Chapter 12: Chapter 11 He Needs Her Repayment
You are the wind. I am the fire. You provoke me. And you entangle me. — "Gently, Violently"
The crowd was bustling around, and Gao Chuan wove through the sea of people to the sofa where the argument had just taken place and saw Jiang An squatting on the ground picking up glass fragments in silence. The girl was wearing a black strap dress, her fair skin coupled with her slender figure, not without a touch of worldliness.
Seeing Jiang An like this, the fury that had been building up in Gao Chuan's heart instantly erupted, with him in that moment resembling a volcano.
"What's with the innocent act? Aren't you just a drink server? What's it to you if I touch you?" The man who had smashed the bottle earlier was cursing at Jiang An, who was still crouched on the ground, frantically trying to dodge the man's rough movements and to quickly stand up only to realize that many onlookers had already gathered around.
She was drowned out by the sighs of the crowd, her head pounding with pain.
Not until a tall figure stood behind her did she get forcefully pulled behind someone. While she was still puzzled, what came into view was a familiar back, a head she could only see by looking up.
"Gathering a crowd to make trouble can get you detained; I'll compensate for all the alcohol you drank today." Gao Chuan stood in front of Jiang An, his protective action simultaneously fierce, which jerked her painfully behind him.
Jiang An obediently hid behind Gao Chuan, lowering her head. Her uneasy gaze fell on the hand they were still holding. She subconsciously wanted to let go but found that Gao Chuan, who was still defending her, did not seem to have any intention of letting go.
In the darkness, the tightly clasped hands sparked an indescribable feeling.
After dealing with the unreasonable customer, Gao Chuan turned around and, without a word, dragged Jiang An towards the bar entrance. Jiang An seemed to perceive the man's anger and tried to pull away from his arm, "Dr. Gao, Dr. Gao, where are you taking me? I still have to work."
Gao Chuan listened to the faint sound coming from behind him, the girl's voice full of grievance, tender and irritating to the heart.
"Jiang An, don't forget what your mother told you, don't forget you're a student," Gao Chuan found a quieter place to stop and finally released Jiang An's arm, which was almost turning red, without waiting for her to explain before launching into a lecture.
Jiang An moved her wrists, understanding the reason for Gao Chuan's anger, and smiled lightly, "Dr. Gao, you've misunderstood. I'm just filling in for a classmate for a bit. I'll leave at ten o'clock as soon as my classmate has something to deal with..."
At this moment, Gao Chuan, who was now furious and embarrassed, could no longer bear to listen to her explanations. He only knew the facts that had unfolded before him as he saw her dressed provocatively working as a waitress here, almost being bullied, and the moment he saw Jiang An surrounded by a group of people, he charged over like an enraged lion.
"Where is your boyfriend? He allows you to come to places like this?" Gao Chuan dismissed the girl's explanation and directly questioned her.
Jiang An, who had been tense before, suddenly showed a smile, "Boyfriend? I don't have a boyfriend!"
"You must be talking about Brother Wei Yan mentioned by Dr. Gao. He's just an old student of my mom's, Dr. Gao, you really shouldn't misunderstand, I'm really just covering a shift temporarily. Besides, my classmate said this bar isn't that chaotic. It just so happened that I ran into a drunk guest, I know how to take care of myself."
Before she finished speaking, it seemed like the anger in Gao Chuan's eyes had vanished by half. Remembering how agitated he had been just now, he regretted it and sighed. Then, looking down again at Jiang An's exposed skin, he turned his head away and said, "You have two minutes to tell the manager you're off work. I'll wait for you here." As he said this, his hand unintentionally lifted and touched the top of Jiang An's head, pausing momentarily, then awkwardly caressed it a few times.
Jiang An instinctively closed her eyes, returning the gesture—a touch as real as it was atop her head, gentle as if in a dream.
Gao Chuan walked back to his booth to pick up his black coat and car keys, and upon seeing Song Li looking at him with a gossipy expression, he dropped a line: "Take care of what just happened," then strode away.
Song Li pursed his lips discontentedly, thinking to himself that he still has to clean up after Gao Chuan's womanizing. However, he truly hadn't expected the usually aloof Gao Chuan to impulsively rescue a server in the bar; could she be the woman who had troubled him earlier?
Jiang An explained the situation to the duty manager, changed back into her own clothes, and hurried out to find Gao Chuan. The girl's rushing footsteps were swift, and when she was out of breath seeing the man still standing in the same corner, she slowly adjusted her breathing. The dim lights of the bar corridor engulfed the man entirely; from a distance, she watched the tall figure leaning against the wall in the darkness. It inexplicably brought back memories of a night to be nostalgic about, when she, just like now, was running down the street and saw Gao Chuan at the corner, having subdued a thief, the tall man shielding her behind his back.
Gao Chuan noticed Jiang An approaching, stood up straight, draped the coat over Jiang An, "Put this on, it's cold outside," and looked down at the girl who had changed her clothes, inexplicably feeling relieved.
"Thank you, Dr. Gao," Jiang An said, turning her head away in embarrassment, and they both walked out of the bar together.
The moonlight was hazy, where black met white.
"Do you know how to drive?" It was only when they reached the parking garage did Gao Chuan remember he had been drinking and swung the car keys in front of Jiang An.
Jiang An had just gotten her driver's license over the summer vacation; she tentatively took the driver's seat. Gao Chuan set the navigation to his home and fell into a deep sleep as soon as he got in the car, "Sorry to trouble you, drive me home."
Feeling the man's subtle breaths beside her, Jiang An kept her body stiff as she followed the navigation's prompts, steering the car; the gentle night breeze blew through the window, brushing over the man's slightly drunken face, seemingly flushed red, perhaps due to the alcohol.
"Dr. Gao, Dr. Gao, Dr. Gao?" As Gao Chuan was awakened by the soft calling, he slowly opened his eyes to see a pair of peach blossom eyes before him; Jiang An was trying to unbuckle his seat belt, her body leaning towards his chest, and her disheveled hair softly brushing against his cheek.
Realizing that Gao Chuan had woken up, Jiang An quickly retracted her body, regaining her tense posture and quietly said, "Dr. Gao, we've arrived."
Gao Chuan rubbed his brow and turned his head, only then noticing that they had arrived at the bottom of his apartment building, "Jiang An…"
"Dr. Gao, I truly thank you. I know you helped me today because you were worried about me. I'm very grateful for everything you've done for me. I might not have much to offer right now, but if Dr. Gao ever needs help in the future, just let me know. I will do my utmost to help," Jiang An said with both hands on the steering wheel, her eyes still not daring to meet the person in the passenger seat, as if she gathered great courage to say these words, her entire little face turning entirely red, although she had not touched a drop of alcohol that day.
Listening to the girl's earnest words, Gao Chuan suddenly had the mistaken impression that he had been given a 'thank you' token.
"Thank you, Dr. Gao, I will certainly repay you well."
Gao Chuan, who was only mildly tipsy, went home and lay on his bed, staring at the Spanish-style crystal chandelier above, and suddenly bent the corners of his mouth, finding humor in the girl's stuttering earlier.
Repay? How does she intend to repay?
He seems to need her repayment.
