Did That Doctor Successfully Remarry Today?

Chapter 5: Chapter 4 Glowing in the Pouring Rain

Two people were conversing when a beautiful woman wearing high heels walked in, holding a pure black umbrella. Seeing Gao Chuan seated in the corner, she walked straight towards him, her high heels making a "clack clack" sound on the floor.

"Hello, you are Dr. Gao Chuan, right?" The woman approached the table and directly ignored Jiang An standing aside, asking straightforwardly.

"Yes, Bai Yiting?" Gao Chuan stood up, his gaze falling upon the woman before him, dressed in a sapphire blue business suit, her face covered with thick makeup, her entire figure supported by a pair of seven or eight centimeter high heels. While she looked spirited, she could not fully hide the fatigue on her face.

"Hello, I'm sorry for making you wait, there was a last-minute issue at the company that I couldn't get away from." Bai Yiting took her seat proactively, picked up the menu from the table and started looking at it, stealing glances at the man in front of her.

His looks and physique are passable, but his career—not so much. A regular department doctor, likely doesn't earn nearly as much as what she spends in a month.

Jiang An saw a woman suddenly come in and, after a moment of surprise, quickly composed herself and bent down to patiently ask the woman what she wanted to order.

The two had never met before, but Bai Yiting had heard a bit about Gao Chuan. The youngest son of the Gao Family abandoned the family business worth billions to study medicine. Normally, the one representing the Gao Family in public was the eldest son, Gao Yu, and the younger son was almost forgotten due to his perennial studies. But after all, he was a member of the Gao Family, and face must be given.

"Dr. Gao must be a very romantic man," Bai Yiting said as she watched the man in front of her gaze transfixed at the curtain of rain climbing the clear glass window.

"It's okay." Gao Chuan returned to his senses, facing the woman's haughty demeanor and really could not muster up the interest to find a topic for conversation.

For him, blind dates represented the unknown, unlike his surgeries. Often, a successful operation required him to spend a lot of time getting to know the patient's physical condition in advance, understanding every step thoroughly.

He never did anything he was not sure of.

Like now, he was certain Bai Yiting would not like him.

"As for me, I manage hundreds of people at my job, so I might not have much time for dating. When I'm not working, I just drink with friends. What does Dr. Gao usually do?"

Gao Chuan took a light sip of the coffee in his hand, replying in a calm tone, "Perform surgeries."

A simple three words, and the temperature between them plummeted.

"And when you're not working?" Bai Yiting asked awkwardly.

The rain on the street continued to ding and dong against the glass, thin lines of rain falling vertically, splashing up white spray.

Gao Chuan's gaze had at some point shifted to Jiang An who was standing at the café's front desk talking and laughing with the cashier. The young girl was jovially saying something, her pair of pitch-black and clear eyes endearing, like the sunshine filtering through the rain.

"Dr. Gao? Dr. Gao?" Bai Yiting called out a few times, seeing Gao Chuan did not respond.

"Oh, what did you say?"

Bai Yiting, already cursing in her heart at his distracted demeanor, still asked politely, "I'm curious, what does Dr. Gao do when you're not working?"

"Doing research."

Bai Yiting: "..."

Perhaps because the atmosphere of embarrassment was too oppressive, Bai Yiting did not initiate any more conversation and soon found an excuse to leave the coffee shop.

The weather remained gloomy, a gray mist shrouding the entire city, with raindrops interconnecting like large nets, showing no sign of abating all afternoon.

Jiang An picked up a broom to start sweeping the floor, her gaze unconsciously drifting towards the corner. The woman had left at some point, leaving Gao Chuan alone in the corner looking at his phone.

The man was intently staring at the screen of his phone, clothed in a meticulously tailored dark suit, his handsome, sculpted face featured prominent and exquisite features. Sitting alone in a quiet corner, he resembled a portrait of fine art.

Time quietly passed, and before they knew it, evening had arrived; the sky grew dimmer as the cafe emptied of patrons.

As closing time approached, Jiang An gazed at the persistent rain outside with a troubled expression. She still needed to go to the hospital to take care of her mother later, and the question of how to get there weighed on her mind.

"Anan, can you make it on your own?" the concerned Boss Lady of the cafe inquired.

"It's fine, I have a raincoat." Jiang An changed her clothes, donned her raincoat, and had just stepped out of the cafe door to ride her electric scooter parked under the eaves when a voice suddenly sounded from behind her.

"Need a ride?"

Jiang An whirled around in the rain, only to see a tall man holding a transparent umbrella, who had gradually approached her side.

The rain fell to his feet along the edge of the umbrella, as her gaze followed the sound and slowly moved upward.

Amidst the showering raindrops, he seemed to glow.

The rain continued to patter relentlessly, trickling down the brim of her hat and streaming past Jiang An's face as if a curtain of rain was drawn right before her eyes.

It might have been the noise of the rain, but it took Jiang An a moment to register Gao Chuan's words. The slender girl braced herself against her little electric bike and declined gracefully, "No need, Dr. Gao, I'll ride there myself."

Gao Chuan stared at Jiang An, whose face was now covered with raindrops. She was exceptionally simple and unadorned, yet still delicate in appearance, which somehow reminded him of his own student days.

"Then you can give me a ride instead." Gao Chuan said as he stepped forward, extending the umbrella over both their heads and unconsciously shortening the distance between them.

Jiang An: "?"

It dawned on Jiang An that Gao Chuan did not mean to drive her to the hospital; rather, if she did not extend her help, Dr. Gao might be stranded in the cafe, and possibly docked pay for being late to his night shift.

In the end, Jiang An voluntarily handed over her dark green raincoat to driver Dr. Gao, who donned it without it looking out of place on his tall figure. Little Jiang An took Dr. Gao's transparent umbrella and seated herself at the back, finally putting on the helmet—mission accomplished.

Gao Chuan started the electric scooter, "Are you seated well?"

Jiang An adjusted the angle of the umbrella and was suddenly prompted by Gao Chuan's question. His voice, magnetic and reminiscent of her father during childhood, who would ride his bicycle taking her to buy ice pops.

"Yes." Jiang An purposefully held the umbrella high above her head, and Gao Chuan felt the cover above him, then promptly drove off.

The street was not deeply flooded, but rainwater still managed to splash. Jiang An intended to lift her feet higher to avoid soaking her shoes but before she could react, a delivery truck turned the corner and headed straight towards them as if the driver hadn't noticed the two at all.

Water splashed up in an instant, reaching a significant height and perfectly aimed at the duo in the corner. Murky rainwater poured over them, as if they had been caught in a bath.

Jiang An couldn't help but scream, the splash hitting her face and completely soaking her.

Gao Chuan turned his head at the sound, and as their eyes met, noticing each other's disheveled condition, they couldn't help but chuckle.

Jiang An was the first to burst into laughter, her candid laughter ringing in Gao Chuan's ears, clear as a bell.

Gao Chuan swiftly faced forward, listening to Jiang An's laughter, and found himself unable to resist smiling.

There they were, like two children, laughing in the rain.
