Chapter 57: Making Contact
"I don't really understand those things in the Supernatural Realm," facing Li Lin and the two others, who wore puzzled expressions, Yu Sheng said candidly, "Especially the Exotic Realm and entities and such, in fact, I'm also not very familiar with things outside of Boundary City—so I've been looking for professionals like you, hoping you can answer many of my questions."
Li Lin and Xu Jiali exchanged surprised looks upon hearing Yu Sheng's words, while Little Red Riding Hood couldn't help but scrutinize Yu Sheng a few more times: "You… mean to say you've never had contact with the Exotic Realm and entities before?! You just started dealing with these matters recently?!"
"I've lived a peaceful and ordinary life for the past twenty-some years," Yu Sheng stretched out his hands, speaking truthfully, "It's only recently that I've started encountering all this messy stuff, I'm completely a beginner in this regard."
No sooner had he finished speaking than Xu Jiali's expression began to stiffen—only recently began dealing with the Exotic Realm, and yet able to beat down a Hunger Entity with a Danger Level over three, and casually opening a door to a desolate planet millions of light-years away, moving in and out of the Exotic Realm as if it were his own home... What kind of "beginner" is this?
Is this even human?!
He exchanged looks with Li Lin beside him, their minds racing, having considered countless things in a flash.
For one thing, they were almost certain that the spacetime distortion phenomenon that had the entire Special Service Bureau in turmoil was definitely related to this man called "Yu Sheng," the evidence lying in the door he opened with ease.
Yes, with ease.
And secondly, they must not be fooled by the word "beginner" that Yu Sheng called himself, no matter whether he's really just started getting in touch with the matters related to the Exotic Realm and entities, the power he wields does not seem like that of an ordinary person who has just started being influenced by the Exotic Realm.
Either the word "beginary" is a lie or the identity of "ordinary person" is a lie—or perhaps both are lies.
Moreover, an ordinary person wouldn't possibly live in such an obviously unusual house.
"I want to confirm something first," Li Lin hesitated, then asked, "You've always lived here?"
"Yeah," Yu Sheng nodded. He didn't plan to mention to strangers that he had come here from another "Boundary City," so he simply admitted that he had always lived in this house. After all, he even had an ID card, "I've always lived here."
Li Lin: "Then do you know that this house…"
"I know, it's an Exotic Realm," Yu Sheng interrupted before the other could finish speaking, looking sincere and innocent, "Only found out recently, lived here before without any problems."
Li Lin was once again at a loss for words.
What does he mean found out only recently! What's with living here before without any problems! Can ordinary people really be like this?
Speaking of which, after so many years, how could the Special Service Bureau have never discovered such an out-of-place area in the old city district?!
"So, could I take a look at your identification?" Li Lin held back for a long time, cautiously asking, then quickly rummaged through his pocket and took out a black booklet, unfolding it in front of Yu Sheng, "This is my service badge."
Yu Sheng glanced at the small booklet the other party took out, seeing Li Lin's photo, name, and job information printed on it, as well as indecipherable codes and identification numbers—since he couldn't understand it anyway, and he had never seen other Special Service Bureau IDs, but at least this had the air of "official business."
So, he very readily took out and handed over his own ID card.
Li Lin received the ID, and he and Xu Jiali quickly scanned the information on it.
Both of their gazes stayed on the "Address" part of the ID, their faces frozen as they looked at the white background with the black characters "No. 66 Wutong Road."
"Is there a problem?" Yu Sheng asked curiously as the two of them stared blankly.
Li Lin snapped out of it and slowly handed back Yu Sheng's ID, appearing hesitant, and after struggling for a few moments, he finally said, "Did you know, Wutong Road doesn't have a No. 66."
Yu Sheng: "...?"
Now he knew why none of the locksmiths he had found before could ever arrive smoothly.
"We need to go back to the bureau first," Xu Jiali broke the silence, "Your situation here is quite special. We need to report it to the higher-ups, and then check with the archives department to figure out what's going on."
Yu Sheng was taken aback: "Leaving just like this? But I have a ton of questions..."
"We will leave our contact information, and we will formally 'get in touch' with you in the near future," Xu Jiali said, "The Special Service Bureau has a set of official procedures for first contact and registration with humans who 'change' after recent encounters with the Exotic Realm. Rest assured, all your questions will be answered during the formal contacts later."
As she spoke, she took a business card from her pocket and handed it to Yu Sheng: "My phone number is on it."
"…Alright." Yu Sheng thought for a moment. His main goal was actually to connect with the professionals in Boundary Land who specialized in resolving Exotic Realm issues, and as for his myriad of questions, clearly they could not be sorted out by just chatting with the two, all that needed to be handled and understood slowly in the future, so he nodded willingly and took the business card.
After that, he left his cell phone number.
This number he had since "arriving" here, but hardly anyone contacted him, and he didn't have anyone to contact either.
Then, Yu Sheng turned his attention to "Little Red Riding Hood" who had been standing by quietly without speaking.
The girl, who looked like a high school student, now had a troubled complexion. Her exposed right arm seemed to be recovering, but many tiny black lines were still visible on her skin, giving off a rather eerie appearance.
"Are you okay?" Yu Sheng asked with concern.
"It's just a side effect from dealing with wolves, not the first time. I'll adjust and recover," Little Red Riding Hood shook her head, "I need to see the doctor later. Oh, I'll leave my number too... wait, I didn't bring my cell phone, let me find a pen."
While talking, she reached into the small bag on her waist, but suddenly, her movements froze in place.
The expression on the young girl's face visibly stiffened, as if she only then realized something dreadful.
Yu Sheng was startled by her reaction: "What's wrong?"
Xu Jiali sighed: "Her homework was torn up by the entity."
Little Red Riding Hood stiffly turned her neck, seeing sympathetic expressions on the faces of Xu Jiali and Li Lin.
"We both saw it from the beginning, but you didn't notice at the time," Li Lin whispered, "We didn't want to bring it up, hoping to keep you happy for a bit longer..."
"When have you ever seen me happy! Ah!? When I was being chased through the woods by a monster like a dog?" The girl in red completely lost her cool, all the calm and maturity she had maintained on the way evaporated, leaving her in an outburst, "I spent three days! I spent three days redoing the math worksheets ah!"
Yu Sheng stood by, looking dumbfounded. He began to realize that the daily lives and mental states of these "professionals" were not quite what he had imagined, but he didn't know how to interject under the circumstances—especially as the girl before him indeed looked quite heartbroken...
But nonetheless, Little Red Riding Hood ended up giving him her cell phone number—when the girl wrote down the numbers, she pressed so hard with every stroke as if she was channeling her hatred, practically carving the digits into the bodies of those already vanished "Hunger Entities," which made Yu Sheng shudder with fear.
Soon after, Li Lin and the others were ready to say their goodbyes.
Yu Sheng escorted them to the doorstep, opened the door, and stood by the frame: "Then I won't see you out— I've still got a pile of things to handle here."
Hearing this, Li Lin turned back for a glance at the living room, where he saw the fox girl with a myriad of tails still guarding a pile of food on the floor, and the small doll with its arms broken off sitting on the sofa, heartlessly watching TV.
An odd No. 66 Wutong Road, inhabited by a peculiar "Yu Sheng" and his two equally bizarre "friends".
Right under the nose of the Special Service Bureau.
Li Lin knew that he had stumbled upon a massive whirlpool, and all this would appear in both his and Xu Jiali's report...
And reflected in the overtime work to come.
The young Special Service Bureau Officer sighed deeply, wearied, he walked through the doorway.
The cool night breeze greeted him head-on, and the silent night colors of the old district met his eyes, as the warm streetlights illuminated the path ahead.
He and Xu Jiali instinctively looked back, only to see a bare wall behind them, with chaotic and abstract graffiti on it.
Xu Jiali stepped forward, touching the wall and knocking on it a couple of times.
"... It doesn't seem to be here," the experienced deep diver spoke softly, "This is merely an entrance, and it only opens upon invitation."
"Should we head back to the bureau first?" Li Lin suggested, "Or do we keep someone here to continue watching?"
Xu Jiali looked up at Little Red Riding Hood.
The girl instantly turned her head away, showing with her gesture that she was in no mood for overtime due to her torn-up homework.
"I need to go see Doctor Lin for treating the side effects," she still gave a proper reason, "Do whatever you two see fit. I don't think it matters whether someone stays here or not—his powers are too strange, our current methods are insufficient for monitoring."
"Let's head back to the bureau first," Xu Jiali sighed, taking the lead to move forward, "Besides, there are others watching the perimeter. We'll report today's events first. This concerns the Dark Angel... I'm afraid even Captain Song can't make the call on this."
