Each arrow found its mark with perfect precision.
After the arrows struck, three more players vanished.
The archer smirked.
Her pale lips curved into a faint smile as she whispered in a chilling tone.
"Pathetic... mortals with borrowed strength."
Her bow glowed slightly darkened as if she was reinforcing it with some strange power. She then reached into her quiver, pulling out a special arrow.
This arrow was unique, standing out from the rest in her quiver. Its tip was dark purple with a faint mist oozing from it like it had just been taken out from a block of ice.
She nocked it and aimed toward a group hiding behind a large wall.
When she released it, the arrow didn't fly straight. It twisted in the air, breaking into five smaller arrows mid-flight — all homing in on their targets.
Boom!
A loud explosion shook the ground.
The shockwave sent dust and broken stones flying in all directions. When the smoke cleared, half of the group hiding there were gone.
The remaining players were trembling.
"She's insane!" one of them cried. "We need a healer!"
"We don't have time! She's coming!"
Their words froze when they saw her walking slowly through the fog. Her boots made no sound against the ground. Her eyes glowed like twin flames in the shadows.
Every step she took made the air feel colder.
They stared forward.
It was as though they were looking at death… and she was coming for them.
******
From a nearby rooftop, another player — a young man with silver armor and twin swords — jumped down to intercept her.
He moved fast, slashing horizontally. The blades left a trail of blue light.
The undead ranger twisted her body smoothly, dodging the strike by a hair's breadth, then swung her bow like a club, knocking him off balance.
He staggered back, trying to recover, when a tremendous force struck him. She had already kicked him in the chest, sending him crashing into a wall.
Before he could get up, another arrow pierced his throat.
"You thought you could stand before me?" she said coldly, her voice a bit dragged. "You are not even worth the time."
******
Just then, a powerful surge of heat filled the area.
The wind changed direction, and a bright red glow illuminated the ruins.
The archer turned her head slightly, her expression sharpening.
A woman stepped out from behind the burning wreck of a building.
She had short orange hair that flickered like flame and eyes glowing gold. Her armour was scorched at the edges, and fire danced along her hands.
The undead archer murmured, recognizing the power immediately. "Finally, something interesting."
The woman's name floated above her head.
[Player: Rina]
[Talent: Perfect Embers]
[Element: Fire]
[Rank: S-rank]
"Enough," Rina said, her voice firm. "You've killed enough of my party."
The archer tilted her head. "Then stop me."
Without another word, Rina raised her hand and summoned a ring of fire that surrounded her. The heat rippled through the air, melting the ground slightly beneath her feet.
"Flame Zone!"
The entire area within ten meters burst into flames. The undead archer leapt backward, landing lightly on a broken statue. The flames roared below her, licking at the stone.
"You think fire will save you?" the archer said softly, her red eyes narrowing.
Rina smiled faintly. "No. But it'll burn you down."
She clenched her fist, and a giant fireball formed above her palm. It spun faster and faster before she launched it.
Whoosh!
The ball of flame tore through the air like a comet. The explosion that followed made the ruins tremble.
When the smoke cleared, the archer was gone.
"Did I get her?" Rina muttered, scanning the area.
Suddenly, she felt movement behind her.
Swish!
An arrow flew straight toward her head. Rina barely had time to duck. The arrow grazed her cheek, slicing her skin before hitting the ground and exploding.
The archer appeared behind her, unharmed, her bow already ready for another shot.
"Too slow," she whispered.
Rina gritted her teeth and thrust her hand forward. "Then let's make it faster!"
Flames burst from her palms, swirling like a tornado of fire. The blast was so intense that the walls around them cracked from the heat of the explosion.
The archer crossed her arms, summoning a red shield made of bone in front of her. The fire clashed with the shield, exploding in a blinding wave of light.
When the light faded, the undead's cloak was partially burnt, and her left arm was smoking.
She stared at the burn mark for a second, then looked up slowly. Her lips curled into a cold, furious smile.
"You… actually hurt me."
She was surprised.
Her bow started glowing again — brighter this time, pulsing like a heartbeat. She raised it toward Rina, her killing intent spreading like wildfire.
"Now, I'll return the favor."
She drew five arrows at once, mist swirling around their tips. The ground trembled faintly as her power surged.
