Chapter 23: Ch 23: Recruitment
Adrian walked towards a desk which he assumed was the receptionist area. The man behind it looked at him approaching and asked in a polite tone, "Would you like to place an order, sir?"
Adrian replied with a slight shake of his head, "Ah no, no, I heard you are open to recruitment." Seeing the receptionist nod at his words, he continued,"Then I would like to apply for the post of the guard."
The receptionist hummed in response as he scrutinized him up and down. Then he replied back, "Please wait a moment. I need to consult the manager. Do sit here while I am at that." He pointed to a chair beside the desk.
Adrian thanked him and seated himself on the chair comfortably.
Glancing around, he saw few customers sitting at few tables and a waiter roaming among them, taking orders and serving them.
He himself didn't wait long as a backdoor opened, grabbing his attention.
From what seemed like a nicely decorated office room, a frail-looking man came out, followed by the receptionist.
The man was wearing a nice suit which he kept on adjusting as if he wasn't comfortable in it. His eyes darted everywhere, not in observation but rather resembling something close to panic.
'He is nervous.' Adrian concluded. The man even looked young and maybe even on his first job.
Finally, the manager spotted him. He looked behind him as if for confirmation, to which the receptionist calmly nodded.
The manager then strode towards Adrian and asked, "Are you the one applying for the guard's post?"
Adrian stood up from his seat before replying, "Yes sir, that would be me."
The manager seemed pleased by Adrian's gesture, probably considering it as an act of respect towards him.
He extended his hand and introduced himself.
"I am Jeffrey Colde. The junior manager of this store."
Adrian accepted it while replying back, " I am Leo, a former resident of Rimrock City."
Quickly he added with a nervous chuckle, "This is the first time I am applying for a job by the way."
Jeffrey seemed to get a bit relaxed at that. He then promptly asked, "So what is your level?"
"Lvl 36, sir" Adrian replied.
...and yeah, he was in another disguise. Same black tidied hair but with a scrawny body, with veins showing through them at places. His eyes had patches of black spots underneath them giving the pretense of long sleepless nights.
The manager thought for a moment and asked, "Then I suppose you could hold yourself in a combat?"
Though he said that, the look in his eyes he gave Adrian was almost judgemental. It seemed to say 'can you even fight?'
Adrian made a determined face and shouted, "Obviously, sir."
That drew glances from the other customers.
Jeffrey coughed a bit awkwardly against his fist, not having expected the sudden attention.
Then nodding at his enthusiasm, Jeffrey started walking away and asked him to follow him. The receptionist returned to his post.
They soon came to a halt in front of a small garden behind the restaurant. This area was surrounded by the high rise buildings of several major companies.
The manager then called over a hulk of a man who seemed to be guarding this place and the produces that grew in the garden.
Waving at him, Jeffrey said to Adrian, "Meet him. He is Ayu, the only guard working under us. Fight him, he has a higher level though. You don't need to defeat him or anything. All we need is a brief analysis of your skills."
Adrian looked at Ayu for a moment pretending to see the build of the man. He then nodded to Jeffrey.
Jeffrey moved to the side as Ayu rolled his shoulders, already ready for bullying a scrawny kid who looked as if the mere breeze can blow him away.
After few minutes, Adrian and Ayu faced each other, ready to fight.
"Don't worry kid I shall go easy on you." Ayu spoke as he bounced lightly but rapidly on his feet.
"That's so nice of you." Adrian smiled back.
Ayu leaped forward, setting his footwork as he tried intimidating Adrian. In response he stood still.
Ayu suddenly threw a punch at his face as Adrian moved a little backwards, the punch missing his face by several inches. Without giving Ayu a chance to recover, he rushed forward.
And just a few seconds later, Ayu was kneeling on the ground, clutching his knee and groaning heavily.
At the sidelines, Jeffrey had an impressed face. The typical amused face of someone for whom a fight was only an entertainment and didn't exactly understand the intricacies of it.
Adrian helped Ayu to his feet and looked towards Jeffrey. A small grin was plastered on his face as he enthusiastically waved.
"So Boss, do I get this job?"
Jeffrey muttered, "You are an expert, damn."
It was an easy win for Adrian....oh, did anyone thinks the results would have been otherwise different?

A/N: There are few points to be clarified. The first is the constitution of the body. In this fictional universe, each person has a physical body, a mental body and a soul body. One can consider each of them as realms and they are unique to each other.
While normal masses have all three realm fused as one in their physical body, the elites and the upper beings can separate all three of them. That doesn't mean there are three of them. Imagine three rooms attached to each other. Let them be the physical, soul and mental realms respectively. Now you can only remain in one room right? So just like that these higher beings can remain in only one of these realms at a time.
Now one might ask...how was Nyx in two realms at the same time? Well that's a secret for now that even Adrian doesn't know, so how can a humble author like that? Anyway just know that since she was dead in her mental realm, she was able to manifest in her physical form. And yeah ro kill one higher being, you need to kill them three times in all of the three realms.
Hopw this clarifies it. Please comment in this paragraph if you still have any doubts.
The second thing...are you liking this novel?
